  • Tom O'Connor presents the music-based quiz. The kind of game show that likes to show you everything within the opening moments, like trademark neon titles, massive prize curtains hiding a Talbot Samba, some girls and a live band with grinning conductor. And of course a hypnotizing spinning prize wheel! Challenge featurette has Tom O'Connor recounting its history.

RIP Tom O'Connor, a great showman from Bootle and a TV presenter and comedian who made folk laugh by just being himself and not resorting to bad language or arrogance just to get the laughs.

Benny Hill did a funny sketch of the show I remember him spinning the wheel and it fell off! I loved the music and the double shouting when the wheel went round

My god, what a blast from the past! it looks a million years old now! It's also reassuring to know that Maggie Moon wasn't a figment of my imagination!

I can remember as a nipper finding the memory roulette wheel spinning had a really eery jingle. Brilliant when hosted by Tom O` Connor, but spoilt when Lionel Blair.

I remember watching this in the 80's. i just watched this clip & found myself shouting out "double" along with the audience. I wish there were full episodes to watch

Why did Challenge only ever show 2 episodes of this, only 2 episodes of Sale of the century and 2 episodes of Winner Takes All? No Family Fortunes from 1980 in the days pre spot prizes. The archives must be somewhere.
There must be a lot more for Chsllenge to show.

It was "double" "double" "double" as it came around 3 times during a spin.

Challenge not putting runs of whole series of Name That Tune with Tom O'Connor is truly shocking.

I saw this video after seeing Benny Hill's spoof! Here, Tom O' Connor is quite good, especially when he says, "Name...THAT tune."

Even today, I find myself saying 'I'll name that tune in ... one!'
Tom O'Connor was great at compering this programme... Lionel Blair, who replaced him later on, was a dead loss!

At that time Tom O Connor was also the host of Gambit.

    • @dvidclapperton
      @dvidclapperton 7 років тому +2

@Allen Jeremy. I recall Fred Dinenage being the host of Gambit, but can't remember seeing Tom O'Connor presenting it.
I do recall Tom presenting The Zodiac Game, which was an Anglia show
The thing I recall about both Sale of The Century and Gambit (also Anglia shows) was John Benson doing the voiceovers and Peter Fenn playing his cinema organ.

David Clapperton Tom replaced Fred as the host of Gambit in 1983.

Michael Daley Was that as part of "London Night Out"?
You'd have to get in touch with FremantleMedia, they hold the Thames archive.

In 1978 it would definitely hsve been part of London Night Out.

Can't Challenge show it all, even the London Night out series if Freemantle still have all the archives. Freemantle can't surly chsrge an amount that Challenge csn't afford.
Why haven't Challenge ever showed the Central Television produced New Faces with Marti Caine or Bob says Opportunity knocks where you had to phone an 0898 number to choose your favourite act at the end of every show.

I was on in 1976 when it was part of 'Wednesday At Eight' and unlike you - I never want to see the tape again! I was in touch with Tom a few years back and he said the tapes had been junked.

  • @sdaonline

@ukgoldfan I can't remember much about it. I didn't tape it all, It probably ran for a week or two and started in the evening with 2 or 3 cult shows shown. I think this show was the first thing they started with. Quite soon after the season, they started showing Knightmare in full (and Gamesmaster S1) which I duly recorded!

Most of what I upload I have the full episode, but I won't be uploading any whole episodes due to time and copyright etc. I taped most of the cult selection, there's still more bits to come!
