Exactly what my bro in law said, a very mixed bag, SF soldiers. Joe seems so timid and not archetypal beefcake, yet is one of the most highly trained soldiers on the planet. Respect

I was in the same troop as Joe down at Lympstone. He was just a nice unassuming guy. Am not surprised he made a good fist of things. Well done mate.

So he went into the recruitment office, saying he wants to join the RAF, the recruiter, who was an RM asked how his maths was, he replied not good. So the RM recruiter said had he heard of the RM's, give them a try, their recruitment office is down the road?
Then he does 8months RM training, THEN the RM sniper course, which is 4 months long, then tells his Squadron SM he wants to put his papers in for SF. His SM says no but still puts his papers in anyway?
Your armed forces time starts from 18 so by his account he did less than 1 YEAR in CDO unit and was allowed to go on selection?!

No I think he served a year before going on selection. He went on the sniper course and then went on tour to Iraq so that’s probably 11 months. 4 months sniper course, 6 month tour and probably a month or two in between each of those. So by the time he actually went on selection he probably already served for a year, but still that’s ridiculously early to go straight on selection. Usually you’d join a unit and serve for 3-4 years at the earliest for some people.
