  • The process of changing a motorcycle tire can be a hassle. Hard sidewall tires, stiff tires, and spoked wheels - these are the keywords for a headache for many. However, it doesn’t have to be this way: using the right tools, you can change any tire on any motorcycle, regardless of how stubborn the tire may be.
    In the video tutorial, we’re sharing our experience and tips on how to change a rear tire on a Harley Davidson Electra Glide. Step by step, we break the process down into easy parts, and before you know it, your bike’s got new shoes.

    I very much enjoy how this isn't edited. It feels more relateable since I would also totally forget to pull the valve stem before trying to break the bead. lol. Just ordered one of these.

    When the old tire is removed, it's a great time to clean the tire contact area of the rim to insure a good seal, and soap it up.

    Good job. I wouldn't mind seeing you change a tire on a spoked Harley wheel. That's what I have on my 2003 Heritage Softail.

    Looked like older more flexible sidewalls. I used to change tyres by hand . Not a chance now with the stiff modern tyres .

      I was also amazed how easily the tire came off. I was preparing myself for a battle but the secret for a smooth tire change is "warm up the tires". We held this tire overnight in a heated room, next to a heater. Also, use plenty of soapy water on both the rim and the duck head when working with the duck head system. It will work so much easier when they're not dry. Hope it helps.

    The most difficult harley tire is sitting right behind you. I want to see you change the 180/65-16 off of the Ultra Limited.

      We went to AIMExpo 2023, held in Las Vegas this year. For a while now we've been asked to show a video of us changing the Ultra Limited tire, the ultimate Ultimate test. We are also looking for the challenge, and found ourselves a demo tire for the expo - yes, you guessed it, it was the tire from the Ultra Limited, the Dunlop D408F. It had been on for 9 years and had 13K miles on it. Keep your eye on our channel, as we'll post it very soon.

      @Rabaconda looking forward to it. I have a small side hustle in the summer changing motorcycle tires. I do them by hand with a cheap bead breaker and tire spoons. Most tires are easy enough, but the big touring bikes are impossible to remove the tires by hand. I have to pull the bead over the rim with a spacer between the bead and the wheel and use a sawzall to cut a slit in the bead in order to get the tires off. Getting the new tires on is difficult but doable and I haven't ruined a new bead yet. If you can prove your machine is up to the test, I'd gladly spend the money for it once business picks up.

      All parts that come into contact are covered in plastic to help prevent rim damage, but even then, we cannot guarantee anything as it depends too much on the operator and not on the tool itself. If you follow the instructions and take it slow, and maybe even practice on an older wheel before working with the new custom wheels, you should be able to learn the proper technique and change your tires without harming them. We are always ready to help and assist with questions or struggles.

    I have the original Rabaconda (1 year old) that I used on my ktm790 tyres, and my wife's Tiger 900. Do you think this version of your tyre changing machine would be better for changing the tyres on those bikes? We sometime have a big problem breaking the bead.

    • @Rabaconda
      @Rabaconda  Рік тому

      I have both tire changers at home, but gravitate more to the Street version when changing tires on 790 Adventure. I used to have front with air tube and rear tubeless. As long as you don’t use bib mousses or rim locks, Street version is better in my opinion

    Surely they could add another strut to allow the breaker to stand the wheel vertices ,to allow it to be static balanced too.

    • @Rabaconda
      @Rabaconda  3 місяці тому

      We had this idea during the design phase. It didn't turn out to be as easy as it seems, but the main reason was that it's more convenient to balance on a workbench or wall, so that you can stand up, but the tire changer doesn't fit on the table, and it's not comfortable to balance while squatting on the floor.

    for a solid wheel on a Harley, could you use the brake rotor to lock in place by using the strap through one of the holes?

      To be honest we have not tried. Might work, might be not enough leverage

      That just may work! I might give that a try as I'm getting ready to change out the rear tire on my 88 Softail Custom. I think I would wrap a strap through the rotor and then under the long footing of the rabaconda changer for better leverage.

      The first tire I used my Rabaconda tire changer was on a co-workers HD Fat Boy. The supplied strap was the only way that I could keep the tire from rotating and it worked perfectly. The holes through the center of the Fat Boy wheel are not big enough for the retainer pin to go through and I don't think it would have lined up with the hole in the tire changer leg anyway. I'm very pleased with how easily the machine worked to dismount and mount the tires.
