  • Post# 20: Why I Passed On The Rickenbacker
I decided not to buy a Rickenbacker after all. It seems like every time I get close to buying one, it either disappears or I hear another horror story about one. I understand that the ones made from 2022 on have better bridges, but it then I hear about issues with the truss rods. The cons seem to outweigh the pros, so I will leave it like this; if Rickenbacker shows up for $1,500 or less, I will get one, if not, I will stay away.

I'm a happy Ric owner. Could be a case of winners and losers, but My bass must have been one of the winners. It will be with me till I die. I wouldn't say it's my number one, but everytime I pick it up I haven't to question why it isn't. I have to admit... I saw the video that was made by Daves world of fun stuff... I thought it was hilarious too.

I own several basses including Gibsons, Fender, G&L, and two Rickenbackers, a 4003s and a 4003. Two truss rods and all both are great. No issues at all. Sometimes you have to take a chance and see for yourself.

Personally I think you should have got the ric, yeah they have eccentricity but the Rickenbacker guitars and basses are extremely well made, they are so unique it's either a love or hate for many people, yeah the Hagstrom is nice but it had a broken switch as well ,when I was a teenager my left-handed dad had a right handed ric 3001 bass(kinda their p-bass) so I played it, man that was a great bass and I miss it after he sold it, he regrets selling it as much as I miss it , the thing about the weird truss rod and difficult set up, it never ever needed any adjustments, nothing ever broke on it and it sounded huge even with just a single pick-up, right now I am in the market looking for a Rickenbacker guitar, I've always "passed on" them when I've had the opportunity to grab one and never stopped wanting one. I'm gonna predict you'll end up getting a Rick eventually, finding one just a little more perfect.

The new bass sounds and looks absolutely brilliant!
You really dodged a bullet by not buying that Rick. I chatted with Geddy's bass tech (Skully) some years ago. He said the Ricks were a nightmare. Soft frets, low output, faulty wiring and the worst bridges in bass history. "Those Ricks decomposed during every show. Geddy & I were so happy when he changed to the Jazz basses full time."
I've had one for about 10 years & it hasn't been out of it's case in 4. No motivation to play it at all. It looks nice, I guess.

    • @progrockjock
      @progrockjock  2 роки тому +3

Thank you! That is so cool that you got to chat with Skully! However, I'm sorry to hear that you no longer play your Rick. I always wanted one in my collection, but now I guess that will never be. There have been some developments with the Hagstrom, so I might be returning it. Some of the frets aren't right but I'm going to let a tech check it out. Ricks are $2,000 and Hagstrom Vikings normally go for $1,249. I just feel like I need to be thankful for the basses I bought 20 & 30 years ago and quit buying more.

I've owned a number of Rickenbackers over the years and picked up a 2015 4003S last year and love the tone. I also own a US Geddy Lee Jazz, go figure. Those two instruments are night and day, not for quality but a case of apples and oranges. I've owned Alembics, Fenders, Gibsons, Hofners, G&L's, Music Mans, Rick's, Steinbergers, Travis Beans, Warwicks, Yamahas, and a few more that I've forgotten about. They're all perfect and they're all disasters, every one of them has a pros and cons list. If you passed on the Rock at this time, you may find one in the future that is your cup of tea. Same thing about amps and strings, they're all different and it depends on what you need and want at any given moment.

I will say that what I really miss are some of the bass treasures I had and basically thrown away. a matching pair of Stingrays (one frettless), a Ken Smith. The list goes on. When I was 17, a Rick may have set you back $800. I paid $2,000 for the 2 Stingrays together and those would easily go for $7,000 today. That Ken Smith alone would be worth $8,000 today and I paid $2400 for it at age 23. I have a custom shop Strat that I paid $1,200 for in 1995. It's worth around $3,000 today. Best of luck! Were we sure it wasn’t plugged in using the Rick-O-Sound jack?
If it was, you’ll only get one pickup’s signal if you’re not using the splitter box.
      [ahem]… don’t ask me how I know.

Rickenbacker's are the best! The initial setup is a chore with the original bridge, not sure about the new one. The original bridge requires you going to the hardware store and buying a file to file the bridge down properly, on top of everything else. But once it's set up right you're good for years, with a couple minor tweaks of the truss Rod's. The only downfall of the Rickenbacker is they're going for $2,500 right now, and it's not going to hold up as well as a $1,800 fender.

New ricks (as in 2021+) have been getting new and improved bridges and truss rods, much easier to set up and from what I understand the frets are no longer soft. Im waiting until I can find a newer model 4003SW, its cheaper but the main sacrifice is the binding, stereo output and the premium inlay. If anyone has any stories from ricks dated 2021, I'd love to hear them. I'd hate to buy one and find out all these recent improvements weren't enough.

I recently had the opportunity to buy a '75 4001 and I didn‘t let it pass like the 1972 Fender Precision three tone sunburst from my drummers dad. But back then I was a student and couldn’t afford the price. But now I could afford the Rickenbacker but also got it a few hundred bucks cheaper than I was prepared for to pay. So I did it and didn’t regret it. At least not till today. But there are also some things to do, like changing the bridge and tuners and perhaps get the paint a little bit polished. So the money I saved will be invested into making it even more beautiful. And like you did, I do love the looks, the feeling, the handling and the sound that is totally on the opposite of my Stingray MM 5.

Your bass has a very clean earthy tone. It sounds great to my ears. And your playing style is reminiscent of The Ox, Thunderfingers himself, the late great John Entwistle. I'm a guitar player. I love Rickenbacker 6s and 12s. But if I ever need to buy a bass, I will be seriously looking to get a Viking ... when they eventually start importing them down here again. Yes, another Aussie watching your video. Cheers from the Land Down Under.

    • @progrockjock
      @progrockjock  2 роки тому +1

Thank you very much! You had me at “The Ox” ...I am honored. I’m so grateful that I got to see them with Ringo’s son on drums back in 1997. They played Quadrophenia in its entirety. The Who Sell Out is one of my favorites! All of The Who has been an influence on me since the beginning. Townsend, Hendrix, Eddie and Prince got me interested in playing the guitar. However, Spike Cassidy, John Christ and James Hetfield gave me the confidence to actually play it. However, in the middle of all those influences, speaking of the land down under, I also love INXS, Midnight Oil and Men At Work. I didn’t get into AC⚡DC until much later. Cliff Burton led me over to the bass, which is where I’m most confident, but I love occasionally picking up my trusty Strat and cranking up my Marshall for as long as my ears can stand it.
I’m sad to report that I returned the Hagstrom Viking Bass. There was an issue with the frets and the pickup selector switch still didn’t feel quite right after a few more adjustments. I’ve had a change of heart and will grab the next good Rickenbacker I see.

@@progrockjock Ah well there ya go. Looks like you are destined to have a RIC after all. Have you considered Yamaha or Ibanez instruments? We have seen quite a few of them down here over the years. Many solid models usually a lot better value for money than the RICs and Fenders. RICs are very pricey in OZ now. Imports have dried up due to stock shortages. The used guitar market has skyrocketed because of the pandemic.
A few other solid rock Aussie bassmen you might want to check out ... Steve Kilbey of The Church, the late great Ted Mulry of Ted Mulry Gang, Tony Mitchell of Sherbet, Greg Mcainsh of Skyhooks, Roger McLachlan and George McArdle from Little River Band, and Chris Joannou of Silverchair. Cheers to you :)

It may be destiny with the Ric. We’ll see. Yes, I have considered both brands. I started with an Ibanez and I just bought another one recently. Looked at several Yamaha basses but have yet to buy one. I do have 2 Yamaha acoustic guitars. In Atlanta, you can find a lot of decent inexpensive gear but there’s a lot of trash to sift through. You can get a Yamaha for $200 to $1,000 depending on the quality. Same with Ibanez.
I definitely know of Steve Kilbey, The Little River Band, and Silverchair but the other names you mentioned, I know nothing about. I will check them out.

Glad you're happy with your new bass. As a rick owner I agree they have their quirks but I love them so much. The dual truss rod is actually a good thing by the way, no idea why everyone harps on about it. Makes the neck bulletproof, is turning a extra nut really so bad? 😂
The older bridges can be a bit quirky I will admit, easily fixed by using a post 2018 model or upgrading the bridge. But hey some people like them too as they have the inbuilt padding, a very unique feature.

Bought my Rickenbacker 4003 at Sam Ash on Manhattan 17 years ago. Love it still. Flawless. Some problems with the electronics lately (some short circuit in the output jack - works OK when I take it out of the body, perhaps the cavity is too tight). The problem with Rickenbacker (in general, not just basses) is quality control is sometimes not good enough, and customer service is horrible.

Thanks for sharing your story about the Rick dude. I have some other impressions. It is said that you either love or hate Rickenbaker basses. I am aware of the issues that come along with the bass because I have owned two. Since I had the 4001 1976 I learned that Rickenbacker is a bass you have to somehow tame. It is a challenge but the reward is just for a few dedicated bass players who find their way out through the nuances. Then I sold this 4001 to pay for my surgery. And I missed its sound as you miss a lover. I have to mention that I also own a Ken Smith and federa basses, non of them able to produce The SOUND. I knew it was going to be hard to get another one because there are not many lefty Ricks around. However I found this 4003 lefty fire glow on eBay, and went for it. By that time, I had already watched tons of videos of players complaining about the sound, quality, shape, thrusrods, etc. but on the other hand some others workshopping Rickenbackers. I did not mind other people’s opinion, I had my own experience, I was able to tame a 1976 old Rick once, and this 2019 wasn’t that hard. I had to cross the border to go and get it. It can become an obsession, I know, and I had to break the bank, yes I admit. I could have gotten a much cheaper Chinese replica (No WAY)
Now when I’m onstage I can tell you man, this bass gives you wings. The bass you bought instead of the Rick, is nice. But you will always have that little voice whispering in your ear: “what if…” thank you for reading.

I should've been a lefty but I was forced into being right-handed for penmanship, which as you know, ultimately died at the hands of modern-day technology. I think you're being a little cautious about the qualities of a Rickenbacker bass. If they were that unreliable, then Chris Squire (who ran a 1964 model as his main bass for 50 years), and Lemmy wouldn't have stuck with them.
I've got one I bought new in 1990, and it's been nothing but utterly reliable, and used regularly. It's had one fret dressing in all that time, and I run it with Rotosound RS66s.
I do my own setups, and only need to tweak the truss rods every 3 or 4 years. That's an easy process - anyone can judge a straight edge, it's not rocket science.
I play Fenders too, but nothing sounds like a Rickenbacker bass. Don't be scared of them, as they are wonderful instruments.

Dave's World of Fun Stuff is the reason why I hesitated on wanting a Rickenbacker for so many years, but I absolutely love mine and I'm so glad to have one. I still love watching his Rickenbacker videos, I've been watching him since way before his channel was even called "Dave's World of Fun Stuff." Most of his criticisms are true about Rickenbackers, but their quirks really aren't as bad as he makes them out to be. He doesn't hate them as much as he acts, it's just that he sort of became known as the "I hate Rickenbackers" guy and it's a fun and funny part of his commentary and schtick.
There are definitely some design characteristics of Rickenbacker basses that are just downright stupid and nonsensical, and maybe they're way overpriced considering all their goofy quirks, but they're definitely not the nightmare some people make them out to be. If you think they look cool, play nicely, and you like how they sound, then definitely don't be discouraged from grabbing one up if you find a really good deal on one! :)

Mine is a 2020 and the dual truss rods aren’t as big of a deal as people make them out to be just do your research. I’ve only had to adjust them once in 3 plus years and other than that it’s been string changes. With Rick maintenance I’ve learned the most from Dave’s world and Patrick Hunter. Dave’s world is only one person who had a bad experience 30 plus years ago and he’s yet to work on a 4000 with the new improvements. Plus a month ago he did a video and said he doesn’t hate Rick’s but strongly dislikes them lol. Get the newer single If the dual rods scare you that much or take it to a tech for a setup. The Dave video is pretty iconic. He's wrong about nothing. I've owned a 4003 for 17 years and no bass has ever given me so much trouble. Absolutely the biggest pain ever. I love it mostly out of Stockholm syndrome I think. Because I do love it don't get me wrong. But I would never ever buy another one. I can hardly look at the thing without getting anxiety. It's become totally unplayable over time because the bridge fell apart and I had to put a Badass I on there, which is too high and can't be lowered down enough to get good action. That combined with the neck pulling forward and the truss rods not counteracting it enough has made it more firewood than musical instrument I'm afraid. And that's just one of its many episodes. Sensible people just buy a Fender or Music Man and are happy forever.

RIC has corrected all (truss rods, tale piece/bridge, etc.) of the design and production problems you allude to. How, in this age of the internet, have you managed to be subject to so much outdated information. There are only three types of bass players likely to reply here: 1,) those who play multiple basses, primary amongst them Fenders, each only in keeping with their 'single' signature sound, in accordance with the legacy of their historic service, and may or may not want a RIC for its own 'singular' signature sound, and 2.) those who play (or want) ONLY Rickenbackers, because they sound great (are typically dialed in to sound other than Fenders), play really well (due to their shorter neck scale), look cool, and...despite being able to sound other than RICs, never undertake to explore the unique potential of this versatile bass to conjure a myriad of other tones (including, amongst them, a creditable P and J bass sound).
I am in a the third group: I use a brand new 4003 FOR EVERYTHING, having quite recently sold my Fenders. People keep asking me what I've done to my RIC to 'cause' it to sound so much like a vintage P or a J bass (because, in general, I don't set it to sound like a RIC, except on rare occasion of playing music contiguous with it for not caring for either that kind of music in general, or those RIC artists specifically), and the answer is...NOTHING! RICs have always had that ability, but RIC users are just not interested in it so it hasn't become part of the folklore. Its even more true of the new ones. I chose RIC simply because I don't want to bother with multiple instruments, or collect basses under the guise of vaunted musicianship. Its just easy to play and very versatile, where neither the P or J bass is sufficiently. Plus it can sound modern. Besides...its the only bass that can sound like a Rickenbacker. Now that's true versatility.

This is easily my most polarizing video. However, the majority of Ric owners have told me I made a wise decision to pass on the Ric featured in this video. In hindsight, I disagree. Like marriage, I feel like you have to experience certain other things for yourself. There was a bit of indecisiveness in the beginning, but ultimately, my heart desires the 4003 and I would prefer it be just like this one. Obviously, you're on "Team Ric", so I don't have to tell you why I love these basses so much without ever owning one. In several videos that followed this one, I retracted my words in this video and played other Rickenbacker basses, hoping to find another one like the one in this video. This obviously has yet to happen. Despite changing my mind, I won't delete this post because I believe it would question the integrity of this channel. Amen brother! I fell into that trap, I sold my 1st Ric like an idiot, sold my second based off of Dave's extremely biased review, But I thought it was worth paying 2,300 bucks for a New 2023 4003s, everybody has an opinion, you got to go with what you like and makes you happy.

    Better investment by far.
But I understand when guys cannot set up their stuff and have to have someone else do it....still the Ric would have been just fine.

The Hagstrom is already gone. I had a couple of issues with it that just didn't sit well with me. I discussed it with the guys at Guitar Center over the phone and they suggested that I bring it back. I asked them about 2 basses when I brought it back. A non-sterling Stingray and a Rickenbacker. I honestly believe that I'm supposed to own a Rick. One of my heroes (Cliff Burton) was the reason I even started playing bass. I love everything about the Rick: The feel, the sound and the look. I already wasted money accumulating a couple of cheap instruments, such as that 6-string for example. Combines those with the Hagstrom and I would already own a Rickenbacker by now. With that said, I fortunately returned the Viking and will sell off the 6-string to prepare me for the next move...

@@timhenderson2643 I really appreciate the offer! I may very well take you up on it. I have played a few Fender JBs over the years. Even borrowed an early 70s Jazz for several months. I think they're great! The same musician who loaned me that old Jazz Bass put 4 Fender Precision Basses in my hands, a 1968, 1983, 1967 and 1966. I decided to stick with the 1966. Once I made that decision, I had 9 electric basses. I felt like it was too many, so I parted with the other 3 P basses, as well as a pair of matching Ash Stingrays (one fretless). I wish I had kept the matching Stingrays. I haven't seen one of those ash fretless models since.

I have a walnut Rickenbacker 4003, just like the one you didn't buy.
It's turned out to be a perfect example of 'never meet your heroes'.
The build quality isn't great or even good. It shouldn't have left the factory with a fat run of glue squeezed out of the neck/wing joint on the back. It has not one but three breakages to fretboard inlays, one of which is a big crack, two of which are broken off corners that have been inexpertly not-quite-filled, so the factory clearly knew the inlay was damaged. The filler is creamy white and doesn't match the pearly inlay material, so the factory did a scruffy job. It also has scratches across the fretboard where (presumably) someone polished up the frets without even trying to protect the surface - again from new, again from the factory.
On certain notes there is some random buzzing from inside the main cavity (or it might be a truss rod). The toggle switch design is awful - under the scratch plate there are just springy contacts that the back end of the switch tries to push together - frequently resulting in scratchy/buzzy sound. I've got it apart and cleaned the contacts twice but frankly removing the scratch plate while taking massive precautions not to scratch the front of the body gets old fast.
It's well documented how awful the design of the bridge is (thought to be fair Rickenbacker have sprung into action and radically improved it after only about 40 years). My bridge came assembled with the two higher pitched strings' saddles oriented the same as the lower strings - such that it wasn't possible to set the intonation without physically taking it apart and rotating the saddles myself. Which then slightly altered the string spacing...
I find it's very susceptible to changes in humidity (maybe the satin/oil finish allows moisture to enter and leave the wood more than a very glossy lacquered finish, so to be the majority may not suffer from this). It can play great one week only to be a royal pain a week later.
When it's good, it's great - but you just never know what you're going to get. When I have a moment to play bass, I find myself picking up my half-the-price-but-twice-as-good MIM Geddy Lee Jazz bass. All I -had to do- _did_ on that was improve the pickups by fitting Fender Custom Shop 60s and it went from an already very good to a really superb bass.

It's hilarious that most people that "play"bass don't have the most basic and fundamental idea on how to adjust, tighten set up their instruments.
I know pro players that have been playing 30 plus years and all they know how to do is change the strings.lol.So cringe. Let me add they're not even good players so wtf have they been doing all this time??
You should be able to setup your instrument with no one's help including those toggle switches and all moving parts on the instrument.

It's hilarious that most people who come on here talking trash don't have any content to back it up. Sure, every musician should know how to handle the basic maintenance of the instrument they play, which I certainly know how to do. However, that doesn't mean that I know more than the guy who sets up instruments all day long.

As I mentioned, I actually passed on this particular Rick because the toggle switch was broken. If it weren't for that, I totally would've purchased that bass. By the way, I am looking for another Rickenbacker. Hopefully, the next one will be just as good as the one I fell in love with.

This is probably true. For what it's worth, I've decided to see for myself what the Ric 4003 is all about. Yes, I'm very indecisive. I'm trying to work on that. I really screwed up by not buying the one I played on this channel. I almost picked up a Fireglo 3 weeks ago and just last week, I backed out of a Jetglo. I really want the Walnut finish, so I'm holding out for that. Hopefully, I'll have get one soon.
