I found it easier on a 2001 4.6l to de-pin the connector and put a new one on. Just have to make sure to get the MotorCraft WPT986. Wells Vehicle Electronics WVE 1P1483 seemed to be a cheaper alternative but I cannot confirm the fitment. Not an issue for me but I also noticed the OEM uses two different gauge wires and the aftermarkets didn't.

Do the wires have to be certainly inserted?
No, just crimp and heat shrink does the trick
