    Well that's a cute couple, it's been a while since the last time we saw Naia, hope you're doing great!
    I recently switched from a XP-Pen monitor to a regular Intuos Pro Tablet, I bought the latter 2nd hand and, honestly, I think an used Wacom tablet it's still better value than a new Huion or XP-Pen for a similar price. Of course there's certain risks when buying 2nd hand products but Intuos products are made to last.

    • @BoroCG
      @BoroCG  Рік тому +10

      One thing Nadia was really looking for in a new tablet, was the thin bezels. Wacom always has these huge borders to support the hand on left and right. While makes sense for many, the space on the desk is a higher priority this time

      When my Wacom Intuos Pro died 3 years ago I bought this exact same tablet from Huion as a stopgap and let me tell you - I never bought another Wacom. No need for it. This is more than sufficient for my needs. I mostly do 3d sculpts and concept drawings and it's perfectly fine for that. And when I bought it, it cost a fraction of what the Wacom did years before.
      It feels about the same as a gen 4 Intuos.
      It's lighter. It's cheaper. It has more buttons.
      Hasn't broken yet even though I've taken it everywhere with me.
      Bought one of their 21 inch pen displays as well - cost as much as an Intuos and it's significantly better than a gen 3 cintiq I've used. I honestly don't even know why people bother with Wacom anymore... but I've never been a brandslave, so I might have a tad bit more of a clear mind on these things than most people. Placebo does have quite the effect on people, I've seen it myself.

      @@Anonymous_Man well happy to hear that, I've never tried a Huion although many people had told me that they are pretty similar to XP-Pen.
      Wacom is terribly overpriced right now, they're still the best manufactures of drawing tablets but not by a lot. Most proffesionals still prefer them just because they can afford them...

      @@Anonymous_Man Valuable info, there so thanks! I do like to buy quality because I want it to last. I don't have much disposable income, and it's only getting worse w/ the inflation rates hiking like a mofo these days. The real issue I see with buying new items from the internet is this: all the reviews everywhere, including youtube, have people who want to make a great impression on their sponsors....or they've been paid to say something nice and focus more on the positives and never mention the negatives. They've become useless, and it's a real shame. There are like five reviewers I trust on youtube, these days. Considering how many vids there are for reviews, that's not a lot of folks that don't sell out.

    2:16 I absolutely agree. I have used display tablets, but pen-tablets are the best. Also, I love having the freedom of choosing very specific monitors instead of being tied to not so great ones of the Cintiq alternatives (even the Cintiq non-pro series are kind of bad...and Cintiq pros are waaay overpriced). An Eizo or a good Benq + pen tablets do totally rock for pro work.

    I'm actually thinking of getting the 2nd gen XP Artist 10. I have several displayless tablets but I realized that I want an experience closer to traditional. When I survey UA-cam artists the divide seems to be in whether they primarily paint or sculpt, or if they're doing a lot of line art. The animators and comics artists use huge screen tablets, for the most part, and I think that's because it lets them see their hand and the tip of the pen and so they get more precision when working freehand.
    I did focus on ergonomics first(I sit on the floor with a Saiji folding and tilting desk which lets me change posture, height and angle throughout a session) and that is how I ended up screenless, but I find that I gravitate towards traditional because there's no computer in the way, so setup is easy and there's zero lag, zero aliasing.
    The only misgiving I have is that I know that I tend to just use common stuff: I like phone drawing with a cheap mesh stylus, I like Uniball ball pens(specifically the Vision Needle and AIR) as much as my fountain pens or felt tips, and I like smooth papers that take those media well. If I don't get much use out of the screen it's more techno-junk. But on the other hand, getting it in small format, it's like having a little sketchbook...

    I recently bought a Huion HS610 going from an Wacom Intuos pro. For a tablet that is literally 1/7 of the price, I am extremely pleased and surprised. The wacom drivers were constantly screwing up (granted the tablet did last 8 years). There was no way I'd buy anything without the wheel adjuster, and it seems to work almost just as well as the Intuos. My only complaints so far (after a couple months) are, I haven't been able to adjust the pressure curve to what I'm used to, and there is no eraser on the back. But since I use Krita, I use one of the buttons on the side for E (there are a whopping 12 buttons on the side). There are other small nitpicky complaints. But frankly, none of them would make me not recommend this tablet to people.

    • @sefrautiq
      @sefrautiq Рік тому

      HS610 user here. I'm to quite happy with a tablet after a cheapest S size Wacom. It's bigger, it has Tilt, which completely changed my artstyle, and its cheap as hell. But honestly I'd like to switch to other brand, maybe even wacom again, for more stable experience because:
      - Pen tilt is very wiggly if your strokes are slow, its very annoying if you want to use the tilt all the way, and not just for brush rotation (ua-cam.com/video/GKHzXLPwnE0/v-deo.html)
      - Tilt completely disables sometimes for 5 seconds or so if you're making a lot of quick lines
      - As you said, pressure curve is not perfect at all
      - If you press hard on the tip of the pen, the following lines will have broader pressure range for a while
      - Tablet disconnects after sleep or reboot, and the driver prone to malfunction too
      - Pen is too thick, pen buttons are falling out

    • @Aduah
      @Aduah Рік тому

      @@sefrautiq the problem your mentioning with the driver going to sleep is the same problem I had with Wacom. It would just stop working/recognizing the tablet. But it started not only doing after asleep and wake, but also after unplug/replug, or just breathing on it wrong. It would do it in the middle of drawing. The pressure curve and any tilt problems (which admittedly I don't use tilt at all) are lesser problems to me than driver problems. I haven't had any driver problems with the huion yet. But after all the Wacom driver problems, this has been a breath of fresh air.

I just let others know about the stuff that is STILL NOT FIXED in the "fresh" H1161 model, and that the issues that you see in the video was around for at least 3 YEARS. And I strongly doubt that they will be fixed via driver updates. I wonder how XP-Pen compares to Huion in this regard

      I use the HS610 on a Mac, and I am quite happy with it. The Wacom at the same price range offer no buttons, no tilt and lower resolution. I am really happy with it …. And it’s very intuitive to reconfigure the buttons. However I would love to have backlit buttons, as I often work in the dark. Softkeys is something I never use, because of the lack of visibility and accidentally touching them.

    my Huion Inspiroy 640P died after a year. Customer services asked for tons of information, videos of the fault etc and eventually told me it was after one year and they couldn't do anything, which sucked.. otherwise.. I had a great time with the tablet.. I didn't find limitations at the time though the accuracy wasn't as precise as my wacom intuos 950M(i think). On the flip side the Huion was better for working fast, button layout, smooth surface. For some reason the Wacom I use has a matt surface which is hard on nibs and I find a little unpleasant to use, though it is more accurate. So.. the Huion is about half the price of Wacom and does the job almost just as well... though durability is an issue.. at least in my case.

    So I wonder... Previously I was using Wacom Intuos Pro, had to sell it to survive some dark times in my life. Now I'm getting back on track and thinking bout gettin back my tablet... but Intuos Pro still costs pretty much, especially comparing to something like this Huion... and I wonder what are the exact differences, or just let's say Huion H1161 vs. Intuos Pro, or maybe you know other, better, cheaper alternative. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Intuos Pro was pretty much my ultimate tablet (although, I only had Bamboo before, so it sure was an upgrade) meaning that I don't need more than that so is there, like I said, some cheaper alternative which will pretty much do the same thing?

    i think boro may have got a faulty unit with phantom clicks. happened to one of my styluses too, i think its a common flaw in the specific style of styluses they sell for these 'mid range' models going by other people's posts on their customer service forum and faqs. also nadia was right, that stylus design is bad for dust. apparently the dust can enter and interfere with the pressure sensor giving it touch information even while not physically touching the tip to the surface.
    but it could also be unoptimised driver for his particular display set up as boro suspected.

    I get what Nadia means ( 31:35 ) ... I realized that with my Huion Kamvas 22 (a Display tablet, it has a 22 inches screen). I have it now only as an external monitor and went back to my very old and trusty Wacom XL (2009!). With a Wacom L waiting patiently in a box once this thing _finally_ breaks (if that's ever possible, with the love and care that I handle it...reason why it lasted, ofc). The subtlety of the Wacom pen-tablet (dunno if it is all the pen's merit, or the combination) is far superior. I had to realize it with a direct comparison in my hands. I had always defended the alternative brands over Wacom's pricing scheme, but I was _so_ wrong. My advice now is always go for cheap Wacom devices, meaning pen tablets, they are a ton better than even the display-tablet competitors. Of course, Cintiq prices are crazy. But a Wacom L, that's a dream come true (and it has really good simulated paper friction, too, unlike the older XL). Or if that's too expensive for some, a Wacom Intuos (non pro), 169 euros on Amazon (new), it's more expensive than the alternatives, but it is _really_ worth it, IMO, if it fits in one's budget, of course. If not, one can configure this Huion's driver and the painting/3D app's (of choice) settings enough so that you get used to it. But IMO the difference in accuracy, lag and control is very much in favor of Wacom. I don't like this fact, but I have to admit it after very heavy testing of the 3 devices. And I hope Huion and XP-Pen keep evolving, so that they keep pushing Wacom, but I am not using other than their technology...
    Still, I think you can tune the pressure levels in both the Huion driver (of course, with a per-app configuration) and whatever the app's (ie, Clip Studio, Krita, etc) settings, as I say. It can be a world of difference once you get to find the magic values/combination. I mean, I _could_ work with my Huion Kamvas 22 if I had no better option. I just prefer the superior control of the Wacom Intuos XL (by a lot). I also got a Huion Inspiroy (at the same time!), and it was even worse than the Kamvas. This Kamvas is not useless, it's serviceable (surely people never having used Wacom won't notice anything), but... the comparison...
    My advice. If it is not a bad moment (in $$, but with the moving and all, it could be) to do that and it was an Amazon purchase, look for a refund and get a Wacom Intuos Medium. A "One by Wacom" [ not "The One", that's a (expensive for what it is) 13" display tablet ] which are much cheaper than intuos (100 euros less), of course in *Medium Size* , as Small (S) is useless for most stuff. It is a lot cheaper, but the issue is it comes with very few pressure levels, like 2k or so, instead of 4k of the Intuos Medium or 8k of Wacom Intuos Pro (after seeing how Huion and XP-Pen work, I cannot for the life of me compare wacom's pressure levels to those brands'. I think it's another "language" even . So, the "8k" in these brands doesn't mean much to me, is not a factor). Also, the pressure level matter is _overrated_ . INDEED, the Wacom Intuos 4 XL that I , and I believe, also Boro has, it has "only" *2048* levels (same than these cheapo new ones, but tech has evolved A LOT in Wacom, so it means surely even more than 2048). And we know the XL is absolutely great!! Even more.. I did draw all concept art and 2D/3D retouch for an entire Diablo II - ish game (well, my part on it, but we were only 3 game artists there!) with no problems at all, at a company, and those ancient wacom tablets they provided us with, those had only 256 levels (not even 1k) of pressure! . So, I am very close to bet that for the "One by Wacom" Medium (M) size is quite a better choice than this Huion (or equivalent XP-Pen), and in my euro country's Amazon I am finding it right now for 65 to 70 euros, quite cheap, identical to what you paid for the huion. To play totally safe, an Intuos Medium(M), instead. But I'm convinced any of the two options would be better than this...
    Of course, I realize you and Nadia say in one moment that she uses tablet buttons a lot. I am like Boro, I use the keyboard a lot. But I have got used too much to use the XL disc for brush size, it's just so incredibly fast and keeps me in the zone. The "One By Wacom" does not have any buttons nor disc, at all. that's were they cut corners for the pricing, I guess. I still think is preferable, and have a small bluetooth keyboard close, instead. But if anything, the intuos M size (non pro, of course) has 4 buttons that you can configure easily (but no disc nor slider). If buttons are a total must, the Intuos M could be the solution, if 4 buttons are enough. I just don't need buttons :D.
    I mean, I'd go as far as getting a mini articulated arm (sth like you showed of your phone, but a bit stronger and longer, from "Amazon Basics") in ebay or Amazon, to have a tiny bluetooth keyboard just besides the tablet, with a ton more "buttons" there...but so not losing the pen control that Wacom provides, in comparison.
    Very nice video. :)
    *Edit: Wait* .... Just watched the ending now, after writing all above... You do need to uninstall fully wacom drivers before installing Huion's, it's how it goes with huion (and many other brands). Otherwise many problems arise that can make the tablet behave badly... I believe a clean install with all fixed might give you both a more positive experience (but I meade clean installs and all with both my Huion pen-tablet and my huion display tablet. And in pen control they are not even close to a Wacom XL). Anyway, if you get to be happy and comfortable with the Huion, that's all what matters.

      I disagree. Wacom medium was my first tablet. Back in animation school, I used the large wacom. I also use the Apple Pencil which many agree feels as good as any wacom especially with paper like. When I compare them to my huion plus 22, I don’t feel a difference. I am a light handed user who heavily relies on pressure sensitivity. It is important for the pen to trigger with the smallest amount of force and be able to have a huge range of pressure. My Huion tablet does that just like the Wacom’s I’ve personally used. When I hear people say otherwise, I feel they got placebo effect. Or maybe they got older models with out screen etching which btw, even the newest of wacoms that cost from 300 to 600 don’t have

      @@bobsteven2363 I took almost two weeks testing both the Wacom Intuos 4 XL (no laminated glass or etc as that is just a pen-tablet, no screen. Neither "paper texture" like current L ) and a Huion Kamvas 22 (in any case the issues don't affect the parallax matter; it's not involved in the particular problems happening), swapping constantly among them (by full clean uninstall of each driver every time) and also did so with one of Huion's latest - back then- (I believe it was one year ago or so) and biggest pen-tablets. The difference with the display-tablet was huge in control, lag, responsiveness and accuracy in favor of the Wacom XL. I _wanted_ it to be the opposite as I just had put my money on those two tablets. This is why I tested them for so freaking long and intensively, as I hate to purchase any piece of hardware and don't use it then in everything for at least 10 years (the XL is around 13 now...so... even if the Huions were not of this year, heck, the XL is in much more disadvantage as is _way_ older than that).
      But way worse, the difference between the Wacom Intuos 4 XL and and the Huion pen-tablet was just out of the charts. While the active area size of the huion was pretty big, the accuracy in small details (fast small lines, etc), the lag and overall control was not there. I can draw and paint with _anything_ (so, would be able to draw with any of these), since quite long I don't need software estabilizers for the line-art even in comic inking. I've used all sort of digital tablets on the market, and I'd use any of these two if I only had that option and nothing else. Heck, I have even inked with toothpicks and black ink while at college (Fine Arts) during a full year in fast 3 minutes line work of complex (3 models) model poses. But I did not see a single reason (other than justify to myself my purchase somehow) when the Intuos 4 XL gives me a lot more control in everything. I am not speaking about initial activation force (although imo it is clearly less subtle in Huion's; very obvious when you are working with both in the same week) or pressure sensitivity. It's about different factors. I don't let myself be confused by placebo effects or impressions, I check everything, every matter and detail, every setting, and avoid every possible issue that could be affecting perception, checking many things, etc. And have been painting and drawing for 44 years (I mean, it's not like I am buying my first tablets or etc... I started in digital art when there was no Wacom brand, only Summagraphics and Kurta, around '91 or earlier, if I recall correctly). Indeed, I believe that those not noticing the differences might be doing mostly certain workflows (you seem to be an animator, I am a realistic digital painter and comic artist (includes accurate inking). It might be that), but not others where the difference is painfully clear. Even more, even if doing same workflows, not everybody paints in the same way. So, in certain styles or even grips, the hardware disadvantages could happen to be masked/not noticed.

      @@3polygons hmm, that is really strange that was your experience. I did notice you said, Kamvas 22, which is really old, I have only tested kamvas pro 13 and kamvas plus 22 which are far newer (huion fairy new compared to Wacom) In total, I have had 6 tablets. 2 being huion screen tablets. I don’t use pen stabilizer. Throughout my years, i never felt any lack of control or accuracy. I am mainly in game dev, creating 3d assets with zbrush and blender and doing realistic paintings on my free time. At one point, i did do a comparison between Wacom, apple and huion. I used 3 devices, my iPad, a laptop and my desktop. Switching across the devices, from slow to fast strokes to blending tests,I didn’t feel a difference. And by actually painting I didn’t feel any differences either. Except on the iPad, but the difference there was having no keyboard shortcuts. In Convos with friends and colleagues, we agreed that huion was pretty good, half the workstations at work have huions and the other half wacoms. The only inferior tablets that I have had the chance to use, have been the Samsung tablets, those are atrociously bad, the Microsoft surface tablets, and a xp pen artist tablet

    • @3polygons
      @3polygons Рік тому

      @@bobsteven2363 Yep, the Kamvas 22 is "old", now ...But the Wacom XL is way older (2009) to be fair on the comparison. I was indeed very close to get in Amazon, back in the day, actually the Kamvas Plus version (indeed, the 24 inches was also out for a while, for both XP and Huion, and I prefer 24 inches monitors), as it was already out, and the QLED screen (color gamut, etc) was a tad better in every aspect and reviews. But finally, with the possible burn-in effect of oleds (though QLED is somewhat different), and as I was handling amazingly with the XL, I had no reason to invest further than a great 400 euros offer I found, for merely a workflow experiment. Indeed, I had thought, worst case scenario, (which I did not really believe possible), it'd always serve as a monitor for references (it's what it is doing right now...though my Eizo ColorEdge obtains much more accurate colors and way wider range after hardware calibration of both) or extra panels .
      I was basing my purchases though on reviews and what colleagues said about both XP-Pen and Huion, which was with some exceptions mostly positive feedback. Meaning, other game artists and designers (I've worked in a few fields; the one that I don't miss is tech support).
      So that you realize how much in favor I was about alternative brands, my plan was getting first this Kamvas 22, just as a test drive, to test the waters, see if (I had a Cintiq 12WX many years before - sold it after 8 months- , but that was too tiny res and physical size for me (ipad pro size, a tad bulkier, 1280x800 screen). I have big hands too, lol. Maybe am a bit of an old fart, too) while pen-tablets having become my natural workflow, like a second nature, built as an instinct now, if I could adapt to display-tablets' posture and etc. But the idea was to very shortly after, go for the Huion 24 (I had read about issues of the XP-Pen 24). As back then I was much in favor of Huion for display-tablets, and XP or Wacom for pen-tablets.
      The thing is, a many years newer product than my old Wacom (2020 versus 2009) could not compete with it (in my tests, at least). I must say, it was (is) "functional". I can draw and paint with it. I just get much more accuracy and less lag with the XL (in same computer, good installs, etc). I also - like you- do have many colleagues that are very happy with Huion and XP-Pen tablets (particularly the XP-pen Deco Pro Medium with its double disc and good accuracy). I was only mentioning my tests and experience :). I don't understand why others do not notice it, but I don't discard that it might be possible.
      I worked with a Graphire (or Volito, can't remember, it was 2001!), previous to Bamboo series, and it was an A5 or A6 size! (now I don't recommend my friends anything smaller than Medium) To make all 2D drawings (concept art) and 2D UI, 2D-3D retouch work with a 256 levels of pressure back then. I worked a full year 10 hours a day with that and got the job done (in very poor celeron computers (we had a good Athlon, though), even for the times... that company was almost broke). So, yep, we all can use literally whatever for painting. I'd use even the huion pen-tablet (quite worse drawing experience than the Kamvas, in my tests) to get the job done, if I had no other chance. But every second I earn, any stroke that lands accurately, and faster workflow, I must take it, no matter what. Even if the difference was to be small (not what I noticed. Maybe it's just me. But I have pieces of hardware where the difference is small, and there I can see the placebo effect as a possibility. I can't see it in this case).
      Maybe if at some point I get my hands on a Huion 24, or something even newer, I might change my conclusion, who knows. But in terms of age, I want to emphasize that I am comparing it (a pair of Huion tablets from 2020; pen tablet and display tablet) with a Wacom from 2009. BTW, I cannot put links here, but I am just checking an article that says the Kamvas 22 and Kamvas 22 Plus were launched the same year... Dunno how accurate it is, but it should be, as seems it's a press release from the actual Huion company, "Shenzhen Huion Animation Technology ", "SHENZHEN, China, July 10, 2020 ". The article speaks about the launch of the two products.
      Anyway, I believe 99% of people will be very happy with their Huion product(/s).

Some people don't have the benefit of having another artist to speak to and see how that dialogue can go. But she might not be interested in that....which is fine too. Over the years you've mentioned that she had really good critiques for things regarding art, and it'd be fun to get her perspective on art-making, as well. (but only if she wants of course)
