I think companies (and it’s not just the bike industry) have been playing a game of how much can we sell for and now that the economy has slowed down reality has come back to haunt them.

Not only is this an inventory surplus issue, it's also an economic slow-down issue. I work in the fishing equipment industry manufacturing and selling rods and reels directly to consumers. People are holding their money. We've had to drop profit margins and do aggressive sales just to get customers to buy. Thankfully it seems to be stabilizing but it's too early to tell.
Like Kona, We also had old stock that needed to be cleared out. Breaking even or making thin margins to get cash in hand is better than having old, stagnant inventory on hand. You can't buy new equipment with old equipment.

Couldn’t agree more / I always thought bike companies who sold hardtail frames made from 4130 steel for over $1000.00 were up to no good. That steel pipe has been around since the dark ages and its been cut welded but marketed as some boutique / cool hipster crap that some folks will pay for. Its become about the name you ride not what you like to ride. Just another equipment sport out of control so sit back and watch it boil over.

The prices are still to high for today’s market which is very small now. I select core group will always pay for top quality bikes & equipment but that is an even smaller group. I don’t know how the industry just kept building & stockpiling so much stuff when it should’ve been clear that the frenzy from COVID wasn’t going to last & they should’ve been paying attention & slowed down everything now they are stuck with bikes that are already a year old & about to become 2 years old & good luck selling a 2 year old model for the prices they say are discounted no one is going to buy them & they are just going to sit longer losing more & more value . Kona has realized that they need to recover some of the money rather then recover none & still be stuck with old stock which costs $. The industry better start having heavy heavy discounts & even that’s not a guarantee that even that will work.

I've been seeing on some eMTB groups that some Specialized shops were selling a Turbo Levo (unsure what model) for $3,500 USD and tossing in a spare 500wh battery (it comes with a 700wh); or perhaps it was the Alloy version which comes with a 500wh and they were tossing in a spare 700wh battery.

The bike industry, just like the car industry, needs a MASSIVE adjustment as they are so overpriced it's insane. I love seeing every bike company overpricing and gouging their customers go out of business....so yeah, I don't shed a tear for that company going out of business. Please don't flame me for that comment, I've ran a successful business in an extremely competitive market for over 10yrs and been successful. The way to NOT go out of business is to price your product so the "average person" can afford it and you win by volume. If you jump on the bandwagon of all the others who are ramping up their prices, you simply hold water with them. You undercut them and price to where the average person can afford your product, without compromising quality, and you win in spades!
I've been in the market for a new bike for a year or so and refuse to buy at the current prices. The more companies that fail, the more the others panic, and you win. Wait them out folks!

I don't like the impact this is having on workforce (lay-offs, closures, etc.), but a few months ago I bought a Nukeproof Reactor off Chain Reaction for £1650 (yup!). CRC also had some insane discounts (not just clearance junk) on all MTB items disguised as Black Friday. I just checked and my NP Reactor is now on CRC for £3000. I know CRC/NP are/were in trouble (think they have a buyer), but they've clearly generated enough revenue from these sales to get back to "normal" pricing. Does make you wonder what margins they run at though.

Price honestly is secondary, when the problem is getting the bike that you want, when you want it.
During the height of covid, I thought it would be a good time to change my bikes since I had more time to ride. Yes, it was clearly more expensive than usual. But thanks to the jacked up prices, I had fewer people to contend with for the stocks. Hence I scored my bikes, rode it through Covid, while those folks spent their extra riding time during covid on their old bikes.

Overpriced, like others says. Like Elon says: it's the cost of a material + labor. The labor is cheap in countries where they're produced and aluminum, metal, carbon is not that expensive. Can imagine it costs them no more than $1000 to produce a bike that they sell for $4000.

    • @Durwood71
      @Durwood71 6 місяців тому

Material and labor is only part of it. There's also the expense of inventory storage and shipping, research, marketing, sales personnel, upkeep of retail stores, and so on. I suspect the profit margin on most mountain bikes smaller than any of us suspect.

Right away regarding Kona it made me think, if they can sell one bike and give one away for free, then how much are they making for a profit on the sale of those 2 bikes, or they could be breaking even. This then makes me think how much are they making on one bike without any special offers or a free bike added.
Also, it's possibly a well-guarded secret in the bike retail industry how much markup these bike brands actually make, I guess I will never know.
Here in the UK, we have also seen a big shift in the pricing of bikes, and especially e-bikes, with the cost of living crisis in the UK many are holding on to their old bikes/e-bikes. The second user market is struggling to sell bikes/e-bikes also. From the folks that I know of that have bought new bikes, they have all gone for financing, usually 4 years interest-free credit.

  • @Older_Mountain-goat_1984

Regardless of how dramatic the discounts are, the manufacturers still make enormous profit...thus more evidence that manufacturers (of all products, not just bikes) have always stolen from others by grossly marking up their prices.
While we're conditioned to think and feel we've got a good bargain during a sale, the reality is they're till ripping customers off.

So you're saying I missed out on over paying for a mtn bike? I just bought my first full suspension bike, used . It was a custom built bike. The seller built it for his dad that never rode it. The seller used the Heller Barghest frame, which I know, they has since closed their doors. But this bike was loaded with great components. I figured if the frame turns out to be a dud I at least have great parts to swap. The carbon wheel set alone is worth what I paid for the bike.

I've seen a lot of good used bikes for sale at fraction of the cost. I guess these people selling want to take advantage of the new bikes on sale. For someone like myself on a budget and still newer to mountain biking, I scored a sweet deal on a used bike that appeared to be well taken care of and for what I use it for, Its probably more than I need however if I do decide to up my game a little I know the bike I got will handle it. The bike is a few years old and needed a brake bleed and a light cleaning, $1499USD brand new, I got for $500CAD so I'm pretty stoked.

    Such a bummer about GG.
Cool bikes. Unique carbon process. Everyone I ever heard talk about 'em loved 'em. It was my next bike, for sure...nevermind, I guess.
I wonder who is sitting on the intellectual property. There's GOT to be an existing manufacturer with an aging brand ethos who could retool their entire brand and appeal to a whole fresh batch of riders by picking up where GG left off all for the price of a couple proprietary machines and a pat on the back for the designs.
GT? Giant? Anybody want to take a chance on building me...and other people...a killer bike?
