Faculty Recital at 8pm this Wednesday evening (9/11/13) at Jordan Hall. In this video are clips from a dress rehearsal on 9/9/13. See you soon! -Toby Oft
Toby, my family loves to listen to your clips. You are a sincere inspiration for my son who is in his 2nd year with the trombone. Listening to you gave him courage to play solo/ensemble this year. He gets bored with the very basic trombone parts in middle school band. Whenever he's bored, we pull up your clips to remind him that so much ability lies ahead. Way to be a hero!...and thanks. I think we'll email through your wife (Ben's high school pal) to ask for some recommendations to keep him interested & playing this summer. Your friends, the Seal Family
Among the great things that James Levine did during his short, illness-and-inury-plagued tenure as Music Director of the BSO, we should include the hiring of Toby Oft to be principal trombone. What a great musician. Catch the interview with him too and see the workings of his very sweet, intelligent personality and character.
Hi Alex - The pieces you are asking about are from Gesänge, Op.2 (Berg, Alban) originally for mezzo which I transcribed for the recital. Great music indeed!!
I know I'm a broken record about this, but what on Earth made a listener to this video give it a thumbs down? And don't tell me that everyone is entitled to an opinion. While that's technically true, in many cases offering opinions just puts one's ignorance on display. This is objectively wonderful, both technically and aesthetically. What's not to like? His tie?

Your son is probably a trombone god now

What are the pieces you play @ 1:30 and 1:57? Beautiful playing!
What mouthpiece do you use for alto? What do you recommend for someone just dabbling in alto?
