- Arvind Gupta talks about TOTTOCHAN - an iconic Japanese book on Education. No book on education has sold more copies than Tottochan. In Japan with a population of 160 million the book has sold 8 million copies. Every 20th Japanese has not just read but bought a copy of Tottochan.
The story is about a school TOMOE run by a visionary principal Kobayashi. The school was made of 9 disused railway wagons. One was the Principal’s office, second the library, third the Science Lab and the other coaches were classrooms. Tottochan has been read aloud to 3 year olds and 103 olds have thoroughly enjoyed it.
The National Book Trust (NBT India) published Tottochan in 11 Indian languages in 1990s. The Marathi edition of the book is in the 27th edition. The book has acquired a cult status. The Maharashtra Text Book Corporation (Balbharti) has a chapter from Tottochan in its sixth standard English Text Book.
The world is divided into 2 camps - people who have read Tottochan and people who haven’t. The book can be easily found online.
