As an ex-marine who had sea duty for ship security, I wish our captain would bypass storms. If people want to get sick barf and be miserable force them to dock in ports that are in storms. Be my guess, but its also safety.

It is clear to me after watching the video 2 times and after having read all the comments that something stands out. The Capt. is indeed in charge and has the absolute final word. The problem for this Capt. was that he did not know how to handle that situation. He did not articulate very well. "Lady's & Gentleman, I made my decision based on the sefety of all passengers. The Capt, evaluates & makes all decisions. I am sorry if you feel that is was the wrong decision" (the Capt. then exits) !

Bill B I don't think it would really matter how he explained it. On our numerous travels ( more so now than 10-20 yrs ago) people seem to go out of their way to complain cause a scene; for compensation/freebies to brag on later.. to be noticed or just plain horrible ppl.

worked two years on this company and dealing with passengers who don't care about the safety onboard and when the ship skips a port due to this kind of reason first thing they do is ask for bloody compensations... no matter what you explain to them they would never understand... just relax and enjoy your vacation and be glad to be on a cruise...

Being on this cruise, the behavior of some was laughable. Some people created such a storm over a situation where a decision was made in the interest of public safety. The only criticism that I have is that the ship authorities were a little slow in providing information on decisions made. Our group and many others still had a fantastic time and just accepted that mother nature can throw up unexpected eventualities. Still talking about the experience.

I'm glad the Captain puts safety first. This is like airline passengers go all mad when a flight is cancelled due to weather and safety reasons. I remembered there's a case in Taiwan when a Taiwanese airline crashed because the pilot chose to try to land in poor weather, and the very next day the same airline cancelled the same flight due to poor weather, guess what all the pax did? They went on a riot at the airport and disrupt the airline desk and demand they take off! Are you kidding me?!?!?!

he did everything right, he didnt ignore them, but he wanted the other passangers to have a nice cruise. he has the responsibility for the ship and all people onboard, he makes the decisions, and he certainly knows more about the sea than the passangers. also, on the cruises i did with RCCL, they always told you beforehand that they have no influence on the weather and that it might happen that they have to change ports.

I've worked on cruise ships for NCL, NYK and Saga cruise lines for over 9 yrs and I have seen a similar situation on a Hawaiian cruise for NCL. We missed 3 ports due to bad weather. So bad that the ports themselves closed, which means we couldn't dock even if the Captain wanted to. But the pax decided to have a petition, sign it, and then bring it to the Captain. I never understand what pax want the Captains/cruise line to do in situations like this, especially if they were compensated. lame

  • @homeric9
    @homeric9 15 років тому +2

It isn't why the decision was made it is how it was applied to the passengers. The captain has every right to make the decision to skip ports, but he agitated an already upset group of passengers by the way he spoke to them. A totally ineffective way of dealing with this situation, a bad situation was made much worse just by the Caprain talking so heavy handedly.

Perfect example of the Carnival Empire's hiring capabilities. If the guy would had communicated with the passengers and maybe give them perks because they missed ports crap like this wouldn't happen. Other examples of this company's crappy crew include but are not limited to Micky Arison(Executive), Francesco Schettino (Concordia Captain), the Engineering team and mechanics on multiple ships (Splendor, Alerga, Dream), and many more that people didn't mention.

    • @OasisAllure2010

Avera Hunter Carnival Splendor, Costa Concordia, Costa Allegra, Carnival Triumph and Carnival dream all had problems caused by somebody whether it be the captain, engineer, or designer it was somebodies fault. 100% competency doesn't exist within any company. If that were true the Concordia wouldn't have ran aground and capsized. As for slander I didn't start an aggressive TV and internet campaign against them nor am I in a position like a former employer or colleague who spoke out against them. So your slander argument is void. No judge is going to allow a lawsuit of a company suing some random guy on the internet who voices negative opinions about them.

Joseph Pacheco Absolutely well said. In all honesty this is what is staggering, that you see people acting so childish because they didn't get their way. Sure it is disappointing you missed a port of call, or multiple but the reality is that people should also feel thankful. Because the only reason they cancel the port of call is with everyone's safety in mind. Having a strong understanding of the industry for various reasons, and knowing ships i can tell at the moment this is recorded they are not in extremely rough seas. Yet people are complaining. But by the same token had the captain have elected to proceed and they ended up in extremely rough seas these people would also be complaining. Because the captain is trying to give them what they want, so they can't win. It seems everyone here has no clue just how dangerous is can be and i would love to see them at the helm so they can show how it is done.

What was the reason 4 ports were cancelled? Even if the circumstances were beyond the Captain's control, maybe weather related? Assuming everyobe was behaving at this point the captian's "my word is rule" approach did not help matters at all. Addressing one's guests in such a manner is fanning the flames. Interesting at the very begining of the video 2 Princess employees seem to be pointing up at the camera man too. A bad way to work an angry crowd.

Unfortunatly Carnival Cruise Lines (Princess Cruises' parent) has a history of deception in situations like this. Remebert he QM2 near mutiny? Carnival/Cunard knew long before the QM2 departed Ft. Lauderdale there were going to have to be port eliminations and due to penalties Carnival would have had to pay to allow passengers to disembark the same day the embarked, rolled the dice on lieing to passengers. It backfired miserably and many passengers recieved a total refund on their trip.

I worked on cruise ships for 25 years ...many on Princess.
I heard a passenger in this video talking some shit about being democratic ..life aboard ship is NOT A DEMOCRACY. Like or despise him or her (there are female captains and deck & engine officers now) the captain has the last word on EVERYTHING. Cruise ship passengers who behave like this most likely are not experienced shippies and are under the illusion they are in a hotel that happens to be floating. NOT!! ...they are sailing under MARITIME LAW which is for the most part autonomous from civic and federal laws which take effect when a ship is in port, in which case whatever country it is has the right to enforce their laws on the ship although this is seldom done in countries whose regulations would be considered repressive by Western values. But they "DO" have that right and of course when you are in their country are subject to whatever the legal conditions there which dictate how one deports oneself.
On a crossing from Europe to Puerto Rico we had to divert to Barbados to avoid Hurricane Hugo which had already devastated the port. ...this was on Radisson Diamond ... In the case of Hurricane Hugo this would give us an extra day or two at sea ...very good for people who let the cruise line handle air travel as part of the cruise ...if you made your own arrangements naturally -changing your flight details was also your responsibility.... there were passengers old and not so old loudly ranting and raving without ....I witnessed more than one grab a drinks server and start shaking them and demanding we sail into the hurricane ....LoL ...did the REALLY think their plane would take off.
I am a concert pianist/entertainer ....all the entertainment department did extra performance ...i.e. I worked DURING THE DAY!! all drinks were complimentary ...which wasn't SUCH a big deal because on many of Radisson's ships (now Regent Seven Seas) most drinks are without charge -for sure during meals.
We had a motivational speaker on board as a guest lecturer she used a lot of comedy ...much like Loretta LaRoche ...I forget her name ....anyway ....the unbridled rage from a small group of passengers (the max capacity was 350) began spreading with such fury that an announcement was made on the ship's PA that this guest lecturer would be giving an extra talk that afternoon on ANGER MANAGEMENT. LoL ...it worked!!
If you've never worked on a ship you may not realize that those hackneyed cruise ship jokes have basis in fact and demonstrates what a rare commodity common sense becomes once they embark.
    Questions from Passengers:
Which way does this stairway go?
Does the crew sleep on board?
What do you do with the ice sculpture once it melts?
How do I get out of my room ...there's only the bathroom door and one other which says Do Not Disturb!
Does this elevator go to the front of the ship?
Does the water in pool move so much because it's sea water?
WHY DID IT COST ME SO MUCH FOR A VIEW OF THE PARKING LOT -the ship was still in port ...THRUTH!! hahaha
What all d'ya get in a bacon and tomato sandwich?
    Does this elevator go up?
Those are A FEW .... passengers frequently will have you explaining something for 5 or 10 minutes ..thank you ...and go right over to another staff member and ask it all over again ...like they didn't trust you gave them the truth ....who knows eh? I'LL SHUT UP NOW xoxo :)

I really enjoyed reading and appreciate what you wrote above.
Indeed, I was waiting for someone to correctly point out that a ship's captain is somewhat of a "benevolent dictator". A good captain -- as this one appears to be -- will focus on his passengers' SAFETY. Hard to believe there are such dumbed-down supposed adults who would throw tantrums because of the captain's safety-oriented decision to skip some ports of call.

I don’t know if you’re English but I would like to point out that one of my favorite movies is the 1980s “Bounty” starring Mel Gibbon and Anthony Hopkins. A remake of “Mutiny on the Bounty,” it provided a more balanced and insightful portrayal of Captain Bligh than previous film portrayals which made a cruel, mean-spirited tyrant of him. In retrospect, he was one of the great ship captains of all time and led his surviving officers on a stunning survival voyage that’s an enthralling story in itself.

I'd be pissed but no one can control the weather. If Captain put people's lives in danger or someone died, then they'd want to hang him. It is what it is and he announced it was a safety issue. DONE!

Giant floating petri dishes!! Book a private yacht with 10 of your closest friends, we did this in the BV I"s!! Had a gourmet chef, too. We got to stop and snorkel and dive whenever we wanted, got to set anchor any pretty place we desired and , since we were smaller, we got to go ashore on cool SMALL local islands with great little uncrowded bars and stores!! A Way to be a LOCAL and not come numbered cattle on a huge Ship!! It is not even that costly and it is TRUE sailing/boating!!

    • @missdee7243
      @missdee7243 7 років тому

Rott Spünkeln that is probably the problem, they don't accommodate the guests. I have been on Princess Grand S.F. To Hawaii (15 day cruise) and I swear they didn't have much for the guests to do and actually shut down early or never opened things that were suppose to be available. We cruised 3 other times with Carnival and Royal Caribbean. I, and my family, were wrong in choosing Princess and should have done much much much more research on the type of people they cater to. Princess is meant for 65+ year olds that want to lounge and go to bed early. The youngest we had was 17 years old and one other teen was board. The rest of us (12 of us)were 20-38 years old and 2 50's and we had to buy board and card games to entertain ourselves and make our own events. I can only imagine on how it would have been if we didn't hit our ports. (It was a legit reason on why THEY did but they should have had a plan B on trying to entertain the guests.)
