I think to make peace with your situation you'd need to find a job elsewhere and get away from it all to keep your outlook intact, or disconnect from any meaning these people have to you which is to pull at the threads of the illusion of love. Because building up too much strength against emotional ailments can easily lead to callous indifference, and a sort of pandoras box that can't be closed again. You're a genuine guy and I don't think you deserve that situation your ex put you through, but see that more as her failing than any problem on your end. I'm sure there are plenty of women that would be happy to have you, its just a matter of deciding if pursuing that is worth it. Sort of like playing the lottery, finding the right person and all the circumstances needed for you to even meet.
