  • This is a video of an unboxing, disassembly/motor removal, installation, reassembly of a Minnkota Deckhand 40 electric anchor winch. The install instructions that came with it are garbage, so I made a tutorial video.
    This winch was installed on the front of a pontoon boat. This particular installation has the davit connected to the main housing frame of the Deckhand 40, but this tutorial should be helpful for anybody who needs assistance with removing the motor assembly from the enclosure to make room for the mounting bolts
    Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

    You don't have to remove the motor and stuff to bolt up. All you have to do is get a paint marker and mark where the holes line up. Then you get a smaller drill bit and drill, then move up to a bigger drill bit. Once you drill the holes the hole underneath the motor will just clear. The other way to do it, is to get a piece of paper and then mark the holes and just drill the hole with the paper as a template. You don't need to take the whole thing out. I bought a bracket for my Tritoon and it works well. Installation took about 2 hours total with 2 guys.

    9:08 I think the rubber watchers are for under your boat to protect the wood. At least on a trolling motor, I use the rubber washers so that when the trolling motor turns left or right the rubber is what squeezes really hard against the wood. Otherwise the washer will chew into the wood over time. So those rubber washers the way I understand should go underneath the boat in your case.

    Hi Nate, thanks for the great video. I am curious to know more about the mushroom anchor in the other installation. Where did you get it, and is it 20lb? Mine is 20lbs but the shaft diameter is so big that when I have it pulled out from the water and into the davit, the vinyl covering the shaft gets it stuck inside the david hole.

    Would it be possible to drill new holes instead of totally disassembling the unit to use the factory holes in the base?

    • @nated2951
      @nated2951  5 місяців тому +1

      Perhaps that would be possible, but I don’t know how it would work. You would still need something inside the base for the bolts to screw into. I suppose you could try drilling some holes and try to thread them, but you would have to make sure you didn’t drill into something vital. In the end, I think it would be more work than just taking it apart. Let me know if you come up with a different solution.

      @nated2951  4 роки тому

      lambs I’m glad the video was helpful to you. I generally make my videos when I can’t find one that gives me the answers I need.
      To answer your question - In theory you could try to use shorter bolts and run the bolt up from under the boat deck, with the nut under the motor, but you might need to use shorter bolts, and getting to the nut under the motor would also be a hassle.
      I would highly recommend you just take the motor out and install it the right way. This will give you peace of mind and confidence if you run into issues later on because you will know how to take it out and address the issue.
      If an idiot like me can do this, anybody can. All you need is a little curiosity, courage and confidence. Good luck!

      Cain, that would probably work. I just didn’t like the idea of the threaded end of the bolts and nuts taking up more room inside the enclosure. I figured I have more room outside the enclosure, so that’s why I did it this way. Your approach would likely work as well. 👍

    Is the deckhand free spooling on down

    • @nated2951
      @nated2951  2 роки тому

      Larry Lazure, the answer is “Sort of”. The down button when pressed all the way in will drop the anchor until it no longer senses a certain amount of weight on the line. Then it stops the spool again until it feels that weight again. This stops the spool from just over spinning like a bait caster. It’s not exactly a “free fall”, but you only have to hit the button , and not hold it, to get the anchor to the bottom. I probably did a poor job of explaining it. Let me know I f you need clarification.

      @@nated2951 Hi Nate, thanks for your quick response. When I push the buttom "down" nothing happens, no sound at all...I was trying to pull out the yellow rope by hand but still no success. Could it be the "green part" inside the motor responsible for this? Thanks for your help.

    • @nated2951
      @nated2951  4 роки тому

      Marcin Bielsky I would double check your wires. Maybe disconnect and reconnect them. As far as pulling the rope out, I am not surprised it won’t move. That little white cube box - next to the spring - has a pressure sensitive switch. My understanding is it won’t release line unless the switch is in the down position and the little hidden button is engaged on the switch - meaning you have to have at lease 20 pounds of pressure pulling on it. I had my motor pull my line in too tight one time, and I had to manually release the line by putting the switch into the down position and pushing the spool forward on the right hand side. There is also another UA-cam video where a guy is doing a repair. Just search for “Minn Kota deckhand dh 40 repair troubleshooting”. It is entirely possible a component on your logic board has gone bad. I hope this helps a little. Let me know if you have any more questions. I will do whatever I can for you.

    • @nated2951
      @nated2951  Рік тому

      Mister b, it has been a couple of years, but I don’t think the mounting bolts were inside the casing when it arrived. You have to open it up to install the bolts. The bolts won’t fit with the motor in the way. If you try to install the bolts from underneath, they will push into the motor and won’t be able to be tightened.
      I honestly like the cardboard idea, but in this case, I can’t see how it would have worked.

    • @nated2951
      @nated2951  4 роки тому

      olhippie1 I would say that the real problem here is a lack of documentation. I have taken this apart a couple of times since, and now that I know how to do it, it’s really not difficult. The problem is, there was no documentation from Minnkota to even help get a person pointed in the right direction.
      I will say that I installed this last year, and I have absolutely loved it. It was certainly worth the initial hassle.

      Dom, I have never really found it to be noisy in practice outside. While using it, you can tell a bit about what’s happening just by the sounds. For example - you can tell when the anchor is all the way down. You can tell when it’s giving more line. You can tell when the line is coming up with no problem, you can tell when the line is almost all the way up (when you hear the chain), and you can tell when it’s all the way up. Overall, I would say the noise is significantly less than having a conversation with somebody else on the boat. I hope this helps!
