Hi Abbie . My wife and I have had Paramo smocks since 2007. She has the Velez (detachable hood) and I have the Velez Adventure (attached hood). What can I say? Prior to Paramo, I had had 5 different Goretex waterproofs, including some high end and expensive kit. All were great when new, but ALL became leaky eventually. In some cases, quite quickly. The opposite has been true with Paramo. We have worn them under a wide range of severe conditions from Dartmoor's finest horizontal deluged, to Cairngorm blizzards. They have been absolutely faultless. We have NEVER got wet in them! At this point I should stress that I don't like all Paramo kit - the cut of some of the jackets is far too baggy for me, but the Velez smocks are ideal. We've used them walking and mountaineering, mountain biking and even when running in the winter. Only downside is that they are warm, too warm for summer. We also tend to use them differently to a normal shell because of this. We tend not to carry them and put on when it gets wet, but rather we wear them over a Base Layer, like a fleece and shell combined. In winter, maybe just add a light fleece under too -they're really that warm. Also use the Paramo concept of 'overlayering' when you stop - putting an insulating layer over the smock, rather than underneath. Finally, washing and reproofing with Nikwax enables the garments to remain in 'as new' condition functionally, although ours are now showing some physical wear round cuffs, under rucksack straps and hip belts (the fabric is worn and a bit shiny). Expensive but worth it in my opinion.

Great review Abbie. I've had this jacket for 2 years now and it's great. Comfortable, dry, well cut and adjustable. Converted me from goretex boil in the bag feel. I got it from sport pursuit on a 50% deal. Probably wouldn't have bought at RRP (I never do 😂).
Heavy pack will press rain water in at lower back and run down legs, but paramo trousers are so comfortable and warm when wet it doesn't matter. They also self dry when the rain stops, unlike goretex where you stay cold and wet.
It is marmite but after years of expensive goretex jackets I'm much happier with the versatility of a single garment like this.

The analogy fabric so effectively sucks moisture from the skin that any maps or electronics stashed in the pockets get drenched. So waterproof cases are highly recommended!!!
I'd combine this jacket with a craghoppers elgin base layer for tick-repellency and wear paramos excellent Torres over the jacket as the weather dictates.
    Loved your livestream:)

I purchased the velez jacket about 6 weeks ago, haven’t managed to use it in real anger yet but so far so good. I’ve always wanted to try one as my walking buddy has one , he’s had it many years and always fairs better than me, especially in bad weather. The price is high but recently got it for £180 in one of their promotions on line along with a waterproofing set. Okay it wasn’t to colour I would have chosen but beggars can be choosers. I have to say that Abbie’s review is pretty much spot on , I agree with what she has said. Well done Abbie.

Good to hear your views on Paramo, I've recently got the smock version in pumpkin, it's my 2nd smock as I find them great for cycling and walking the dog. Very good in the wind and rain, only gripe is it's a bit sweaty in warmer weather but why would you wear it then. When wild camping if you get wet it seems to hold the water when taking it off in the tent which can be a annoying but overall it's good.

    Hi Abbie
I have a new Paramo Andina jacket which cost me under £200. It meets your criticisms: the vents go from the arms right through the armpits down to waist level. There are 2 internal pockets one good for my phone and another large enough for an OS map. Mine (M) weighs 670g so not super lightweight however it is super comfy. I hate the noise shell jackets so much prefer this. I still have my previous Paramo jacket which is just as waterproof as when I bought it at least 10 years ago. I'd certainly recommend checking these jackets out. I do use my Rab Kinetic on warmer days (another non-noisy jacket).
    Thanks for the review.

The secret to the zip I have discovered is to NOT hold the bottom of the zip. Instead just align the ends together, hold the bottom of the jacket (slightly away from the zip) and pull.

I have the Valez smock which I have had for 3 years and I love it. The large centre pocket easily stores an OS map. I also got it for £149 at sale price which is a massive bonus. I do find it too hot though for the height of summer.

Thanks Abbie, a very concise and honest appraisal I thought. I`ve had a Paramo smock for years and I love it. Over the years I`ve worn it in all seasons, and in all weathers, and it really has stood the test of time- the build quality is excellent. Yes, Paramo are a high end brand, and I get that some people may balk at paying big money for a jacket … but in my experience of hiking/outdoors gear, you always get what you pay for. I look forward to more reviews and your further adventures!

    Paramo are a game changer!
Most of the features you’re looking for are on the enduro 😁
    - internal pocket
    - chest pocket
    - better venting zips
Bit more expensive though but worth if you want the extras

Personally i really rate paromo, my mums wears her jackets everyday, it's 10 years old now and still perfect. They are pricey but they last, generally outdoor professionals get gifted gore-tex jackets, but they'll buy paramo ones

I have been using an ALTA 3 for a few years now, I find it very comfortable and warm in all but the worst conditions. it can start to get to saturation point in very wet weather . they are very easy to care for if you use the nikwax products , overall a good jacket for up in the hills or down on the lowlands

Thank you for an excellent review Abbie. I have the very same jacket in black. It fits beautifully but runs a bit warm for summer use, more autumn, winter and spring. I only had the jacket about 3 months and had hardly used it and the first time out in a heavy rainstorm I got seriously wet. I have three other Paramo jackets that have not let in water so sent it back to Paramo. They reproofed it and returned it to me. Am waiting to see how it holds out in the next downpour.

I've just bought one of these to replace my old one - finally wore out after about 10 years and recycled with Paramo so I got my £50 voucher! Did you miss the small inner zipped pocket on the right-hand side of the chest map pocket? Big enough to take a mobile phone. There's also a neat loop for attaching a mini carabiner, key ring etc. in the right-hand chest pocket.

Hi, Thank-you for the review Abbie. I have owned the velez smock and trousers for a few years now and love the paramo brand for many reasons. However I am experiencing some issues staying dry at the moment, despite following washing instructions carefully, am thinking this may be due to a build up of soap in the washing machine, as I know this can have a detrimental effect on the water repellency of the nikwax chemicals.

Paramo lasts for years. I mean for years and years and if you are a regular user and look after it, it is well worth it. They are also more versatile. Over 20 years well worth it and I have had mine for 10 years now and still works brilliantly. My wife has been through quite a few cheaper waterproofs as they fail.

Regatta is good entry level stuff certainly, I know from experience. It is also fine for low level stuff, or infrequent mountain use. If you're out in the mountains very frequently though, that's where stuff like Paramo becomes worth investing in.

I love my Paramo jacket - I think it's a Miranda but it doesn't actually say on it. Similar material to yours, has pit zips (very good for temperature control), pockers are obstruced by backpack straps though. You can get them cheaper if you shop around and buy last years colours or buy refurbished from them on ebay. If you return one on their scheme and it is still ok they will replace any worn items/do repairs and then sell on ebay. Love the ethics and if it lasts as i hope, it will be worth the money, people in my walking group have had theirs for 20 years and still going strong! A gortex jacket lasts me 5 years max before it need replacing.

Great review, thanks. I’ve just bought my second Paramo. The first was an eBay purchase ten years ago. When it arrived I reproofed it per Paramo’s instructions, and took it onto Pen-y-Fan in the worst that Winter could offer. Performed brilliantly. I have recently tried the Mountain Equipment Lhotse, which is lovely, but not nearly as good at handling heat when working hard in the high country.

I also walk hot. I would recommend just using a windproof over a t-shirt when moving in anything over 8ish°C. Then throw on a jacket when you stop. In summer it is no big deal if rain gets through the windproof. When you stop body heat and pretty much any Paramo jacket would see you dry out just a t-shirt in no time. Save the velez jacket for when you stop or for use in cooler temps or awful weather.

@@sicooper4230 Because there can be a world of difference between a sponsored review and a review of something that you have spent your own cash on. To use a horrible social media term Abbie is an "influencer". I respect her opinions and judgement and, more than once, have bought gear of the back of her recommendations /reviews. If a company sends her a freebie it is in the hope that her review will result in sales of that product, they did not send her a free jacket (assuming they did) because they were worried that Abbie might get cold. I'm not suggesting that Abbie isn't anything but 100 % straight as an arrow but transparency is important. Paramo tends to be a Marmite brand - you either love it or loathe it. In general they are heavier & warmer than other brands but I've used them for over 20 years. In fact, my first Paramo jacket was a Cascada which I bought (I think) about 22 years ago & is still going strong. I've also go a Quito which is cheaper & lighter than the Velez which I've had for about 7 years. It also has long pit zips but not much in the way of pockets. I think it's probably meant more for biking & running but I've used it for year round hill walking with a heavy sack & had no problems. I managed to rip it (a good 8 inches from the shoulder down 1 sleeve), sewed it up (well my wife did) & reproofed it & it is still fully weatherproof. As people have said, Paramo isn't the cheapest gear around to buy but, when I consider how long it lasts, I consider it very good value.

I love everything about Paramo...except one thing. I've owned many of their products over many years, and they all filled me with remorse as soon as I used them for anything remotely athletic ( apart from their walking tights which were not 'waterproof', which they don't make anymore). They were, without exception, just far too hot. Unfortunately, a clothing brand that are limited to dog walkers who get overly defensive as they bark and snarl at me (dogs and owners) for suggesting their anthropomorphised pet isn't actually 'under control' and those Glenmore Lodge/DoE 'mountain leader' types.

Listen "flower", if you had even half a brain, you'd calculate the whole-of-life cost rather than the initial outlay cost i.e Paramo lasts for 10+ years easily, normally much longer, whereas even the highest end goretex pro (usually costs the same as paramo if not more) usually lasts no more than 4-5 years before it starts to de-laminate. If you buy cheap mountain warehouse or regatta shells, well that's fair enough, you pays your money you makes your choice as they say, personally that kind of stuff is ok for occasional use, but isn't up to any kind of serious use, especially in winter in the mountains.
