20 mins into this very insightful, thought provoking video and I found myself asking…WHY are we (y’all) buying luxury? If luxury doesn’t equal quality, what are you paying for? Are you simply paying for the name? And is it worth $5K, $10K, $50K to simply wear a name? Real question.
I have an expansive collection of well over 100 handbags. I started my small handbag collection during the pandemic. I counted them last week and I have more than 75 small bags in my collection. In the past four years, I’ve purchased 75+ small bags. (That kind of blows my mind!) My older handbag collection is mostly Brahmin. My small handbag collection is a mix of various designers (Tory Burch, Coach, Michael Kors, Kate Spade)…none of them are luxury.
I started adding up the money spent. I started with Kate Spade. I have 26 Kate Spade bags, each bag is on average $500. My Kate Spade collection is about $13K. So for the price of one luxury bag, I purchased 26 high quality, genuine leather designer bags.
I’m not criticizing anyone’s purchasing choices, and I don’t want anyone to judge mine either. But I challenge all of us to question the reason behind our purchases. I bought 26 Kate Spade purses, not because they are Kate Spade but because they are cute. I love the bright colors. I love the creative design styles. I love the novelty and whimsy.
I’ll end with my first question. Is it worth $5K, $10K, $50K to simply wear a name?

This is why I choke whenever a person points fingers at SHEIN and all high street brands or Chinese brands to excuse why they shop luxury. Most of these brands do exactly what you accuse SHEIN and others of doing. Shop luxury for a different reason, not because you care about humanity. Because if people truly cared, we would do our homework about how we end up with those iPhones and luxury items. I love luxury, but I know you are investing in the name brand for the most part. I saved up money for a few months to buy a ZP, but it got scratched on the third day. I cried so much, and then my boyfriend bought me a bag from*preluxz* for me to carry alternately. Anyway, there are so many bags on the street, so as long as others can't see it, I think it's fine. The thought is there.

The issue is though, it's not as black and white as people make it to be. Chinese made has become an umbrella term and all China factories aren't same and brands do make items in various places not just China not to mention different factories within China will use different methods and such...its not all slave labor and sweatshops, you do have regular workers as well. These things have to be specific.. u also have different level of quality with the items as well...that said most people don't know where their tech and such cone from...same with those obsessed with climate change and eco items...many don't know how their items are made and what goes into it...to be fair to those folks who think they are buying an item because it isn't abuse labor that made ir...so I wouldn't say people dont care, most just don't know. As for buying an item I do it for the art and design not for brand name, as well ad use of item and to a degree the quality...but I do get why the sheins get more heat than even the luxury brands though.

Every time a big company gets called out for abusive labour practices, they go to their failsafe answer of 'we used a third party contractor' and that they didn't know what was happening. In truth they are well aware of these practices, a few years ago it was shown that D&G and Versace had clothing made in North Korea under problematic conditions. They know that consumers don't care.

They ARE using 3rd parties though...they not the ones running the China factories 😅 Even if they start out with rules ,people don't get China gonna do whatever it wants to make more money and cut costs...its not just these brands the "partners" want to make money too.

For the past 4 or 5 years, black female content creators have been complaining about their treatment at the luxury shows, lack of inclusion, lack of respect and lack of fair pay yet still continue to do these Fendi Hermes Dior Gucci hauls pushing outrageous consumerism on the young women who look like them. Ive realized there is a soul selling that’s happening in Content Creation that hopefully the black women in the audience can realize and steer away from expeditiously.

So many luxury brands are now mass-produced. Not to mention the markup that is absolutely grotesque. I honestly never understood how someone could consciously price and item three or four times the price of what it's worth just to make a buck (actual several million bucks).
And even though I don't shop luxury retail, I'm also aware that the markup on clothing is everywhere. So as I walk through the aisles of my TJ Maxx, Marshalls, etc I'm still very aware that the item I'm holding probably cost much less than what I'm about to pay for it, I at least have the security of knowing It's just a $50 pair of jeans and not a $500 pair of jeans. Is there really a difference? Perhaps there is, but that's left up to the consumer to choose.

I totally disagree with what you said about Hermes their brand they sell a product. And it shouldn’t be based on a person’s attitude I believe 1000% that they were forcing people to buy things in order to get the bag that they want. If we’re gonna be honest about it and they did not want certain people purchasing their bags. so if they had to sell them, they would make them purchase more things and that’s why they’re being sued.

Excellent video. I love that you said that the worker treatment at Dior’s third-party manufacturer is what “got you.” It got me too! Cassie Thorpe made the point that when we shop luxury we expect fair worker treatment to be taken care of. I can’t express how the Dior story took the wind out of my sails. I just can’t do it anymore. I have been working my way up to a “no buy” year. This news accelerated my no-buy efforts.

Yep, a collapse in integrity/quality in order to meet the huge revolving door demand these days. Being in my sixties and having bought luxury since I was twenty four, I have really observed changes in the high end markets and also the (continuous) ridiculousness in price increases now. I miss the old days.
According to my online source, In 1955, a Chanel classic flag bag was $250. In 1990, $1,150, and in 2021, $8,800.
I remember walking into Chanel-Paris (rue Cambon) in the mid 1980s and buying a limited edition (only available in France) black quilted leather single flap, gold chain, and double CCs (one in plated 24 carat gold and the other in a silver metal), and paying around the equivalent of $685 due to the currency exchange rate at the time. If that same bag were created now, it would probably be more than 10 times the price and would also probably be getting price increases twice a year.
I wish I hadn't sold my bag. But, it eventually went to someone who really wanted it and couldn't afford to buy a Chanel bag at the retail U.S. prices. Plus, the person wanted to to pass it down to her first-born child. She considered that bag as her push gift to herself.
Over the decades of going to Paris annually, I would wait until I got there to buy high end bags and the annual price increases were not astronomical. And I don't remember twice a year price increases on the design houses from which I was purchasing, either then or in more recent years.
I haven't bought Chanel in many years. I bought it quite regularly in the 1980s and 1990s; jewelry, clothing, etc, and am basically done. Plus, the pieces back then were so well made that one didn't need to replace them.
As for Chanel clothing, I still have my Chanel suit in wool boucle, jacket and matching skirt. I bought the suit brand new in a Northern European country where I spent summers annually. One of the well-known luxury boutiques was going out of business and the suit was marked down to around the equivalent of $350. When the tax deduction was added, the price came down to around $286. I still have the suit and the jacket alone now, would most likely run in the $2,500- $3,000 category pre-owned price range and the skirt in a different price range. About three years ago, I saw on UA-cam, a vlogger in a Chanel boutique and in the background noticed a (recreated) suit like mine, and also orange. I wondered what the price was. I took a screenshot of the page and sent it to a couple friends and they were amazed at the similarity of the new version compared to my mid-1980s original.
    Greetings from Los Angeles

A part of the made in Italy, is also that the factory is in Italy but the workers are from different parts of Asia and they pay them little as well. So the Italian artisans are getting undercut as well and losing those contracts.

I know a person that knows an apprentice in Italy. He bought me back 4 bags that google reverse states are Hermes Kelly and Birkin’s. The only difference of course is there isn’t a name on the hardware/leather and the apprentice used a machine vs hands to sew the bags. I was 😳 shocked when I seen those bags. I got stopped on 5th ave by a woman wanting to inquire about the mini Kelly dup so I guess she was also fooled LOL. It’s horrible that I still purchase all the Chanel Les Exclusif line with that crazy price increase pre vs post panny.

$60 for a leather handbag can't be real.. I'm a fashion designer. There's just no way it could be that small for the total cost maybe just the sewing because they're making so many pieces at one time. but also you're not just paying for the cost of the bag... You're paying for the rent on all their locations, marketing budget, influencers, employees, packaging, fashion shows, everything is in the cost of those items.. I've been really trying to figure out the cost of the apparel collection I'm working on. It's such a difficult thing, but I'm going into the designer price point because it's just too hard to compete on price with Zara, H&M and Shein, etc. I can't afford to produce so many items at one time. However as far as Chanels' quality.. if you pay more you should get more for it, because those prices are ridiculous.

It absolutely can be. Do you realize the cost of these bags? I used to design exotics and the cost for a leather handbag is probably no more than 25-30 on the high end. The amount of leather they use is maybe 10.00 hardware maybe another 5.00, of course exotics are a bit higher. Trust me most things cost less than 50.00 to make including labor in less developed countries

I've always felt that the workers that we don't see are not in the best workplace conditions. I hope that children are not being pulled into these "sweatshops." Just because we don't see it doesn't mean it's not happening.

But it does have an air of Gucci to it as well. Both things can be true. Maybe Gucci was replicating old Valentino. Look at it like that at the end of the day, I really don’t care as long as it looks good. The quality is good and it adds character to the designs.

She is a black UA-camr named So Anesu. I have found brands that I will happily purchase because the old houses have LOST THE PLOT and are taking their customers for A RIDE! If they using sweatshop labor then the cost will go down...but law of supply and demand rules...even more than capitalism, its a physics thing...they could have started out using workers in Italy but to keep up with amounts they gotta outsource to China...The question is Do these brands control how their China factories are ran? As for the Chanel issue...with the other brands some quality is still there Chanel quality is a mess...U have people saying they fakes and its holding up more than the real bags...thats weird and their prices are craziest. Not sure sure if the brands can control what their partnered factory in China does, that's the big issue there.

I am glad you came on to make this video because it seemed like most people just jumped on Dior and it is a bigger picture. Because you have a background in the industry, I think you can speak from a more informed point of view. I think that the bags are definitely not the price they charge, but I think they someone exaggerated the price from 50+ dollars to 5000 dollars. I think there is a story for every brand. We just have not heard them all. So for people who just want to call out Dior because it may not be their favorite brand, need to research all of the brands they like.

💯💯 Let's be real, all brands are for profit and most will do things that would be damaging to their brand. The moral of this story is to stay informed as shoppers, that way we make better decisions. Thank you for your comment and happy Wednesday.

Another hit in the park video. Yes! I’m glad you’re talking SHIT! About brands that needs to be talked shit about. The truth must be told. Regular people those of us who don’t have $5000 + to toss around. Is not excited to purchase anything from brands doing dumb and on unethical shit. If I do a video on this topic I’ll definitely tag you :)

In regards to Chanel, I’m so glad that I already have my Jumbo Classic Flap. I searched for years for a vintage large square and finally found it. I’ll continue to purchase Chanel but I’ll stick to vintage, pre-loved. I was shocked when they went forward with insanely high price increases at the height of the pandemic. In bad taste - it showed that they were tone deaf to the issues affecting their consumers.

How about thinking more of the mid-range luxury brands. i.e. Tory Burch or Staud Tod's real quality leather goods?

The comparison of old Chanel bags quality to the new ones is reminding me of my YSL bag. Got the bag less than a year ago, wore it 3 times & had to send it to YSL for repairs. The “leather” started peeling crazy! Around the piping of the bag & in multiple other areas etc. When contacted them they said they can fix to the best of their abilities & will take 5-7 months to repair.🙄.
I have aldo, shein, coach(my coach bags leather are great) bags that I’ve had for way longer, my Lv never full is 6 yrs old & 1 of my most used bag & not experiencing this. To say the least they “repaired” it in 2 months, replaced the YSL logo buckle, and rewrapped the “leather” I guess. I won’t be purchasing another YSL. I’ll stick to my coach, shein, & other brand mixtures. I mix cheap & expensive, not going nuts for luxury items that are insanely overpriced. They are claiming inflation as if it’s not affecting us all. The products have declined & price have increased.
I have two Chanel items a sneakers & a sandals, I like them. I also love their Chanel chance fragrance(pink bottle). I also have a Chanel in my house(my oldest daughter name lol who likes Chanel items) & a Dior (youngest daughter) who has a Dior item or 2 that she got as gifts.

Too many fashion lines clothing aren’t reflecting much creativity. Boxy cuts unflattering for a women’s body. Are they computer generated designs? Is so, they have little respect of their customers.

No to Chanel because the quality and they’re just not worth it anymore. Overtime everything increases but not that much and then the quality goes down to me that stupid. You pay more for less quality and good conscience I couldn’t not a will not do it . there are so many other brands you can buy if it’s just about beautiful handbags. I love handbags I don’t care about the status but a beautiful handbag. It’s just amazing to me.. And it completes an outfit and they’re just too many other brands to utilize. And if you really think about it, there are tons and tons of people that have Chanel’s just like the other handbags so it’s not really exclusive anymore. That ships long time ago if they were doing this for the exclusivity, they missed the opportunity long ago. Everywhere I go I see people with Chanel at this point is so different than Louis Vuitton or Saint Laurent

I spent $5000 for my Lady Dior for my 50th birthday. I love the bag and the craftsmanship.
I’m so disappointed to know about their work conditions. Dior had one of the best customer service according to most of my friends. I always had such a great experience with that company .
I’ll definitely have to reconsider purchasing anymore Dior bags. As for Chanel; I’m done . lol I’ll just continue to use their beauty products but as far as purchasing anymore bags ; it’s a hard “ NO”
    Great video

to be honest. If you produce at cost and remove the logo, the luxury market really isn't that expensive. The mark is about 80% of the actual price. But the fact that you are*preluxz* buying an image and showing off your taste to make them think you are richer than you are is a very good thing to do.

I love the design, but I don't have the budget. So I bought the *preluxz* bag. Made from high quality legal snakeskin made by local Indonesian artists. From now on I never want to buy any luxury goods.

But I really did enjoy this video and your perspective on fashion and what these brands are doing the directions they’re going into and agree with most of the things she said. it was really refreshing to see someone being honest about these brands and fashion.

I like the direction that Valentino is going into and when I went back to look at some of the old Valentino looks. This new collection is a reflection of old Valentino. But it does have an air of Gucci to it as well. Both things can be true. Maybe Gucci was replicating old Valentino. Look at it like that at the end of the day, I really don’t care as long as it looks good. The quality is good and it adds character to the designs.
