To be fair, it's only a legend that Tai Chi Chuan began in Chen Village. It is highly likely that it has its roots in Shamanic practices and that some version of Tai Chi Chuan existed long before just not how we know it today. However the principles of action and the strategies of fighting would have been well established long ago. Sadly much of the history is lost and is now not available so we can only theorise over its origins. I would implore all those teachers out in the big wide world to teach fully and honestly so that those who do understand this art for its true depths, including its martial content to all who come to learn. Otherwise we will lose these arts forever and no amount of cultural embodiment will save it.

It's not a legend. It's just as far as we can trace back the origin of the current art. Back then, it was not even called Taiji Quan but Chen Quan.
