I Regret Leaving NYC... Here's Why

  • Miami was cool, but there's no way I can live here on a full time basis. My main issue is that its just not nyc. That doesnt mean miami vs nyc is a one sided competition, but it does mean that there are things i'm just used to as someone who's been a new yorker for over 10 years that just dont happen on collins in South Beach Miami. That being said i will definitely be back to visit because miami is so close to NYC its like a bus ride away (time wise) since the flight is so short. Check out todays moving to nyc vlog and let me know what you think!

I loved NYC; miss it sometimes. I lived there from birth till I was like 29 or something. SInce then I've lived in Seattle (nice place but opportunities called me elsewhere), the gulf coast of FL (wasn't a fan of the climate though I liked the beach & Disneyworld), & Tennessee near Nashville (really love the southern charm). Now I've settled in a really, really, REALLY small town in Kentucky. I do and I don't miss NYC; NY is so convenient and lively and has so much to do but it's also nice having land & space for a huge veggie garden, and a mortgage of only $650 per month which is less than it cost me to rent a tiny studio back in Brooklyn in the late 80s haha... still can't get over it. I'm probably going to make this my permanent home base now as I sail towards retirement age but when I miss those big cities and different scenery, that's what road trips are for.

NY has beaches as well: Coney Island Beach in Bklyn & Orchard Beach in the Bx come to mind. If you want to get a Zip car or take the LIRR you can even make it out to Jones Beach on Long Island or some of the other beaches out there. I lived in Miami for a number of years. "Pro" traveler tip, Cash. Tie a bandana or ribbon or scarf around each suitcase handle so that it is immediately recognizable from a distance as it comes around the luggage pickup, so you can always identify your stuff much quicker. For Violet, maybe a scrunchie or a hair tie would work well! ( Thank me later. 😏😂)

It snowed for several days while I was there, and it didn't really impede on traffic or my ability to walk around the city. The worst of it was kept out of the way, or flattened down by the number of people walking on it. I will say that the snow piles that accumulated definitely got to insane levels!

People who are bilingual just quickly switch into English, because they can't be bothered to wait

When I left NYC after ten years, I missed parts of it, for certain. I missed the food (especially pizza, diners, and bagels). I missed lower-east-side dives, and being on the very pulse of the music scene. But ... I didn't miss the absolutely ridiculous, despicable rents, the crime (folks were killed/robbed in my Bed-Stuy hood all the time). I also didn't miss the preposterous (and ever-rising) costs of everything either ($15 for a pack of smokes? Nearly $20 for American breakfast with juice and coffee?). As I said before, Miami is rough and expensive, but I bet if you gave the Tampa Bay area a true shot, you would love it. If you can live without some of the cultural perks of NYC, and take the heat/humidity of June through August, the coastal counties (Pasco, Hernando, and Citrus) are a safe, great place to raise kids, with great schools, reasonable rent/property prices, and LOTS of cheap/free things to do for adventure for the whole family! And less than an hour drive to Tampa/St. Pete/Clearwater, with all the big city shopping/food/entertainment you could want. In fact, food is great everywhere, and reasonable too. Especially seafood! The cost of living is VERY reasonable and, as you pointed out, all you need is a car. BTW, real estate is a huge industry there. So, I'd think you'd do really well there. The only real adjustment is having to drive to things instead of walking/taking the train.

Boston is pretty good without a car for the general area.

I'm from Texas. Every Adult in the household has a car 😅 I can't imagine not having one. Someone mentioned overthinking transportation and thats why they prefer not to have car... that's funny because for me having a car means not having to think about how to get to where I wanna go. Just matters what you're used to :)

    • @Redhollow

@@annettey4799 Twas me that said that.
I associate cars with worrying about insurance, gas, parking, traffic, tolls, navigation, maintenance, etc. In the city I just get on my bus/train, grab my phone or book, and just chill til I get where I'm going. I find the latter to be 100% hassle free (and ofc more environmentally friendly), to the point where I've grown attached to the lifestyle.
Such luxuries don't seem to exist outside of metropolitan areas though, so it's not like I don't understand why people outside the city prefer to have a car (particularly not having to share space with anyone while traveling is a nice bonus), but owning a car here would just be added anxiety AND you lose out on that time to just unplug your brain without causing a literal accident.

Props to your wife for being cool with all the setups you have to do for these. Glad you enjoyed your time down here. Hope you got to experience some of the great stuff Miami has on the other side of the bridge. The driving here is definitely a drag.

Hey Cash!! It's great you and your family had some much deserved time off and away from the hustle and bustle of NYC!!! Miami was an interesting change of pace but I couldn't really imagine you living and doing your fab vids from there!!! I haven't received any notifications from you in the last few weeks and thought it was due to the havoc of Verizon installing 5G!!! My landline AND cell are affected terribly from this process!! So over the delay with them finishing up! But glad my device hasn't erased all the vids I saved to my phone and still need to see - but due to a long three week timeframe of continual, extreme fibromyalgia flare ups I was very limited in doing anything but now I'm back and so are you !! Let the ENTERTAINING vids begin again!! Now before I start watching the episodes I saved, first I gotta check out your escape to Miami after seeing this one!! And it was very obvious from your words and demeanor : there's NO PLACE like home!!🏘️👍

Your trip looked like fun and your wife and Violet are delightful.

If you know someone who wants to move to Florida to retire or escape high State taxes a good place to consider is Jacksonville, FL since it has four seasons (USDA Zone 8b, 9a Mediterranean & subtropical) and is near the coast.
Since it sits in cooler waters and has a cooler climate than Southeast Florida, hurricanes that pass through the Caribbean are more likely to stay at sea longer and begin curling toward the U.S. when they get up to North and South Carolina. My sister lived there for years and said it was nice. There aren't many alligators in urban Jacksonville.
