Let's not forget who these base model iMacs are marketed towards here. Anyone who will be stressing the crap out of these for extended periods of time will either pay the extra $200 for more beef or wait for a 27" equivalent. The average user who buys the base model won't notice a thing at all with daily use. It's like buying an M1 MacBook Air vs M1 MacBook Pro. If you REALLY need extra beef, you'll pay for it at the beginning anyway. Average users who just use it likely won't care, and are unlikely to wail on it long enough to throttle anyway. I mean, yeah, they could maybe still disclose it, but, is someone who watches UA-cam, FaceTimes their mom, and browses FaceBook or works on a document really gunna be cranking this thing to a throttle state? People who would do serious work would buy the more expensive one at that point anyway.
Aren't these machines meant for people running nothing that will push the machine as hard as these synthetic benchmarks. How do videos like this inform the target market for this machine? I' genuinely curious to know...This iMac is not meant for content creators...it is meant for college student, office workers, Store Front POS...etc, and only a small market of "pro" users should be considering this. So why does the negatives you point out in this video matter when you are obviously pushing the machine outside its intend day to day use? and making a 17 min video and only using 30 seconds to point out the avg user use is not the same.
Yes, as an advertisement perspective, it is meant for an average consumer. But c’mon! It got an M1. How many UA-camrs mentioned it is good for creators!
They don't inform the target market. I've watched a ton of videos on the new iMacs and every reviewer does its review to satisfy "himself". They all are high end tech users who do 4k and 8k photo rendering (as you can see, photo editing is their only benchmark) never number crunching in Excel or 1000 pages documents in Word. They do not understand marketing, they do not understand what the ordinary Safari, Mal and Word people do with their computer. They are completely disconnected from the reality of the rest of the world. Nice to learn that the base iMac has only one fan but one fan that will be more than sufficient for non professional workers that are the target of Apple. As if professional photographers, videographers or professional in the cinema industry will even take a look - try- at a name iMac. They are all waiting for the upcoming purposely 30 inch iMac that will be a beast. Until now, I have seen most of the reviews of the 24 inch iMac and each and everyone is made from he point of view of a videographer that produces his videos on UA-cam and needs precious clicks. Such immaturity and selfishness is all over YT. They don't help the potential buyer, they have fun between themselves cause they all say the same thing as if they had concerted.
@@hlmep1439 That makes no sense…this just doesn’t apply to advertisement but manufacturing as well. You can’t take an entry level built machine, throw this kind of workflow at it…then stand back like “see! Apple tricked us”…this is gaslighting and food for the algo. This is an entry level machine built for that purpose, this is why Apple has an entire segment of “Pro” level machines….and Yes, UA-camrs all over the net are praising the M1 for this type of work…after WWDC they will be praise the “next thing” and telling you to stay away from the M1 for these types of work loads.
@@_its.just.regi_ Not really. I don’t always care about what UA-camrs say. In a real world experiment, the M1 proved to be a very powerful processor, hands down. If you get any Mac you will get the same performance. Yes, those types of creators are looking for the best of best, which is understandable. Names don’t always mean inferiority. You can do a heavy work comfortably in MacBook PRO while also you are getting the same wow performance and speed from the “to the average consumer” 23 inches iMac. Yes, as a design and advertising way, it might seem to be targeting the average consumer, but you know? Before iPad Pro M1 release, some UA-camrs were saying that the iPad Air 4 is for around average consumer, which is totally wrong, you know why? Because the iPad Air 4 processor is almost as powerful as A12X/Z, which simply means it will handle the heavy work that on iPad Pro 2018/2020 similarly. Consider the specs more than opinions (objectivity vs subjectivity).
Hi, please guide me. I use MacBook for internet browsing, opening lots of chrome tabs and bulky pdf documents, watching videos, several MS Office apps. I don’t need Touch ID, Ethernet port or extra USB ports. I don’t do video editing or play games. Would I be fine with base model iMac? And would it work smooth for at least 5-6 years? Or should I get the 1499 model? Would I need 16 GB RAM or am I fine with 8 GB?
Legend on your graph for Lightroom export is backwards. It says Base model took 2.25 and High End took 4:20. Unless I misunderstood what you said verbally (and what logic would suggest) the High End was the one that took 2.25 with the Base taking 4:20. Or am I missing something here?
Out of curiosity, is there anyway that we can get our hands on the same images that you use export to test our own systems against the computers you test to see our how our systems compare. This would really help with purchasing decisions!
It seems that the performance difference is similar to theM1 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. I just got the iMac Base Model and it works very well. But next purchase I will postpone until Max Tech has had a chance for a detailed review/comparison/testing of the desired gadget. Thanks a lot for the professional video!
Got myself M1 Mac Mini 16gb 512gb and noticed that SSD Write speed 800-1000 MB's faster compare to my stock M1 Mac Mini 8gb 256gb, no software running, same backup state. May be this info for will help some one.
‘Course, the average user who is reading email, watching UA-cam, doing a little photo editing and Excel work isn’t going to come anywhere close to stressing out the base model.
I think for me I’m just going to get the base model. I only surf the web and do video calls. Thanks for the video it was a surprise that one model had only one fan vs two.
@@iceman62509 oh yes, very happy. Well worth the money I'd say. Also I'm sure everyone who buys this model and does what we do to use it, it will last for many years. No need to buy the new versions and onwards and/or whatever chips apple makes from now on. This one's good enough.
@@mariaturner371 only thing that may suck is if I buy the 24 inch then then the 30 inch comes out next month lol. But I think I’ll take a trip to Best Buy soon to pick this 24’ base model iMac up.
@@iceman62509 that is a problem.. apple will always come out with a better device every year that makes us want to get it. However if you train yourself to just to be in love with what you got now then you won't be spending money every year on the latest and greatest. Especially if it's working just fine I wouldn't go buying any upgraded version anymore at this point unless there's a drastic change. That's my opinion anyway.
Could you please share the tests you do with us? Then we can also do our own testing. By the way I really like your content and in depth analysis that no other channel provides!
I love your content and recommend it to anyone looking for straight up non-biased info. BUT, I do disagree with some statements in this comparison. The final statement of, “Much better, cooler, quieter performance” doesn’t add up when the comparison just showed an average difference within margin of error, (0%-10%). I don’t understand how the base model as stated in the comparison is mainly used for web browsing and light editing but the $200 more model is, “MUCH” better at pro level workflows when the difference was 0%-10%. And the one test where it was actually faster was CLEARLY anecdotal and due to the 16gb of memory. Now, I agree that most SHOULD spend the extra $200 for the other options. I also agree that those that can’t afford the upgrade or have those that have already purchased the base model shouldn’t have to feel bad about their purchase. It’s about 0%-10% - they won’t see that difference. Hell, the Mac Air and IPad Pro are totally fanless with the same CPU and they’re EXCELLENT for their price point/performance.
I am no tech expert, but I think for some of these tests such as the video exporting, they were pretty short, hence the smaller differences. But if we think about longer, and more complicated functions like running computer models for example, these small differences, could become amplified by the longer and more complex tasks. Hence, I think it might not be that much of a stretch to say that the higher end models have a much better performance than the base model. This is what I think hahaha i actually cancelled my preorder of the base model when I found out that theres only one fan because I actually needed it to run some intensive models, so this video really helped to affirm my decision HAHA 🤣
IMO youre correct with a but. The tests are a sort term impact measurement. In the real world you getting that performance reduction and higher noise generation for several years on a daily (?) basis. For $200 thats quite price to pay even on a base machine.
one tip please: which one do I need to buy for programming, Macbook air M1 16GB ram one or macbook pro M1 16GB ram?? or is 8GB okay for long run? and all programs android studio??
I am really confused, the air finished the same tests faster than the m1 imac and the aur doesn't even have a fan. But I am disappointed that apple didn't say that the base model has only 1 fan😞, apple usually tells everything.pls give a heart if u agree Max and vadim love ur content keep it up guys.
In any computer you get though, you almost never have the number of fans listed. I think it's enough to know that the lower end model has a bit lesser performance. Certainly this wouldn't matter to the average low-end iMac buyer.
As I see the export times are exactly the same. If the difference its only the temps, I don't mind, I ll go for the base model. 100 € more its enough for a thunderbold extension with usb3, display ports and ethernet. Great review, nice job. Greetings from Greece
Is this an error in the info?! At 12:04 you say that the high end one takes 2:25m and the base over 4m for rendering. In the overlay it’s the other way round. Now why I’m asking is, because other people tried it too and the base model with 8gb was often faster in rendering compared to a 16gb high end iMac m1. So which way round? Error in text or in the graphics?
The higher end model is becoming more and more appealing: Significantly better performance/better cooling 2 extra USB C Ethernet Touch ID More color options For less than 15% more money. It’s a no brainer.
Apple is an awesome company but they should have told us about the fan situation on the m1 iMac and they should not repeat this mistake again, awesome video max , hoping to see more of your comparisons
Do Black magic disks speed change over time? My M1 Mac Pro with 2TB SSD was around the same as yours and now after filling it up with 1TB of videos and music it's FASTER! 3400 write and 2700 Read. Is this normal?
It all depends on what you're gunna do with it. Unless you're gunna be doing stuff that wails on the CPU for extended durations, you probably won't be throttling on the base model. If you plan on doing footage editing and heavy duty/long duration intensive stuff, then you probably shouldn't have been considering a base model in the first place. Average users definitely won't be hitting a base iMac hard enough long enough to throttle.
I ordered the base model not knowing that it had only one fan this alone is enough for me to spend that extra 200 bucks and get the upgraded model, what should I do
@@kaizencast That's rough right there. Sorry for ya. It should still do okay, I'd imagine. Use iStat Menus to check thermals an fans, and even control fans.
Worse performance is not caused by 1x fan but rather missing real heat pipe. Add better and bigger heatsink then it will work like MBA with thermo pads
Nice work guys! Can also give an update comparison with the M1 mac mini highend model to this? I wonder how the fan and the thermal envelop works since the devices had different size and fan.
At the usual retail prices, your findings are a no brainer, but what if the base model can be had from a supplier for about $450 off its retail price and even though it will be doing video and music production at times, it will not be used to run a studio kind of work load. What would you do?

The fan issue on the base model doesn't make it less durable?
This makes me wonder if there is a difference between the middle model and the top model. I did order the top model in purple because I wanted the extra storage.
41 to 42 DB ist exactly twice as loud, because it is a logarithmical value.

would be interesting seeing the difference in energy consumption: is a stronger Mac running almost idle consuming less energy or the same as a weaker one running at full load?
Your graphs are flipped and showing the base being faster at the Light Room Editing and as well as the Stress test you have the base showing more reliable.

Are you going to do the same review for the latest M3 iMacs? Do the new models have the same differences in terms of cooling?
I heard the red iMac was the fastest one, what did your testing show ?
Wow, why does the color matter when referencing performance?
Excellent job Max
Was really waiting for this video
Max, according to your chart, 8GB base model is faster using Lightroom CC.
@@racineurr.8924 correct
The base is plenty, it's basically meant for people like you!
Thanks
Wow. Just the fan difference warrants an upgrade if you actually use your Mac intensively.
I use m1 MacBook Air base model, and didn't notice anything about settling performance
12:17 I think there has been a mistake?
Legend on your graph for Lightroom export is backwards. It says Base model took 2.25 and High End took 4:20. Unless I misunderstood what you said verbally (and what logic would suggest) the High End was the one that took 2.25 with the Base taking 4:20. Or am I missing something here?
Out of curiosity, is there anyway that we can get our hands on the same images that you use export to test our own systems against the computers you test to see our how our systems compare. This would really help with purchasing decisions!
*Is the gpu in the m1 imacs clocked higher than the m1 macbooks and mac mini?*
most likeley not, but the m1 in the imac most likeley outperforms the other m1‘s in long therm due to the better cooling
but the difference prob istn higher than a few %
actually, prob not even 1%
It seems that the performance difference is similar to theM1 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.
Do bigger ssd run faster or are they the same speed now?
Can you please provide a link for the thermal camera? Thanks.
Can you do an ultimate M1 performance comparison accross all M1 devices
Is the chart at 12:19 wrong? Is the "high-end" really two minutes SLOWER?
‘Course, the average user who is reading email, watching UA-cam, doing a little photo editing and Excel work isn’t going to come anywhere close to stressing out the base model.

How long did you wait between tests?
Once the base model was hot it takes some time to cool down which might explain the Lightroom tests.
They actually cool down surprising quickly. This video took 2.5 hours to shoot so there were plenty of time between tests.

I think for me I’m just going to get the base model. I only surf the web and do video calls. Thanks for the video it was a surprise that one model had only one fan vs two.
Hey Maria we’re you happy with your purchase ? I’m thinking about going base model as well. As I’m just a surf the internet user.
That's my opinion anyway.

what is the cpu and gpu performance app that show in the menu bar?
Do you know what the max power consumption is compared to the imac i5 or i7 ?
It's really a question of what do you plan to do with it? average users probably won't thrash the chip hard enough for long enough to throttle it.
This is the video I've been looking and waiting for! Thank you!!

@@haysoos123 yeah totally agree but I don’t mind them having only one fan but just wished that apple told that at the event.
As I see the export times are exactly the same. If the difference its only the temps, I don't mind, I ll go for the base model. 100 € more its enough for a thunderbold extension with usb3, display ports and ethernet. Great review, nice job. Greetings from Greece
At 12:20, the base model score better?
Let’s compare the same chip but only difference is one GPU core and a fan :)
Sorry just editing mistake
The higher end model is becoming more and more appealing:
Significantly better performance/better cooling
2 extra USB C
Ethernet
Touch ID
More color options
For less than 15% more money. It’s a no brainer.
Apple is an awesome company but they should have told us about the fan situation on the m1 iMac and they should not repeat this mistake again, awesome video max , hoping to see more of your comparisons

i hate apple for removing one fan from the base model. They don't even tell us on their website and in the product presentation either.
I was going to buy the base model, but this video made me change my mind for the 8 core model.
I ordered the base model not knowing that it had only one fan this alone is enough for me to spend that extra 200 bucks and get the upgraded model, what should I do
What do you plan on doing with your machine? Unless you plan on wailing on your CPU all the time, then single fan should be fine for most cases.
