The HDR grading of BR 2049 is really lackluster. But since it's the work of Deakins, who is well known for disliking HDR, hence no surprise. They chose to process the HDR version in a similar pass to the SDR counterpart, so the peak brightness of this one barely exceeds 200 nits. I personally enjoyed watching it with X-tended Dynamic Range on Bravia TVs, which is a feature I don't usually use.

The sound blew me away. I have a 7.2 klipsch system with onkyo reciver.. and holy shit. Unbelievable sound. Your spot on when you said opening scene is great to demo your theater. It's my new goto disk to show off man cave.
@timowthie my bluray player says dolby true HD 7.2.2 but my reciever says atmos. It says that with all atmos disks. And my player says it supports atmos. But only time my reciever says atmos is when I'm playing an atmos disk. I'm assuming dolby true HD 7.2.2 is my players way of saying atmos.

I always thought the specular highlights didn't pop in this as well as in the original on 4K and now people are actually analyzing the HDR on it with proper diagnostic equipment this has been confirmed. This disc isn't more of the same coming from OG Blade Runner. Blade Runner has actual HDR, this has faux HDR aka HDRn't with a peak brightness of only 200 nits. Check out the HDTVTest video on it, very interesting and worth checking out for anyone coming to this in 2020.

It cost big money to go 4K ultra and home theater Dolby sound (if they had it)! The best part of seeing this movie at an IMAX theater is we got full visual (better than 4K ultra at a distance) and the sound rock of the movie theater seats (including music scores too)! Most people are happy with their tablets seeing bootleg copies (don't pay much for small grainy quality)! Problem I have is "Blade Runner director's cut not final cut (original movie)" is in my DVD collection, so the $15.96+ tax (maybe $17?) cost to just see a pretty good enough watch for me and my friends is good enough as I don't spend good money on visuals and sound systems that still fail to capture IMAX quality and amusement park experience!!
Lawrence Jelsma I know this was 10 months ago, but maybe by now you have gotten a 4K display and Atmos sound system. But probably NOT! You are really missing a real home visual and sound experience. Why watch a 4K Blu-ray review if you are going to settle for a out of date DVD?

Hi Shane, please could you answer something that is bothering me?? I have just watched the blu-Ray version of this film as I have not made the move to 4K yet. I can display the bit rate for picture / sound and was amazed that the mp4 picture spiked at an impressive 35 mbps but on a film that has master audio with a potential of 25 mbps was mainly showing just over 3 mbps. The film looks and sounds great but I don’t understand why the sound bit rate isn’t utilised?? Could you please explain what’s going on?? Thanks.
Ok, so I just bought the 4K disc. Atmos sound was amazing and found the picture to be decent enough but as for HDR, pretty much none existant. I compare everything to Altered carbons HDR so this was very disappointing in regards to HDR 😒
If i can only pick up one right now. Which would you recommend for a 4k hdr demo disk( i dont have surround sound yet). Dunkirk or blade runner 2049. (I eventually will pick up both)
If you want a full breath taking visual experience BL2049. Dunkirk is good visually but it's really about sound design as most war movies tend to have master in... Yet again Blade Runner has awesome sound design as well...
I loved the film...best of 2017. As for the visuals, I found it played a lesser role to the story. Not as visually exciting as its predecessor. Blade Runner: The Final Cut UHD, on the other hand, is amongst the most visually exciting films I've ever seen. Blade Runner 2049 had a better story than its predecessor. Too bad the visuals weren't as equal to the story.
I watched it tonight, and to be honest, i wasn't that blown away...it was reasonably good, but not mind blowing on my projector and 4k player...sorry guys

According to todays update on www.areadvd.de 4k UHD UK or international SONY PICTURES of BR2049 is also without DOLBY VISION, wrong backcover information on UK UHD backcover, i was happy and 110% sure about DOLBY VISION on international SONY PICTURES UHD but nooooo, DOLBY VISION HDR only online streaming and that sucks, 4k online is not the quality like on disc.
I figured BR 2049 would get a great score for PQ and AQ, but my goodness this movie is boring. I literally fell asleep during it and it was a pain to watch. I really don't see how people are claiming this as a classic movie. I don't need explosions in every movie, just a good story would suffice, but this movie offered nothing but a very slow burn. Great review as usual though!
Dirk504 idk for me I find the movie so investing considering the visuals tell a conflicting side of Ryan's character. There is no point to convince you otherwise but this movie was so awesome. Especially with Roger Deakin's Cinematography it feels much more investing than a 25 minutes even of Harrison Ford saying "enhance"...

So does HDR mean the picture is darker and therefore I see less detail in darker scenes? Because its sure looks that way to me.
HDR just expands the range of colors and fleshes them out. Makes the picture look more lifelike. Dolby Vision does the same.
