Love this video. The opening and closing moments - framing the core, with such grace in the communication and teaching.

Isn't he about 65 years old now? I've never seen such mastery (In striking) from someone that old before. His strikes sound like cannon fire.

I remember back when I lived in Hawaii back in the late 80s, I was visiting a Goju Ryu class at an Okinawan temple near university of Manoa. I was watching the head instructor sparring with one of his black belt students. The student was sharp and crisp, a man in his early 30s. The instructor sparring with the student moved like a man in his late 30s early 40s, with incredible athletic skill and finesse. I later learned to my utter surprise and disbelief that that instructor was 65 yrs old. To watch an advanced black belt at 65 yrs old move just like Sensei Hotton was not only amazing but transforming as well.

it is very difficult for a 65 y/o to have high kicks that good looking. usually their hip joint is compromised by then. I'm in my 40's, my kicks are powerful, with good form, but my high kicks are no where near Sensei Hotton's..

In someone that "experienced". His kicks transcend, and incorporating zen with martial arts or anything else is important. Meditation is underappreciated or undervalued in practice, and it is more important than most factors in the discipline. He stated function first dictates more than the form. This is another way of finding purpose over literal action. In meditation, the understanding is that language is limited and can only convey what is meant, but it cannot convey the right message without the decoder intercepting the feeling. The reason he talks so much is because it can be frustrating explaining what one knows to someone else who does not because words cannot truly capture the experience. The experience must be felt; Intellectualizing the process is the 1st step. And a person either gets it or they do not; Otherwise they have to continue practicing until it just clicks one day and a person will know it when they get it. I found it amusing that there were young kids. This is more like a master class.

Shotokan or not, I saw there some clearly “aikidoesk” techniques, not to mention the “whip explanation”… But great synergy, and very motivational. 🙇

SKA BB here.. what org does rick train with?? It is said that the heart of karate went to America with Oshima by Master Egami...but I am very impressed with Rick's technique. Clearly works. Who did he train with and who does he train with now??
