Roland I love that you are a fisherman and not just a bass fisherman. You get just as excited about a 1/2 pound bluegill as you do about a 7 pound bass. Thank you for sharing your passion with us!
You are the best at teaching. That looks like a blast. When i was a kid we had a weekend get away on lake Istokpoga. We have photos from the 70's of stringers full of Bluegill and Shellcrackers we would catch when they were on the beds. We always used live worms though. Thanks for bringing us along Roland!
I had a tear and drool falling EVERY time you threw a brim back... I never in my life will throw a keeper brim or crappie back, 😂that’s gonna go on a fresh fried fish sammich for supper🤤 makes my saliva glands over salivate lmao
Roland was explaining why he’s in a tracker and not a $100,000 boat. Here is how I explain it “because I freakin want to, the fish don’t give a crap what I fish out of.” I have a camo center console and I love the damn thing.
Martin, in today's fishing climate it seems the little feisty ones get forgotten about. Not by me, I ❤ catching those little guys! There's a city in Alabama named Centre, AL. They bill themselves as "The CRAPPIE Capital of the World." They, too, have some huge CRAPPIE in their lake, big momma bass too! The town of Centre is located on Lake Weiss. I think you would have a ball fishing there! May be a future video! The town's age and demographics are perfect for your older and younger fans too. Nope, I don't live there,😅, but it is close to the Georgia state line. I used to go there for landscape and wild bird photo shoots. AWESOME sunsets on that lake, rivals some of those Florida coastal sunsets 👍.
Blue gill never disappoint! Fun to catch and they don't really get picky like bass do. Always love catching those little guys....and they are very good to eat!😋
Great video! I love this great Bluegill fishing action. We love you Roland for all of the excellent fishing instruction you give, and have gave throughout all these years..... Thank you Roland Martin!
You know you're listening to a true fisherman when a man who could easily catch some giant bass on that lake can take time to catch and release bluegills and have a blast doing it. God bless you Roland! Luv your stuff!
Great video Mr Martin. Love to catch bluegill. My go to bait for bluegill growing up was real dragonflies. Neither bass nor bluegill would leave them alone. I got up to a 5.5 pounder bass on that pattern.
White curly tail grub on that beetlespin will change your life in my opinion. I have a 77 year old uncle who throws only that on two different spinning reels. He catches so many fish no matter where we go it is incredible.
Another absolutely beautiful video! Excellent tip, braided line, fluorcarbon leaders, beetle spins with yamamoto grubs with the best teacher in the world. As always hats off to Bass Tracker boats and especially Johnny Morris you friend and sponsor! Beautiful job Roland!
Man I Remember when I was a Teenager Ditching from School and Roland and all you old schools Were Slaying Bass And you are still doing what you love. Awesome stuff Roland 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
I'm not sure about as much fun as BUT I do agree that catching bluegill using ultralight tackle is a BLAST And I still get out and do it often. I have 2 ultralight rods setup just for that!!!!
Thanks very much for the Bluegill video!!! We always use redworms to catch them but now I think i'd like to try some artificials out. Those are some of the prettiest fish down there and a great fight on light tackle! Also your Tracker is one Beautiful boat !!! Set That Hook!!!!!
Ooooh Son! Thats a 4 pound bluegill! Ooooh Son! That's a 5 pound bluegill! Ooooh Son! Thats a 6 pound bluegill! I thoroughly loved watching Roland Martin back in the 80s on TBS. You had him and Orlando Wilson on Saturdays and they were so much fun to watch. BUT. Roland had a teeny tiny habit of slightly exaggerating the size of his bass fishing catch.
Great video Roland! I always enjoy catching those Bluegills on Okachoobee when we come down there every year to fish the Everglades and stay at yalls place!
A fly rod with poppin' bugs is also a good way to catch bluegill. Every now and then a pound or so bass will hit it and wake you right up. That's really fun.
You're really talking me into braided line. Might have to break down and get some. Much more comfortable using leads now that I know about the double uni.
Roland, great video, I think the Bluegill is the prettiest fish in freshwater, and in SC and Eastern NC fishing is good in the black water and they call a big one a bull, I think that is cool as in saltwater the prettiest fish, in my opinion, is a dolphin and in NC SC they call it blue water fishing, I recently caught a big Copernose in a small SC lake using a black spinnerbait from Walmart, and I love to fish for them on Falls Reservoir near Badin NC. I have many times thought with all the tournaments it would be cool to see more Bream tournaments. In closing a big dolphin caught is also called a bull.
Roland I'm a man your age whose gonna criticize the greatest tournament fisherman of all time . What you've called a "slow" retrieve is a moderate retrieve to me. I think if you could slow it down just a little bit you'd see more fish on your bait. I've been your fan for many decades now! It's your buoyant spirit that makes you such a wonderful ambassador for the love of fishing ! Please take good care of your health & fittness . This world is a better place with you in it !
When it's too hot and rainy to catch bass. The bass bite has been slow lately with all the rain this week. In central FL. About 1 hour north of Disney. This time of year, if you have never tried it, may I suggest night fishing for bass with plastic worms. I have had much success at night. JS Hope this helps someone realise that you don't have to sit in the hot sun to catch good bass. Been fishing 35+ yrs and just discovered this in the early 2000's.
Not going to lie I caught a few big ones never understood why I kept saying ooo I gotta big one ooo I gotta big bass I realized I had roland /Sinko and 16 bass in the span of 7 hours Virus. Thanks for the tips Mr Roland
Nice fishin, in most cases I don't think you really need a leader of clear line, tied to your braid. I find the fish don't seem to care, and bite on straight braid, I use straight braid.
Mr. Roland sir...... forget the bluegills and the bass, you need to do a video right here on how you stay in shape and have great flexibility. Especially your knees. I’m serious! I saw your video on making your canoe untipable. Installing 8 rubber fender floats. And you fell out and CLIMBED BACK IN ! And then you said “ Hey I’m 80 years old!!” You even sat cross legged at the start of the video! Everyone I know 60 and above is complaining about stif and painful joints. What do you eat that’s different, Roland? Do you drink coffee or eat acidic foods like tomatoes? Do you eat red meat, or mostly fish and vegetables? Do you eat foods with a lot of sugar? You look 65, not no 80. And you move like a 35 year old in and around your bass boat. Do you go in to the pool a couple times a week and use weights to improve your range of motion? Man, you’re like Jack Lalang ! I thank you in advance for your reply from all of us on the other side of the camera. Nice to see you here on UA-cam. Started watching you in 1978. 54 y o now. Keep up the good work!
John Doe I agree. Especially for a guy whose been out in the sun for most of his life, I swear he hasn’t aged since I started watching him as a kid 20 years ago.
It’s hard to beat bream on the bed for plain old fun. I prefer live bait, I like to watch that float dance and go under. Also good grief watching this guy makes me feel like a kid again. I remember watching him on TV at my grandparents’ house back in the mid 80s.
It sure looked like you were working that reel quickly, even when you said you'd slowed it down. That bail was spinning pretty quick. I'd love to catch that many big bluegill. Next time take your fly rod with you, that would have been perfect. Nice video, well done
As much fun as this is, I think it would be great of RM could expand on the conservation aspects of maintaining a thriving population. Maybe have a guest or a DNR guy and explain any limits or time slots for bag limits and how to be responsible. We need to be good stewards for these fisheries. For instance, can you distinguish between female and male fish? (aside from the obvious bulge of eggs). Does culling males only affect the population or reproductive rates? What is the sustainable catch rate? In the late 80s, early 90s, I fished a Florida lake with some relatives, using fly rods and small beetle spins, and we'd catch copious quantities of big 'gills and shellcrackers off their beds. We kept a lot of them, too, and spent a week feasting on bluegills, feeding 6 people night after night. A few years later, and that fishery was gone. These days, I like to return all fish that are bulging with eggs, no matter what species, and try to avoid the beds when they're actively making babies. In Wisconsin, we've seen a decline in "white bass" (a smaller-sized striped bass variation) due to over-harvest during the spawn, and these fisheries are just SO fantastic, that it would be a shame to lose them. A one pound bloogie on a fly-rod is a treat that is second to none, that will tow your kayak!
Man, this video was made in June? I need a Dolorian from back to the future to go catch the Bluegill on that full moon,, HAHA,,,Bill Dance uses a Bobber with a split-shot

Love Bluegill ! My brother and I have cancelled our regular fishing, if we accidentally hit the blue gill jackpot. More than once. Always a fan!
Love the youtube channel Roland! I grew up watching you fish, now my boys are doing the same. Thank you sir, it's truly a blessing

What I like is not one damn jet ski in sight! Our lakes where I live seem to just be a bunch of morons on the water who don't even actually fish.
I do love that boat 👍
Catching a big bluegill is just as fun as catching anything else.
