I am such a Gouldian!!! Thanks for posting. He and the Goldbergs are my meds...
I have Gould's original recording of this piece, and then the later, more contemplative disc. They're both so beautiful.
One of my favorite things to do is to sit and listen to the later recording late at night, when it's quiet out and I can turn out the lights and close my eyes to remove all distractions. Gould hums along with his playing, and it's like you're sitting right there with him as he plays. It's deeply moving.
This man lives forever.
so beautiful it moves me to tears
Please don't remove these beautiful videos after the DVD is completed. They are a gift to humanity. Thank you.
Gleen Gould..You will be legend everytime.!!
Only a few minutes in, but so far Mcferrin and Thile are clearly referencing the 1981 recording. Why do you follow them immediately with cuts of the 1955 recording?
Can hardly wait for this DVD.
43°41'53.66"N 79°22'39.50"W is Glenn's grave.
Coordinates taken by me standing above his grave.
This is awesome! Can't wait for the movie.
IMHO: The volume of the music should not be reduced so much when the people start talking.
OMG! That piano has no player!!!
I love Gould. Thanks for sharing.
I wanted to cry when the piano played and Gould didn't sit there
The only thing that bothers me is that they show the old Goldberg recordings while in my humble opinion the 1981 recordings are really superior compared to the 1955 recordings.
I feel the same. The later recording somehow showed me a person who went through many experiences, and so calm in his playing. And usually it is very hard to play slow music and not losing listener's attention, but in his playing, it just keeping my attention all the way through. I love it.
바흐가 300년의 시공을 넘어 우리에게 의미를 주는 모습...감독은 어떻게 이야기 해야할지를 잘 보여주고 있다. 감동적인 영상!
What an awesome project...! Michael knows well how to tell a story on Bach to us living in 21C accrossing 300 year space & time!

Is the Gould version the one that Hannibal Lecter listens in Silence of the Lamb? I am very much looking forward to this movie.
I think Chris Thile is talking about the 1st variation from the 1981 recording based on the tempo and feel he is describing. Then they play the 1955 recording. Come on Michael Lawrence, whats the deal?
whatthecello42 indeed
if bach ever had been able to play on the modern pianos of today, he would sound like glen gould's playing. If we ever had the chance to record beethoven's playing, it would sound like william kempf.
@AndyMajia actually im guessing it would've sounded like bach intended it to... not modern interpretations
Funny how an actual Gould performance first shows up only for the credits. Great clip nonetheless!
What is the music at the end?
It's the fugue in D major (no.5) from the Well-Tempered Clavier, book 1. (BWV 850)
It's the version he listens to in the book. The movie has a different performance.
@philateliceun I so much agree with you. I got both and the 81 is better both quality and the way he plays it. A lot more clear in the phrasings.
what is this piano who plays alone ???? it's just SCARY !!!! XD
god save us from music critics...
