  • Check out Randy's camp and clothing setup for an Arizona wilderness backpack elk hunt in early October at 10,000 feet.
    For a remote, high elevation hunt, Randy only trusts very high quality gear to keep him safe and comfortable on the mountain.

    "Buy once, cry once!" Some of the very best advice I have ever been given. Buy the good stuff the first time.

    Thanks Randy. I'm headed for my 1st back country hunt. The last quote was needed for me to spend the extra for a tent."invest in good gear, you wont regret it".

    These modern high-tech light-weight tentage is amazing. I used to go camping with Army-surplus canvas shelter-halves...that shrank over time.

    Great video. I would add that depending on weather I change my bag or tent. For those of you that have to go on the cheep hit up the local army surplus. Get a three part bag and go. The down side is they are heavy

    I wear merino blend boxers. They don't smell and don't chafe if you get wet.

    Age 65+ hunters: A 4-season wall tent with cot and heater is the only way to go. Osteoarthritis in both knees and shoulders makes crawling in and out of smaller tents a nightmare. Your crawling days are over! You need to be able to walk in and out of your tent. You also need a normal height bed for getting in and out of bed. You'll also need knee braces for those long hikes while hunting. A little off track here, but improvising, adapting, and overcoming will add years to your hunting pleasure as you grow more mature!

    Great video. Have you ever thought about ditching the tent and going to a camping hammock? I've found them to be more comfortable than ground sleeping and tents.

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  6 років тому +2

      I've looked into it, but we end up in a lot of fowl weather where a hammock would create some challenges.

    • @rwmagnus
      @rwmagnus 4 роки тому

      Randy Newberg, Hunter Not if you have the right hammock gear. I suspect your tent with vestibule might provide more shelter for your gear. Look into www.warbirdbonnet.com and their Blackbird XLC hammock simply the best. Pair it with the Superfly tarp and its a very very good foul weather system. I’ll take a hammock over a tent any day for comfort.

    • @scatdak
      @scatdak 3 роки тому

      @@rwmagnus Never tried one but I would think that a hammock would take up less room in a pack.

    Hey Randy do you ever plan on coming back to North Dakota to archery hunt mule deer again, if so what part of the season do you plan on coming back early, late, or midway through.

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  6 років тому

      Not sure if/when we will get there. If we do, it will not be in December as it was last time.

    • @mattschindele1576
      @mattschindele1576 6 років тому

      If you do make it, I would highly recommend near the 3rd weekend in October I went into it expecting to see very few deer but we had seen over 80 on our first day in somewhere we had never been previously, only digitally scouted. We had 4 or 5 chances at really decent bucks in 3 and a half days.

    Can you go into a bit more detail sometime about your clothing and layering? Sitka and all these companies sell so many different shirts, vests, jackets, etc. I'm not even sure where to start. I'd be nice to know before dropping so much money on clothes. Thanks!

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  6 років тому +1

      I would watch the videos on the Sitka website. Their layering system is very logical.

    Maybe I missed it, but when describing your clothes I didn’t see a jacket/outer layer mentioned. Have a preference for one in the conditions you were in?

    Wish I had the disposable income for all that kit. Did my first mule deer hunt this season with “bargain” gear. Wasn’t too bad, but could’ve been a lot better.

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  6 років тому +7

      My gear is not cheap. It is an investment. I spend 10+ weeks per year in this set up, so I need to invest in the best I can find.
