DAMN!!!! That white Volvo 242/244 in the background! They are EXPENCIVE nowadays atleast here in Sweden!
Wow. And Volvo 242. From 1975-1977. Awsome Swedish car. Greetings from Sweden.
I loved the little clips that you had at the end and sometimes giving us a glimpse of what's going to be on next awesome idea
better than hollywood does it!
Glad you like them!
Dear A.F.
👍👌👏 Yeah, I like them too, definitely. Kind of appetizer for the next part.
Best regards, luck and health.
@@mustie1 The nature shots too. The Poetic Hoarder ! Ha !
Yes, next up... Hens! 😁
These years of watching Mustie have inspired me to take much better care of my small equipment. Thanks for your time and effort Mustie
Mustie HAPPY THAKSGIVING, GOD BLESS YOU...
Hot coffee in the mug, a fresh Mustie on the screen - life's good! At least for the next 43min 28s...
Same here, great way to start my day, coffee, Mustie and a shed filled with 2 stroke smoke. LOL
You drink coffee from a gasoline visual probing cup? :)
Yeah man, Mustie always makes my day. It is interesting, I can learn from him and it is fun and relaxing. Just what I need in these "weird" times.
Same bud
Early morning with Mustie, Andrew Camarata, Vice Grip, Cletus, and life is good.
A Volvo 244! 1976 maybe? That is what you should have getting your hands on! Damn what a beauty.. And greetings from Sweden!
Watch "The Skid Factory" if you want to see a 1UZ Toyota V8 turbo conversion to an oldish Volvo.
There is a rod that runs from the throttle to the front of the engine bay, it has a little round bell top and underneath it is a microswitch and the bell is adjustable for starter/throttle timing. Push the pedal and the switch releases. 90lbs of compression at 5500ft was absolutely minimum on these. Things that wear out on those engines are the throttle shaft gets egged out and leaks (check if it wiggles side to side). Governor needs work ,revving it waaaay too high. Mufflers on these get plugged (popping made me think of this).. we used to take a chisel and poke a hole in them next to the outlet to open them up without buying a new one. They make jug and piston kits for these (used to anyhow). My kind of project. ;) Cheers sir!
Mid week Mustie, Always a pleasure to watch this man spin he's magic! I'm suprised it started but looking at the next video i'm guessing he found parts!
My uncle likes to grind without safety glasses too, been to the ER three times to have metal removed from his eyeballs. Protect your gazers!
I like to do it without glasses too until I got to be near 40:). Never had any issues. I wear ear plugs and glasses now. Some people are better at things than others. Some people can juggle and some people can't walk on flat ground. I also weld with just a pair of gloves and a helmet while wearing shorts and flip flops, it is the only way I can get a tan.:P
Even when you wear the glasses you still get metal in your eyes its not a big deal. they just freeze them with drops and pull out the little splinter. I've had it done quite a few times as a welder fitter. lol
You are right
a young friend of mine thought it is ridiculous to wear safety glasses when using a little Dremel, then a disc exploded and now he only sees with one eye....
Check passenger side "doghouse" for year and model. Also golf carts don't idle, its either go or no go. once its going it goes good. I have a 1984 ezgo textron 244cc robin engine cart.
What really that's very not intuitive
@@eaglewi Makes sense though, in theory you just hop in, put the pedal to the metal and zip to the next hole, then hop out. Saves fuel too.
@@amstrad00 that’s why they use Tayotas for golf carts in 🇨🇦.
On the Robin engine tag the Motor Number first two digits will be the motor year. IE mine is 82-xxxxx
The first two digits on the older EZGOs serial number is the year , for example mine is 77052 -****** so a 77 model
all you had to say was " 2 stroke " and Josh was in ...cool piece 👍
When mustie1 was talking to the chickens, he was really talking to us "I got more, calm down". Awesome video, I would really enjoy seeing the top end redone, I haven't seen you replace a cylinder yet.
Second the motion for a quick top end freshening. We used to break the old rings in half, use them to clean the groove, and run the hone in and out a couple of extra passes if the cylinder was scored. They run and rattle.
if there isnt one in the free pile , you wont see it !!cvcfffffff
Its just us chickens out here
If it's not a big money pit and the parts are available I'd very much like to see a rebuild of that top end.
need more cylinder replacment videos lol
I'm delighted you are relieving the individual of those parts. The Steam Cleaner is worth Beaucoup Dolares. They're VERY handy for grease piles. VERY.
Mustie, for a second there I almost thought I was watching a Dangar Marine video with chickens in the last few seconds of the video.
This looks like a fun project. I'm looking forward to part two.
Those are Barred Rock...
Thanks Darren for the extra vids lately. Excellent.
Yay! Mid week Mustie1 videos!!! Thank you Mustie!
I worked for a convention center and we had one of those.. thing was awesome, it would go forward or reverse with the switch, pedal to the floor it would do 25 no questions. So much fun!
Piston and ring kits are cheap for those, I did one several years back. Remove the filter on the oil tank. Thanks
Hi Mustie, nice odd find, but bring the VOLVO 244 home tooo / lol- thanks for the video - Ian - UK.
What a nice variety of projects your giving us.
Enjoying as always with Mustie1 video with my morning cup of coffee here in Norway 8.30 AM 😊👍
Nice Volvo 240.. Used to own two..
Thanks Mustie, for your inspiration. You’ve taught me so much and now I’ve become very proficient at small engine repair. You are amazing. God Bless, brother.
Glad to help
That "marine" switch or whatever you called it is a master power switch to cut off all power to it!
we use golf carts every year at Fryeburg Fair, Its weird how they set them up to not idle. The ones we used were the same way. Nice flock of Barred Rocks at the end.
I enjoy listening to people explain why something doesn't run.
A mind is a terrible thing....
it's like listening to people explaining why they suspect their computer is not working OK. just try to filter without lose your mind.

@@remembergodisalwayswithyou6862 Be proud of your home country man. My parents visited oh, 30 years ago on an organised bus tour which my late Dad hated for its tourists traps. He escaped the group at each stops they made and went in the small streets and alleys and met awesome and friendly inhabitants. He did'nt speak your language but had no problems exchanging with most of people. As a modest man, he liked to meet ordinary folks, leather artisans, (he bought babouches for us all) enjoyed a good strong coffee with another elder and gladly met the family etc. He came back with REAL small souvenirs given to him by his newfound friends.
My parents went to few other places later but my Dad was still longing to go back to Morocco on his own for a longer stay. Have a nice, safe day mon ami ! ✌🏽
This reminds me of a neighbor I had when I lived Georgia...little bit of everything in his garage, including the kitchen sink, and a full bathroom. Loved going scrounging in there.
That is a camp rig for sure would be great for hauling small loads of wood and just nice slow drive through the trails.
Not with one wheel drive and and no ground clearance.

And if your camp ground is that ruff how are ya getting thare in any thing under a 4X4
Old home week for me... I used to be the maintenance supervisor/general director at a conference grounds. I inherited an old Columbia Park Car golf cart. It sounded exactly like yours. The generator/starter needed to be serviced a couple of times, but I never had to buy a new one. It was a fun little maintenance vehicle, and it also was used as a tuck truck for a couple of years taking chocolate bars/candy and soda to people for them to purchase. The poor thing was not coddled, and it took a lot of abuse. I had to weld the frame a few times because of excessive loads, and to pull apart the engine a few times when it refused to start in the spring after bringing it out of storage. I did exactly what you did - I would put the back up on a jack and then start it and run it at full speed to blow the crap out of it (and mice and squirrels) - The end came when somebody ran it into a tree going about 15 miles an hour and broke the front tie rod and pushed the left wheel back about 2 inches... Thanks for the memories Mustie!
Second video: Automatic Honda motor swaped into golf cart, third video:“burnouts”. Great job Musti1!
Thank you for another hour of fantastic infotainment! You are one of the only few mechanics I have the patience to watch as you are a truly humble person. I just want you to know how very appreciative I am that you and (the very few) people like yourself make these channels. I admire you for not asking for money, people to do things they WOULD NORMALLY DO WITHOUT PATHETIC BEGGING lol Having said that if was in a position to donate money to you I totally woudl. Thanks again and keep doing what you do buddy... you da' man!
Back when I played golf in a league I carried a Allen wrench to slide the governor out. We always had the fastest cart..
Sounds fun
@@darthrevan2063 My Uncle Vic really enjoyed employing that "Speed Secret" until the engine threw the connecting rod.
Smart
@@eugenepolan1750 I grew up with EZGO's and Clubcar's, they are both made in my home city of Augusta, Ga and on the 2 strokes running it with no governor will warp the head even on a new one.
I am always amazed when you don't have simple bicycle tools because you own nearly every other tool in existance but that cable would be child's play to cut with a bicycle cable cutter. They compress as they cut so the end is clean and usable.
An old Volvo 240/242 .. i never knew you had em in America.. hahaha :) oh boy i have travled many many many miles in volvo's .. (im in Denmark and we have a volvo Dealer in the family)
I've had three 245's, great cars but a bit thirsty fuel wise. You needed your own oil refinery if you owned a 245, but definitely the safest car I've ever had.
@@CanadairCL44 i had an old orange 245 i used to race in all over the place when the farmers were done harvesting.. even set one corn field on fire once cause the exhaust was dragging on the ground. hahaha.. that's allmost 30 years ago .. cant belive it's been that long. . time passes by sooooo quickly .. and what an insanely crazy year this has been

Golf carts dont idle. Also I used to work on those old EZ-GO carts all the time at the campground, they are notorious for top-ends needing to be replaced. so much so they sell them as a kit, or, used to. That is earlier than 89. as 89 on forward they put those Robin engines upright. then after about 94 they went to the 295cc and 350cc 2-cylinder 4 cycles which were notorious for burning and sinking the valves, among other things.

As always entertaining. Interesting too. Easier than having 80,643 people in you garage to view it .
These engines are a low compression engines for easy starting with the start/gen.
I was thinking the same thing. A higher compression engine would be hard to start on a flat surface let alone a slight incline.
Yes and generally they don't idle. They only run when the foot is on the accelerator and shut off as soon as your foot is off.
@@clintletendre5585 correct
Nice work as always....cool video. Can't wait to see the inside of the engine.
Judging by the brackets underneath it looked like the bed would flip up all of them like this I’ve worked on would always flip up
And thought that to, and the front as well, but that would be too much to ask for.
The guy he got it from said it was welded on.
Yup. I agree.
A mid week mustie video, just what I needed to lift my spirits a bit. Looks like the Cushman paddy wagon may have a companion. I'd say its worth rebuilding with a different with a new engine and transmission setup like the go cart setups. Would make a great little yard / shop / compound runabout.
Cool old Volvo in the background at the start of the pick.
I saw that too. An early 240 series. I was totally hoping he was gonna scoop that too. No such luck. Damn...
The Volvo 244 would have been the best pick there
@@nepttune710 i guess it´s a -78 244
@@TurboDiesel74 that's so awesome. I want it!
Just one correction on the Hondamatic. It is a two speed transmission. First or low gear was for around town, while high gear was for everything. You could leave it in high and drive around town ,but it was not as fast accelerating that way. The torque converter would do what was needed to stop and go. They were great bikes for bracket drag racing, because of their consistent runs.
Darren, if push comes to shove, a comet transmission on a harbor freight engine might be the ticket.
SHOULD BE A BYPASS SWITCH UNDER THE SEAT IN THE CENTER FOR MAINTENANCE SERVICE. THIS ALLOWS IT TO RUN IN NEUTRAL. GOOD JOB SMOKEY!
I found the hard part is they don't idle so adjusting the carb and timing was a guess at best
because they were never meant to idle. took a lot of work on my ezgo to make it idle.
@@spicydeath82 why would you do that?
A few years back I had really good luck bringing a 3 cylinder 2 cycle outboard back to nearly factory new compression by running it at fairly high revs, then adding Seafoam (liquid in the can) into the fuel. It smoked like three dog dickens, but after it settled back down and stopped smoking, the engine had gained 10 to 15 points compression and ran much better. It was a 75 horse and put on my rebuild 80's Bass Tracker, it would move the boat across the water all day with good fuel economy at 26MPH. You could hit 32, but it guzzled fuel at that speed like you wouldn't believe, where 26 gave you and easy peasy all day fishing trip on our big lake.
*I started watching this at 4am and it's better than coffee, lol.*
OMG, we had one of these when I was a kid! It was a blast. The second cable on the throttle linkage is the governor! ( i figured out how to move it and do about 45mph) ..... did great doughnuts.
Mustie, bear in mind that these golf cart engines were designed to run only when moving in forward or reverse. There is no idle. When you stop, the engine stops, and when you push on the accelerator the starter motor moves you in whatever direction the selector lever is in until the motor starts. Also, normally the bed is hinged so it can be lifted to the rear to access the engine.
YES, I thought the bed should be hinged also ?
@@NoWr2Run the dude mentioned it was a bed that was welded on and he pondered cutting a hole/hatch in the back to access it. I’m guessing the old one wasn’t big enough
gas powered cart with the electric type move
@@mikimomo97 I know the old dude said about cutting an access hole but must have missed him saying it was welded on, THANKS. I wonder if it was modified ? The few I've seen had a dump bed.
@@djwchuckry Depending on the condition of the battery, the starter, and the centrifugal clutch, the starter may spin fast enough to start the cart moving. It won't move the cart fast. The point is the engine only starts when the accelerator is pushed and when released spark is killed. There is no in between, the engine is running only when moving in forward or reverse. That is also why there is no provision for adjusting idle on the carb, the engine will never be at idle.
Very familiar with those...my Aunt had one. Stock they do not idle. You are correct, the gas pedal is on/off/throttle. I never remember choking my Aunt's even when cold but her's was A LOT less tired. Most of those do not lead easy lives and go through hell but they are good bases for engine swaps.
Paul is the real "slippers" !
You have tought me so much Mustie. Thanks keep on doing what you're doing

3 certainties in life. Death, taxes, and Mustie finding an old toy to bring back to life.
No 4 things you can vote after you die.
Must1, I had a 89 just like that body style. Rebuilt the motor too. The weird reason I'm writing is the mustang. You see one of the previous owners had put two chrome mustangs one each side of my cart. They were OEM from Ford. I guess he had worked at a Ford plant when he got them. Probably worth some money nowadays. Its just weird that your cart is about the age as the one I had, we both rebuilt the motors and they both had mustang emblems on them. To find the year just look on the serial emblem. Good stuff and thanks!
Keith from MN.
E-Z-Come, E-Z-Go. Let's hope there's hope for this plucky little motor.
Bismillah!
LMAO @ 16:15, major grindage, yet zero eye protection! Good luck with that in the future!
My parents have one of those. That's about how it sounds. And it barely moves. I don't believe it idles when your foot is off the gas. Take your foot off and it shuts off.
Idles when your foot is “on” the gas.
Right there with you. 10am, cozy rainy morning, working last say untill 4 day weekend. Life's good!
The previous owner beat the daylights out of that rig!
And claimed to have gotten a speed ticket while driving it 😄
How do you know!!! That thing sat along time, and that alone does no good for machinery
@@Frank-Thoresen well it was from the wife... I think that counts ahhaa.
@@aarongrabowski5620 He said he thought it was running without oil in the beginning......that will trash a 2 stroke in a minute.
maybe the compression is low because the valves are sticking open (wink-wink).
Those little EC253 engines are generally pretty tuff . Ive rebuilt quite a few of them parts are getting harder to get now days . A lot of people are doing motor swaps on them and foregoing the reverse .And just an aside all of those are doggy the timing is set straight up at 0 degrees so it will start in both directions
Take the cylinder off and take it to a machining shop with the piston, and Im sure they can re-bore it and give you a piston to match. Worked for me on an old Yamaha DT50 not too long ago

For 20 years at my job at the university, we had many ez go carts. We sometimes raced and with the governor they wouldn’t go over the 20 mph speed limit. I hooked up a string to the carb and occasionally would pull it to out run the new student employees, much to their surprise. I didn’t do it too often because it reved it up so much I thought it would blow. Couldn’t destroy my ride!

I've definitely watched too much Forged In Fire. When he was cutting the access hole, all I could think was "Well, that's some nice hard steel."

Man you need a homemade exhaust extractor
Yeah, a garage sale shop vac sitting outside and a long hose coming inside would go a long way towards preserving your lungs and not be too loud maybe.
I thought of doing one with one of those cheap 1hp dust collectors from harbor freight, but I don't know how effective it would be with a big length of hose...
@@andrewsobek2386 As long as the cubic feet per minute of the vacuum is greater than the cubic feet per minute of the engine exhaust, it should take all the fumes outdoors.

Yours looks a lot like my 1988 EZ-GO. I can't say for sure on a year but it looks nearly identical. The engine is a Robin and I think it's made by Fuji Industries. If you check out Buggiesgonewild, they've got a ton of info on keeping these running. If you've ever got spark problems, there's a slick writeup on converting the ignitor over to work with an older style GM HEI ignition on BGW.The one I have was seriously put through the mill when I got it. I've eliminated the oil pump, governor, and throttle switch and I rebuilt and replaced all sorts of stuff. You'd be surprised at how much neglect and abuse these things will take and still continue to operate. Mine was thrashed but it still ran. I have it running and stopping reliably. Still a little loose on the steering. I run the engine on 100:1 fuel oil mix. I think you can go even thinner but I like to see a little bit of smoke. I have a goodly amount of video on bringing mine back from near death but they're pretty crappy videos. Still, I've been through just about the entire machine. If ever I can help the venerable Mustie Burnsides, I should be honored.

Mines got a better one it leaves about a qourt per week of driving its a 4 stroke also
I volunteer at a music festival and always end up as the golf cart mechanic :-) the trick I found is to put the direction switch in the middle for neutral, but to get it to run, there's a little switch you need to push up, which normally drops down in the middle position and stops it from running.
Oh, and you can put a bit of string on the throttle and pull it to override the governer :-)
I've got a motor for it. I'll send it to you.
