I like the origin from Young Justice. He was severely wounded and Meegan gave him a blood transfusion. Since his mom was a vet and they lived and worked with animals he gained the ability to change into them.
Exitinct animals are easy for Gar, as they are natural and realistic. But Turning into a mythical creature is hard for him. Mostly because it's combining different animals together. However, during the New Teen titans storyline "The Brotherhood of Evil Returns", Gar takes center stage, especially near the end of the comic, when He attacks madame rouge in a rage, and she, a shapeshifter herself exclaims "Help! He's gone mad! He's turning into animals that don't even exist!"

Hey Arris, wasn't Garfield referred to as "Changeling" in the comics for most of the 1980's? Why the change to beast boy? Maybe copyright issues with the movie Changeling? It seems that part of his history has disappeared...maybe a result of Crisis on infinite Earths in 1985?
I had forgotten that he started with that name. In the original comic with the doom patrol he had the most awful costume. I thought it was dumb looking then and I was just old enough to read comics. I think my brother still has that one around somewhere but not in any collectable shape. I always did like Gar for the shape changing power though.

If I were writing a Beast Boy' series, there are two things I'd add to his backstory: 1) I'd make it clear that he was indeed as old as the rest of the Doom Patrol, and is still a kid because he was in suspended animation for a good long time at some point (probably held captive by the Brotherhood for study). 2) I'd make it just a little bit clearer (although still not quite explicit) just what that disease endemic to African green monkeys and fatal to humans that he contracted is (hint: it was unknown in 1965, but is tragically widespread among humans these days).
