what we are seeing is the very near future...very little actual man power in shipyards..all robotic...If you listen to the video..all about less man powers, more efficiency, more accuracy, no mistakes or repairs...if you saw...very few humans were actually working in the shipyard compared to NNSY or Newport News...very scary,,what took 27 men now takes 5...imagine what other reductions in force was done in the name of robotics?? The warehouses ,even, were all robotic..and CLEAN...as was the entire yard...the U S Shipbuilding industry is in for some big trouble....

As an ex shipping veteran, the Chinese yards were still backwards in early 2000s, Even Jiangnan. My clients built newbuilts in Japan which have much in quality and service support.I am sure many quality Chinese shipyards have risen to the tasks recently, looking at the foreign vessels being built there. If quality is maintained, Chinese prices and continuing on stream ancillary ancillary supplies are readily available, it would be hard for Japanese to compete. Both Japan and Korea don't have the steel scale to compete with China. The European and Japanese makers on tool and machineries are keen to sell to China yards as a long term customers. Kudos to Jiangnan.

Like South Korea and Japan, China will face serious difficulties in finding workers in the future due to its low birth rate. Shipbuilding is a typical manpower-intensive industry. Both Korean and Japanese shipbuilding industries collapsed due to a shortage of shipbuilding workers.

@@하늘을나는돼지-n8e True. But India wanted to build ships too but their labour have landed on ME, Singapore and Malaysian Yards which are small in comparison and doing repairs more often. Hence, skill development is rather limited due to limited period of employ. There is also no large shipping groups there.

Well if the World's largest shipyard wasn't in Gdansk, Poland, I guess the story would be true. Where are 6 of 10 super tankers and container ships on the ocean built? Gdansk. Where has RUSSIA had it's last 6 carriers built? (Excepting the nukey power plants) Gdansk. Ask any merchant marine skipper-who builds the BEST merchant ships? The Poles! The Japanese a distant second, the Koreans a far distant third. The US Coast Guard will tell you what container ships can take North Atlantic winter storms without breaking down or breaking-up- Polish built ones and NO ONE ELSES! Also Pacific typhoons...and a$$-hole Suez Canal Pilots can't run theirs aground!

    • @raylee5030

From what I gather, the Gdansk has fallen into hard times. It now employs about a tenth (2000) vs. over 20000 in it's glory days. It also needs life support from various EU firms.
