  • Mom took me on my first ferris wheel ride when I was a child so it's fitting that I got take her on her last. From this video most people wouldn't be able to recognize that mom had started slipping into her decade long battle with Alzheimer's disease. The only sign you see here is when she pauses mid sentence trying to find the words to finish it. Mom was always deliberate with her words and never stammered. There were several instances though on this day that left some people baffled about her behavior. Once they saw me doting over her they would understand and always give me a smile and even pull on my sleeve and whisper "you're doing a great job" into my ear. Those little moments from strangers gave me the boost of courage that I needed to get through this journey. So please never hesitate to approach someone that appears to be a caregiver for someone like this because it might be the only kind word they have heard in awhile.
There is so much adventure left in the lives of someone with dementia so please don't abandon them. Take them on adventures and help them find a way to enjoy their "second childhood". Just Remember that now you're the adult and responsible for their well being. You're going to have a lot of things to remember so try to think ahead. Take photos of what they are wearing that day in case you happen to get separated. Always have a medical alert bracelet or necklace on them with their name and your contact information.

Always the goal! 😉 I wasn’t always successful but that was the goal. I remember taking her to the drum circle over in Asheville one Friday so she could dance and have fun. Even though I was right beside her she darted off through the crowd and took off down the street like a little kid. I chased behind her and she stopped, turned around with such a fearful look on her face that it broke my heart. She was so lost and scared like a little girl. It wasn’t always easy but we made the best out of things.
