The 10 Cheapest States To Live In America

- Broke? Want a new start? Tired of the rat race? Well, then, it might be time to move to a new state.
In this video, we explore the states where you can move if you want a cheap cost of living. This includes the places in America where housing costs are low, and where the living wage is also low - meaning you don't have to work as hard to survive.
We take into account other factors as well, such as food costs, the cost of child care, and the cost of owning a vehicle.
Hopefully, you'll have a better sense of what options you have if you're looking to move. And if you live in a cheap state already, good for you! You're living a much less stressful life.

I live in the Bronx so almost anywhere I move to is gonna be cheaper. If you can stretch a dollar in NYC you can survive ANYWHERE
Is the bronx expensive ? I thought I't was a ghetto
@@debbiemontague2355 Gentrification
@@debbiemontague2355 Go to Riverdale and see how ghetto it is.You wouldn't even think you were in the Bronx or NYC for that matter ( besides the traffic)
Patrick y you got that right 💯 👌 I live in upstate New York, about 35-40 minutes from the Bronx.. and it's just ridiculously outrageous! You get tired of penny-pinching trying to stretch that dollar.. I just want to live comfortably, not asking for much..just want to live where I can feel safe and be comfortable 😊
@@aura7007 I totally agree. For us regular folks...the 2 jobs or OT ppl working 60-80 hrs/w/k....Ppl that don't live in NYC don't realize we're not working those hours to get rich....we are working those hours just to keep even or slightly ahead.
Most people are broke as a joke because we don't pay wages that people can live off of - we are a credit card dependent nation.
Not me!! Paid them off 20 years ago and will never go back.
Or we don't know how to budget and we spend what we don't have
Marketing is a powerful practice. Most people die around $60k in debt. Most are medical.
The choices we make.
May as well get a credit card & charge it. Cause thats the only way youll ever be able to afford anything
“Our cheapest state in America is...Mississippi”
*shows a picture of the New Orleans skyline*
Who wants to move there
maybeb
Maybe the New Orleans skyline is visible from the east side of the Pearl River, can it be?
@@Canardeur In parts of SE Louisiana, the New Orleans skyline can't be seen, even on clear days (It rains all the time there)
@Richi RIch Wow really? I didn't know they had Hasidim there.
I would be interested in him covering the cheapest cities in the US.
In australia $250,000 gets you a hole in the ground
@irishbreakfast Wow, negative much?
Yo mate $250 in CALIFORNIA gets you a dirt bed by the 405 freeway!!! You could call it a hole..
250k gets you in line to bid for a hole in NYC....
How big of a hole?
In Houston I got my 4,100 sq ft house for $210,000 lol Texas is king.
I mean, I'd rather live somewhere cheap, and have the extra money for adventures and experiences. I've never needed or wanted an extravagant apartment.
Remember, those states are cheap for a reason. Those states also pay less wages (sometimes way less depending on the state) than expensive states for equivalent jobs.
Me too Kyle if you can get a good job like E-man says
Those states tend to also have less jobs opportunity. Most of those jobs wages are closer to minimum wage, which for most of those states are the same as federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour or slightly above that. If you're fortunate enough to get a good paying job from those states, then you're in much better shape than most.
In NJ cheap housing equals = drug dealers and garbage. No thank you. I found a sugar daddy....and I work.
You must be a millennial. They like experiences.
Your adaptation of West Side Story was worth a like all on its own. But there were several LOL's in this one. And your vids are also very informative. Keep it going, Nick.
So basically conservative states are affordable.
MrMusiclover41 salty liberal are we?
Realistic thought he isn't lying so.
@MrMusiclover41; and that's a BAD thing??
Liberals have rotten everything they've touched out here in Cali as well as back home in Michigan.
MrMusiclover41 not sure which states are the ones who are backwards. The ones that implement policies we once fought against(socialism) or the states that preserve liberty?
@@mrmusiclover4178 okay but look at how shitty all the liberal states are.
The most expensive states in America is California and New York.
Hawaii is THE MOST EXPENSIVE STATE to LIVE
Don’t forget states like Illinois, New Jersey, Massachusetts, CT and Vermont.
The humor you interject is fantastic and location appropriate.
thanks Lawrence :)
Love your videos, you do such a great job with the narrating. Its obvious you spend alot of time in preparation.
just subbed :)
love u man. those parting lines, really somethin'
Cool you should sub it gets better!
I like your ending message. So real....
I lived in Tennessee for 3 years and the sales tax there is 10% for everything including food not as cheap as people think
Homes are cheap. You cant get everything. My mom sold her house in FL and moved to TN. My mom was able to buy her house in TN (cash), pay the movers (cash), help me with 1 semester of college, and still had $100,000 left over.
Homes are cheap in Tennessee I have lived there my whole life
@@MOREtoocozycam Depends on the area don't try living in Brentwood!
@@cherij9008 live ten minutes from downtown Nashville
I live downtown Nashville. Old non renovated apt.. $1200 a month
I live in Indiana.
THANK YOU FOR SAYING POSITIVE THINGS
$93,000 is the poverty line here in Hawaii. Cali got nothing on high pricing
@Suburban Kid DO NOT WORRY. OPEN BORDERS WILL REPLENISH CALI WITH HIGH IQ, EDUCATED, CRITICAL THINKING HUMAN BEINGS. PSSSHHHH
In San Francisco 100,00 it’s a low income
Is it a coincidence that the cheapest places are also the least desirable? Maybe not. It's called market economics.
John blaze Lovely sceneries, affordable cost of living, hospitable people, delicious cuisine, etc.
Everyone is different , I would desire living in the country with no big cities no traffic and just simple life , but you might want that life so you can’t really go off desires because they vary
@@volkyyog3474 One might think so. But the boredom sets in sooner than one anticipates.
South Carolina?
@@cocotaveras8975 Poverty/lack of buying power is the reason for the affordability. the "hospitable people" are hospitable only if you don't happen to be the wrong color, an immigrant, or a Jew. And if you don't mind their slavish loyalty to The Trump. Their food is delicious - but only if you like everything deep-fried.
I just came to tell yall maryland is overpriced asf and its not even nice
The job market is huge there. Wages are high. Lots of Government jobs. Military bases are everywhere. you can put a boat in the Chesapeake Bay. That is the great equalizer in Maryland. Nature. Get out of the city and take some in. It's gorgeous.
I'd rather live in Maryland than New York though!
I love maryland but its the dope capitol
I be up essex and its cool fr, you gotta be up the right parts but its aight. I fw Parkville, towson
the key is finding somewhere between low prices and amenties. too much of either one of them for people with modest incomes will hurt you. anywhere where the cost of living is low automatically tells you employment is low in that area or you have to communte long distance to find work ,which equal to about the same of cost of living in area with high cost of living. and if you live in a area heavily populated that make it convenient to get to any place you choose from food, medical, amusement everything naturally goes up.
Do you think Shangri-La exists? Because there are no secret bargains in real estate in a bad economy.
Cant win in general LOL
Hello!I want to become a Doctor and eventhough i live in Europe at the moment i am planning on coming to the US!Which states or even towns do you suggest?
@@funforall666 its depends on what you define as your personal wellbeing.
@@Tirrell25 well something far from California style states and citys so something quiet but not really small.
This one was pretty good ! Add as much humor as possible in each video!
I don't try to add humor I just try to tell it lightheartedly 😉
I found this list interesting. Thanks for the info.
Yay! Did you sub? Are you planning to move to a cheaper state?
finally Indiana is on a list, and you said something good abt Indiana 🙃
I know I did it just for you Madelyn!!
Born and raised in Indiana and sure glad I moved south..
Indiana SUCKS! A northern state with southern thinking which means low wages, intelligence and thinking, it SUCKS! Oh yeah and the KKK started here so THAT tells you about THIS SHITHOLE!
A lot of people on drugs there and they are terrible drivers.
Good work I enjoyed that and your sense of humour
Thanks Robert! Sub to the new channel we're moving there ua-cam.com/channels/aaUXch8Wm42KSdYh6p8ffA.html
Nick you made from all states unboxing videos? They are the best videos! Cheers
Thanks Jason. Duly noted.
WV is probably overall the most beautiful state in the US and there are many nice communities and lovely homes.
Highest opiated communities too but beautiful state .
Sunny Day Ikr! Actually considering moving there....
Lovely sceneries and nice people combined with an affordable cost of living makes it awesome! :)
Nope
Too much incest & overdoses...I'll pass 🤣
Man, these random phone calls are hilarious.
please do this more often
WOW!! Good to know that👍
TheDragonLady Philippines Ikr!
In the Tennessee part, I'd like to add that East Tennessee (Knoxville) is not backwards either!
I just want to point out how much overlap there is with the lists of Dumbest/Poorest/Cheapest states. Special congrats to Mississippi for for sweeping the first place spot on all three lists 🎉
For once number one in something good, if cheapest is good....
Nick what state do you live in?! And why did you pick it make a video about it. That would be fun.
I live in North Carolina I will roast my home state just for you Henry.
GLITTER BLITZ and I live in Charlotte and it’s becoming grossly expensive to live here
Very interesting, carry on!
You should sub Alexandr!
I live in Hawaii!!! And this place is expensive
FLYTAILS MOBILE SALON I was shocked at Hawaii!!!
i wanna move there
1800 a month in Hawaii is cheap
Same, I live in Maui!
How much you need per month ?
10 Indiana 9 Ohio 8 South Carolina 7 Kentucky 6 Alabama 5 South Dakota 4 Tennessee 3 West Virginia 2 Arkansas 1 Mississippi...I have either lived in or visited all these states [and more] except SD and Arkansas. What each offers would be according to what you are looking for. If you love the great outdoors all are great places to live. If you don't have to have every new item that comes out you'll do OK in any of them.
What happened to Ok. Outside of Tulsa and OKC. My mortgage is under 300 a month including tax and ins. Nice rentals are around 500. Groceries are cheap.
Yes true but you have to be ready for flood storm anytime
What happened is although Oklahoma is cheap, but not in the top 10. Oklahoma is more expensive than the states listed on average.
Small towns in Oklahoma have cheap rent but no jobs, boring and being taken over by welfare and drug dealers
Its the steers and queers that bug me.
@@nycfurious I can do that; I'm from Pa. :)
Mapping great job.😍
Great video you’re funny my guy
So glad Nebraska did not make the list. Knew it all along. Not to mention it is going to go up again.
I sure hope Mappy gets his own channel one day, he's such a character. 👊🤓👍
Lol 😂. Great video. Love that you kept me entertained
Me too! You could always sub 😉
verry helpful for me !
In Washington its 1800$ a month at least for A decent family sized home
I watch these house hunting shows on Tv and see young couples looking at $800,000 houses in California and other expensive states. How the hell does a 28 year old couple afford a house like that? I know damn well they're making 60K each max.
i think those shows are fake! they find an attractive couple and pretend they have money.
@@NickJohnson It's either that or I make significantly less than most other people, but I tell myself I'm doing ok. After all, I spend my time watching Nick Johnson videos on UA-cam and still manage to pay my bills.

Hey in Montana you can rent an apartment for 400$ a month
Unbelievable!😍
@@tustazowiowao in some places in Montana they even cover utilities with that 400$ price tag
Just need to move there and save money.i hope they have job
@@tustazowiowao I recommend Helena and great falls those are city's with decent population but cheaper living cost I don't recommend boseman though purely because it's population is increasing very quickly and the price of living there is going up with it
But how easy is it to make six figures? Do you have public transportation so you don’t need a car? All that adds to supply and demand
He said Ohio stinks 😂
Representing Dayton! Lots of nice suburbs here. And shopping/restaurants etc....downtown can def use a facelift
I love Dayton the Oregon district
I spend time in Columbus for work. I liked it but the drug problem looked so bad compared to NYC. It was scary sometimes walking alone.
Lovely explanation.
As for WV, I've been on that bridge seen in the overhead shot of Harper's Ferry.
New river is the best
I'm retiring in Mississippi! Just 22 more years.
By then it will be so popular it will be one of the most expensive 🤣
Felicity Joy yeah right!😂 they are on a population decline
With the money you'd spend in Mississippi likely in a tailer park, you could retire in Mexico in a mansion with your own maid, palm trees, blue skys, great weather and the blue Caribbean in your back yard living with free public health care and free public university education for your grown up kids. Retiring in hell Mississippi vs retiring in paradise🤔
@@hiddenkard3101 Watch out for the cartels.
I'm surprised Missouri wasn't on the list. Oh well, they don't call it "Misery" for nothing.
I want out!
@@earthy_girl1016 me too
Missouri is lit tho
Your "America" song is GOLD.
i like that song. do you sing?
The big cities in the Midwest are a good trade off but a lot of people don't like the weather and how far away you are from the ocean.
I like how he says so cheap where do you live *person on other line * I'm sorry who's this?😂😂😂😂 it's like.. You ask that after you talk with them. I question the person before I even talk to them lmao.
I used to use Groupon, until I realized I need to spend two hours commuting back and forth to actually use these coupons.

Hi Wendy!! 😘 from the US.
You should do a cleanest/dirtiest states
Northeast Georgia is BEAUTIFUL!!
In South Georgia, theres some scummy places & the ppl are rude as hell & DONT speak good English!!! AXE is a tool thts used 4 cutting dwn a tree or chopping up firewood!!! U NEVER "AXE" A QUESTION!!!!! But South Ga teachers DONT correct their students!!!!

That's ok, I'll just go on paying $700 per month for my 1600 sq. ft. house with 1 acre of land in central Ohio. Btw, my city is one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. so apparently many people disagree about the desirability of the great O-H-I-O. We spell well too ;).
I doubt the footage shown starting at 10:30 was filmed in Arkansas, judging from all the spruce trees.
Best video I’ve seen for a while lol
Good did you sub? There's a hundred more!
As a Tennesseean I can attest that besides, Nashville, Nashville's suburbs (to an extent), Memphis, Chattanooga and Knoxville are the only places in the state that arent backwards
Memphis is really just that bad . Our crime challenges cities like Chicago ,Baltimore, New Orleans . Memphis is the roughest city in the U.S .
Agreed I lived in Memphis for 13 years growing up. I was so happy to finally get out
@@fafadfasfa , Memphis Is Hood Asf
It sure is, my city sucks
10:02 The reason why child care costs are in the top five is because West Virginia is a retirement destination and has the fewest child residents out of any state by a landslide.
Clark Gable and Coldet Cobber too funny best hitchhiking scene ever 🤩
You mean Claudet Colbert? That was her in the old movie scene with Clark Gable.
They were on a subway.
Rent is actually going up in (central)Ohio. Due to how big the population is getting
Tie a knot in it people.
So Cincinnati is still good?
Virginia is exceptionally high to live in, especially northern VA and Hampton Roads. But let's not get it confused with West Virginia which is a completely different state. Sorry you had to read that, but you'd be surprised how many people don't know that. They think it's like the western part of Virginia lol. I've lived in NY, CA, TX, VA, NC, PA and can attest that VA is very expensive.
I think that it’s better to live in those “in between” states, you will have a higher chance of getting a decent job, and housing won’t be crazy. Those inexpensive states are cheap for a reason, less pay and less job opportunities.
😂😂😂😂 I really love your UA-cam channel
you are too funny "bust out three kids" LOLLOLLOL each time I say I'm not gonna laugh...just listen with a straight face...IMPOSSIBLE!!
Living in Charleston, South Carolina is a bit pricey but the areas further away are cheap. After a few years, SC will drop out of the list. Too many people are moving out here.
Taxes and politics is causing your problem
Roughly around 50 k to live in any one of these places but the job market is probably not easy
You should mention what the weather is like too
Nice video! FYI - When you start Mississippi, the city you're showing is New Orleans, LA but it is of the Mississippi river. :)
Yes Bob I didn't have any footage so I did the next closest thing. You should sub there's way more than just that one video 😏
@@NickJohnson I can totally understand the lack up Mississippi footage. I did like seeing my home town, NOLA, in your video! :)

@@NickJohnson Sacramento has to be the worst now.
I was surprised North Carolina wasn't on this list. Sure, it has its podunk poor areas, but the rest of the state is not bad whatsoever. Four season climate with decent beaches and beautiful mountains, how can you go wrong. My mortgage is affordable and insurance is low. The only complaint is that it's weather can quite humid and hot, but you get used to it after a few seasons.
No one said NC was a bad place!
@@NickJohnson True! I just was thinking in terms of affordability ☺️
North central Illinois, rent for a two bedroom house is around an average 650.00 a month, food for a family of 4 is roughly 400 a month, taxes are basically the same except tobacco. You can live on 30k a year.
I liked your Huey intro 👍 just went perfect before the 10:00 toke down
Toke down?
This is true I was living in Orlando Florida ( downtown) in a condo was expensive one bedroom and one bathroom
Iam moving to Kentucky ( Ohio) because of work 😣😣 I don’t like it the city looks so dirty and bored but anyway the good thing is I bought a house whit 3 bedroom and 3 bathrooms .. for the same money I was paying for my condo !
The good news about Ohio is that you are unlikely to get a sunburn. I've seen it go overcast for six weeks straight. :--(
A motor home sounds ideal !
Lol that intro though!
Nick, do you live in the mountains, the piedmont, or the east. I am from NC too and live down east
Piedmont
68k in CA it’s enough to rent a single apt only and drive to work for 3 hours per day 🙁🙁
Like Sacramento which is fairly affordable.
Albert Sancho not natomas, rancho cordova, Elk Grove, el dorado hills, and downtown sac is expensive
Albert Sancho Sacramento is not affordable.
24 SAV I stay in Natomas. Im paying 1300/1 bed apt. Everyone is like why don’t you rent a house or buy a house. Tell me where you gonna find a “Nice” house for cheaper.
The fact I live in Natomas and its mention in these is funny to me. Shits expensive
There are alot of great areas in Ohio. Warren and Butler counties come to mind.
Warren Co has King's Island so yes, however, Butler County's largest municipality is Middletown, which a sizable portion of it is pretty sketchy. Kinda Dayton's smaller sibling. At least it's my take.
Finally South Dakota makes a list! Chislic is delicious. I’m surprised flysch keifla wasn’t on the food list. One of our strangest named foods but it’s so damn good. Mustangs Sally’s in the gambling town of Deadwood, the retro diner place pictured in the first South Dakota picture is also delicious
i love learning
me too!
Louisiana is cheaper, in Baton Rouge you can get apts. In $450 and $550.
I like me some good jambalaya rice, but sadly the truth of low rent costs is because the whole city of NOLA is below sea level, and the hurricanes pretty much sealed the deal of living over there.
It’s not bad in the SouthWest it’s nice to live here but not so much the east
Get some good jobs other than Coca Cola bottling plant and the University and you have a desirable city
Is it safe though?
As someone who is born and raised in Mississippi, my mother paid $60 a WEEK for my brother and I to go to the babysitter from 7:30 am-5:00 pm. Mississippi is a really great place that does not get enough credit!
