Magnetic USB Power Strips - Harbor Freight vs. Lowes

- A look at the Kobalt (Lowe's) and US General (Harbor Freight) magnetic USB power strips. These are both about $25 and are intended for workshop use with 14 AWG cords. The Koblat one appears to be a rebranded Waterloo power strip, which can be found on a variety of tool boxes made by Waterloo under other brand names, e.g. CAT.

The extra light on the US General strip is a ground indicator. It lights up when plugged into a grounded circuit.
When it's not lit, you know the outlet is not grounded.
Power switch on the Harbor Freight works fine in the Summer but for some reason won't stay latched to the "on" position in the Winter in an unheated garage.
Harbor freight looks orange good reviews
pretty sure the spaced outlet is not for a genny it is for wall worts or the kind of transformers that plug directly into the wall. they interfere with closely spaced outlets.
the HF at least feels like you are getting some value. the Kobalt is literally a plain $10 strip that they put a "magnetic" bracket on and ask 15 bucks more. yeah you could say the HF just has magnets glued on the back, but they didn't hobble pieces together like the Kobalt.
Waterloo was bought by Stanley black and decker several years ago
Brother, thanks for that “service announcement” - MAN, that is great to know! Keep this puppy far away from those computer devices. Thanks again, dog! 🇺🇸
You could have a thousand outlets and it wouldn't matter, the outlet the strip is plugged into is probably only rated to 15/20 amps. There is only so much you can plug into the strip
Why are there no magnetic power strips made with a flat plug?
I know, that is a great question!
U still have both of these?
On my Harbor Freight power strip, the secondary small LED only lights up if the wall outlet you have plugged into is grounded properly. Not sure if it was designed that way or just wired that way by chance.
Mundy Mulligan probably designed that way, I own a power strip that does the same thing for my residential use
I noticed in the back you have the Gladiator power strip. How is it and have you had any issues? I have heard a lot complain about the power cord exiting out the back vs the side.
I have one on order for my Husky 8’ workbench that’s coming but wondering if I really need it at $219 vs HF 12 outlet 4’ power strip for $19.99
I’ve been looking at the harbor freight strip. A lot of the negative reviews mention the flimsy, cheap power button not working very well. I haven’t had a chance to look at the kobalt in person yet.
So far I have not had any problems with the switch on the Harbor Freight one, but the Kobalt/Waterloo has a much more positive feeling switch.
How long is it? Dimensions?
The cord keeper on the hf will hold the power strip on the side of a service cart between the legs just put it in at an angle makes so you dont have drill holes or rely on the magnets
Just another reason I think a lot of Cobalt tools are over rated especially mechanic hand tools. US General visually looked solid, metal and utilitarian compared to that other plastic strip with fancy magnets
Great Review. Thanks Brother and Cheers!
Hold on, the kobalt strip didn't come with power specifications? That isn't legal in the us
You would "tip your cap" to salute someone. To tip your hand is to show your cards. 🤓
where's the destruction test? not a test until you try and cut down a sapling with it.
Outlets too close together on HF especially. Plenty of space, just laid out poorly.
How can they be too close together on the HF especially, when they’re clearly farther apart than on the Kobalt?
If you need to plug 5 transformer adapters into one power strip then you probably need to be looking at a different form factor altogether, or buy some short power cord leads.
These are good examples for add on power that will meet the needs of 80-90% of consumers.
Not everyone needs or wants to pay for more versatility just to tailor the product to the other 10% of the market.
is he trying to prove the Earth is round with that nauseating fish eye lens?
The hf is great...actually looks, and, feel of quality
Lowes one is cheap plastic just melt when gets hot.. junk us general all the way
