Was Gaddafi a man who could lead a nation?
      ua-cam.com/video/HJcGTjAFGjk/v-deo.html
Nelson Mandela: "In fact, Mr. Gaddafi did not allow us to open our offices in Libya precisely because we had the courage to say to him: 'We work with the Jews in our organization.'
Nelson Mandela: "And he didn’t allow us to open an office until February this year, when he had to accept us as we are."
It sounds as though Gaddafi changed his principles depending on whether an organization included Jews.

USA and Great Britain also supported South Africa, and so did Israel but for strategic reasons : after 1973 South Africa was the only country in Africa that continued having relationships with Israel. It has nothing to do with supporting the apartheid but keeping relationships with a State for political and financial reasons, as USA and Great Britain did.
Not so fun fact : The main palestinian leader was antisemite and spent 4 years in Germany during the war, and did all he could to stop the Jews from entering Palestine during Holocaust encouraging Hitler to kill all the jews. Nelson Mandela.

    • @bry8636
      @bry8636 3 роки тому +2

I think your citation is being misunderstood.
It would appear by Mandela’s own answer, that his own morality changes from nation to nation depending on whether they support South Africa or not. As opposed to judging those nations’ leaders on how they lead.
How can you support someone like Fidel who is unequivocally oppressing his own people?
I can say this accurately and with full knowledge as someone who escaped Castro’s Cuba.
Something Mandela should know plenty about.
That said, I admire and respect Mandela. He is a giant of a man with a deep well of empathy.
And it doesn’t change his original comment ‘political analysts make the mistake of thinking they’re enemies should also be ours’
      It’s an accurate statement.
But the question was driving at ‘how can you Mandela, given your own peoples’ struggles, support a regime that oppresses its own people?’
It was a clever dodge on Mandela’s part. He is not only a great leader but can play the political game as well. He does not want to make enemies of these supporters.
Even when those supporters are doing the exact thing Mandela opposes directly.
So they’re putting Mandela between a rock an a hard place. Should he disown support from immoral leaders whose very existence challenges their crusade of freedom?
Who does that hurt? His own people who are now bereft of that support.
So should Mandela take a stance against immorality over the short term fate of his people?
I say yes, and it’s by far the more courageous thing to do.
Again I have the utmost reverence for Mandela, but I don’t like seeing him play the politician, even if he is good at it.
To put it another way, yes, you should bite the hand that feeds you if that hand is practicing the same acts that subjugated your own people.
A tacit acceptance of their support is an acceptance of their own immorality.

I remember watching this on TV back when I was 11 years old and falling absolutely in love with Madiba. I don't think South Africa had satellite TV back then, but I do remember having some access to CNN and Sky News broadcasts in the build-up to the Gulf War and I although I was only a little boy, I had already grown distrustful of the news as it was being fed to us by those channels based on "A" - the fact that all the Middle East really had that anyone else in the Western world could've been interested in was oil and was otherwise just a million square kilometer cat box and "B" - I couldn't understand why our own national news was always so matter-of-fact and straightforward (I don't think I knew the difference between objectivity and subjectivity yet) and the news as it appeared on CNN was always so steaming with emotion by comparison to ours. Beside that, I couldn't help but notice how much money seemed to be being spent on producing programs about almost nothing of any importance to anyone, but featured awesome action shots of fighter jets taking off and the B-52 Bomber stealthily flying through the air like the Batplane and all the crazy hectic music and stuff. Already I didn't get all the greed that seemed so obviously to drive decisions that were being reported on. It was weird. My dad was way into all of it. George Bush Sr. was one of my old man's heroes. Hell, I don't know. My dad had started bashing my face in almost every time he came home from a parents' evening at my primary school with my report. Maybe I didn't like them because my dad did like them. I just thought the whole America-will-make-everyone-do-what-it-wants-and-you-all-refuse-US-at-your-own-peril vibe was tyrannical and kind of like the way bullies do things.
So I watched this and my dad muttered his way through the first half of it behind me on the sofa before storming out of the room halfway through in a huff about halfway through and leaving me to applaud him without even really knowing what I was applauding.
We had it really good with Nelson Mandela. We had it pretty good with his successor Thabo Mbeki, too. Pity about the whole Jacob Zuma thing. But by the time we were halfway into Zuma's first term, we'd kinda lost our tether to the wider world altogether and Zuma's self-professed unschooled, undisciplined populist everyman kick managed to secure him nine years of South African presidency despite his starting out facing allegations of rape made by an HIV positive woman and his shaking it off with a "just take a shower and everything is fine."
Man, what I wouldn't do for another Mandela , or at least for a return of his spirit to the current South African political sphere. Maybe President Ramaphosa's hiding that spirit up his sleeve somewhere and just waiting for the BRICS thing to happen before letting it out. That being said, Ramaphosa's a pretty serious businessman and VERY connected to the same things I recognized as symbols of evil when I was 11.
But her, a guy can dream.

One of the greatest men of our time. Highlight of my childhood was shaking his hand and watching him become our leader and uniting our people. I'm glad he's not alive today to see how bad things are but I genuinely hope future generations look to him for inspiration.

@@takuma359 I certainly did! We used to have this thing called children's day and it was a big event. He was at one I went to, and at one stage they let all the kids line up and meet him. His message was to look forward and work to make the country even better. Shame not many followed his example.

somebody will come to ur country without right, committe massacres, displace your people to small trapped area and then he will define himself as a country, build sattelments more that the cities which he occupied, kill your people every day, so according to ur "common sense" his "country" has the right of existance, and if he had been there for 75 years then you "must" consider and respect his "country" not to be an extermist
