Great & entertaining video. From what l've heard, it sounds typical of the administrative system in Portugal. Glad you got sorted in the end & hope you're now enjoying Portugal in your motorhome
Muito obrigada! I'm planning to comeback to Portugal (from UK) and want to buy a car here as it's much more cheaper. I needed this video for some info. Thank you very much indeed! 🙏🏻
Fantastic video, very informative.I have decided to buy in Portugal I don't actually own a car so I think it makes sense to just buy one when i get there. Thanks for all the information. :)
Thank you for this video, it's been hard to find accurate information online! Now we have an idea of the paperwork ahead 😲 Unfortunately with damn Brexit now Brits only have 90 days (instead of 6 months) before completed registration to use vehicle... 😥 going to be a challenge for sure!
Wow what a process 😳 Now I understand why all these companies are popping up that offer services like every thing you did to expats . So basically a lawyer to package and stamp everything. Do you think one of these companies would have saved you frustration, time, and money or just a part or wasted more money?
Wow thank you for putting this together. This is exactly what I need to do. I also have a motorhome that I want to register in Portugal. Do you know if I need to be a resident of Portugal to register a car here? And what is the name of some of those companies that do this paperwork for us? Sounds like something I'd definitely need, not speaking Portuguese and really disliking paperwork.
Fantastic video. As a Portuguese Canadian living in Portugal we too are struggling with with the buracracy. You mentioned there are companies dedicated to importing vehicles. Can you recommend one?
To be honest I don't know any company that does it at national level, it may exist but I never came across one. As far as I know it's usually local businesses that handle this process so I suppose you would have to search around your area.
Thank you so very much for your detailed and informative video. Would it be possible for you to share the names of some of the transport companies which handle the entire registration process in Portugal, please? I have heard horror stories about exporting cars to Portugal and would rather deal with a reputable and capable company that can legally deal with the process. All the best from 🇨🇦
Sorry I missed this message, to be honest because we didn't use any company I cannot recommend any of them and I don't think there's large companies that work at a national level doing this, it's mostly small businesses local to an area, so you would have to search around your local area to find one.
No worries my friend. Thank you again for getting back to me. To be honest, dealing with all the apparent bureaucracy in Portugal is quite overwhelming for a non-native who doesn't speak the language but despite it all, I would still love to visit and possibly arrange for a life-changing move to your beautiful country. Have a wonderful day and all the best. @@umacasaverde1956
Thank you for sharing your experience. If I could have a question, how did you prove that you are the owner of the car for more than 6 months? I mean, the V5C logbook does not prove ownership, only the registered keeper.
The V5C should be accepted, at least nobody raised any concerns with that in particular. We also used insurance docs from previous years, and purchase documents (if you have them) should be fine as well. But yeah, technically none of that proves ownership :)
What the expats don't know about the Law, is that they have to pay at the end of the year thousands of Eur to the Portuguese State for each house they owned in Portugal. Most of the imigrants don't have this type of fee on their countries, but Portugal have it. So tink twice before buying a house in Portugal
Can you tell me if they now treat your motorhome as new for annual tax reasons? So you now pay the high annual tax rather than a tax for the real age of the vehicle, if so how much per year, Thanks
We have done this process in France and I thought it was a pain, But 2 months later it was all done, all on line, all at one place, Much much better and zero import tax too. I think I had it better than you by a long way ;-)
That was one of the only good things during the process, until 2018/2019 it would be taxed as a new car so super expensive based on the engine and emissions. That was considered illegal by the EU and it has now changed, we got the registration just a few months after the change so our IUC (car tax) applies based on the original year of construction. In our case it's just over 50€ a year.
@@umacasaverde1956 We did our car at the same time and because we had a French Coc it was done in 3 weeks, The only reason it took 2 months with the motorhome was the fact it had a Coc in Italian and it had one line that was faded due to its age (18 years), But we gave them a new one and told them that an Italian Coc was all that we could get as that was where it was manufactured, They then excepted it and it was done the following week.
Total cost for the van was 237 Euro local tax, 80 Euro CT (MOT), 33 euro for the local garage to send the forms in (They have a direct link to the licensing office), The lights were ok as I had originally imported it to the Uk from Belgium, so had to just adjust the headlights to the right. For the car we had to buy new headlights sadly, But I fitted them, plus changing the rear fog light, but it was a case of fitting a bulb on that side. Thanks for the info btw. See you on the road :-)

I would do the same if I was on that situation again. Just too much of an hassle to get through all of it.
Fantastic project! Congratulations!
Thanks 😊

Glad to be helpful. Maybe now there won't be such long waiting times because not a lot of people are coming and going inside the country!

What are you talking about. Don't listen to this comment. I am a real estate agent and expat here. I own a property and this is not true.
It’s better to hire company for paper work they are doing this things in 1 month
I would of lost it and and moved back to the USA.
Haha, believe me that has crossed my mind!

2 months would have been a walk in the park here :)

Typical what a nightmare..
Unfortunately that's true!
