I wish we could have like a national caboose weeks or something where all railways put cabooses on the ends of all their trains. They’re just such an iconic symbol of American railroading!
The railroads were compelled by union rules to supply one caboose to house the crew assigned to every train. They were disliked by the railroads, as they required the same maintenance/repairs that other revenue-generating freight cars needed, but the caboose brought in no revenue. Railroads rejoiced when they were finally allowed to leave cabooses sitting in the sidings, awaiting sale, donation, or scrapping. 🚂
Excellent topic! Yes, America’s railroads once had a cornucopia of cabooses and utilized them to the maximum, even using them beyond their rail worthiness for trackside crew shelters and equipment storage purposes. Both my S and O Gauge layouts each boast one train consisting of just over 20 cabooses each…a pretty impressive sight! 🚂
Back when all railroad rollingstock had journal boxes for bearings, the caboose allowed the rear brakemen to monitor it for overheating. They came out with roller bearings, but the caboose was still required by law until the late '80s or early '90s.
OUTSTANDING video & collection. Yes the caboose played a VERY important part of the railroad system. So sad you don't see many anymore. But I won't forget the sights I saw & the vital role the played. Thanks again for a " memory lane" of the past !
As a Christmas layout modeler, the caboose is my 2nd or 3rd most important and featured rolling stock. Locomotive is first then the caboose depending how impressive and utilized the tender is.
Fun fact: the plural word for caboose is "cabeese." I love a caboose. When i was a kid, i dreamed about living in one. It's the only railcar I can't stop myself from collecting. I gotta have them all. I counted 59, by the way.

That's a lot of cabeese. I just went to Strasburg the other day, reminds me of the red caboose in, so many different liverys
I would have liked to see an L&N caboose in your assortment of these cars. I worked for L&N in the 1970's. I did enjoy the video.
Awesome.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
There’s something about cabooses that makes trains feel complete. The FREDs just don’t have the same effect.
Since going the way of landline phones they should hold their value.
Very nice Eric !!!!!
Can you try and put together all of the passenger cars and see how long it will take to go all the way around the layout?
I like bay window caboose 😊
The caboose was very important. We have a nice one at our railroad museum. #trainfam

How many are from the MPC era or older? Anyone can collect modern stuff.
NICE SALUTE TO THE CABOOSE. I NEED THOSE 6 UP HERTAGE CABOOSES BEING PULLED BY THE BIG BOY SO I CAN PULL THEM BEHIND MINE. 😉
Eric can you do a video on how to custom paint a model o gauge locomotive?
