  • Vocals are just as important as any other sound in your song. So it is essential to know how to properly edit them. Many people think that all you need to do is add a reeverb on it and it will sound awesome. In some cases yes... but that is what this tutorial is not about. I want to show you how to really clean up that vocal and make it sound as close to studio quality as possible.

    I literally just bought FL Studio and had no experience or knowledge of anything that had to do with music software. In 10 minutes I just managed to make my voice sound phenomenal. I wish I could tell you how much I love you right now.

      Bin, be careful as most of what is presented here has some serious omissions, and in some cases totally misses the point of the tool and how to use it. The chain as presented departs heavily from industry best practices, compression is NOT done correctly even remotely, and there are glaring deficiencies in the way the Parametric EQ is being utilized. Plus de-essing on Maximus shown here was NOT calibrated correctly or even used to find the right frequencies (which also wasn't really needed as usually if you compress using best practices you often also need to de-ess). Take a look at my comments for more details. Hope that helps!

    Nice video thanks bro! some tips helped :) btw you can just send vocals to edison, then theres a "detect noise" tool it looks like a brush, highlight a session with no vocals, click the brush, click detect noise, then get ALL the vocals and hit the brush again then hit accept. This clears out a lot of sounds!

    • @rohanfirminger9182
      @rohanfirminger9182 6 років тому

      Be careful, Deurys, most of this video is completely wrong. Check out "Firewalk" or FL Studio Guru, they will outline the correct way to do things. Re Edison, be careful using the denoise tool, you CAN do damage to the vocal if you don't know how to use it. Best way to check how much you've removed from the "good parts" of a vocal is to listen to the signal that is being but. If you hear ANYTHING from the vocal that should stay there, you've gone too far. Hence back the mix back, or recalibrate the settings/EQ (depends which view you're working from too). This is not trivial, so best of luck.

  • @rohanfirminger9182
    @rohanfirminger9182 7 років тому +21

    Maximus: This is NOT how to use de-essing in Maximus:
    De-essing in Maximus needs to be calibrated correctly and set up specifically to address sibilants etc using the correct frequency and width. This is misleading for users. Here is how to correctly calibrate Maximus for de-essing:
    On the screen located to the left on maximus, the highlighted diagonal line is essentially where the threshold is. Any signal that hits this line is compressed. Hence again you need to adjust the input so that ONLY the desired peaks at the “de-ess” frequency are reduced just right (Goldilocks). Not too hard and not too soft.
    The adjustable horizontal/sloping line essentially works like a ratio. At 1:1 it’s at a 45 degree angle. The flatter (horizontal) it gets, the higher the ratio, and the more vertical it gets the lower the ratio (so gentler compression).
    The default de-esser is set to be horizontal meaning it’s working like a limiter. Any signal moving past the center vertical line will be heavily compressed, and in theory the volume should not exceed this level.
    Hence, it’s critical to set up the frequency band on the far right and listen to the vocal to find the exact frequency the “S’s and T’s” are that you want to reduce the volume on. This is typically done at the end of the chain, post other compression and EQ. The width of the frequency to be treated also needs to be set.
    Once the frequency has been carefully set so only the "S" sound is dominant, then the input (gain) needs to be set so that only the “S” and “T” sounds are reduced, so the "S" sound for example should cross the horizontal line seen in the box on the left. This is important. Other sound signals should remain to the LEFT of the center line if possible.
    The default settings such as attack/release etc etc are probably OK, but if you want precision, getting these right to get exactly the best result you want is necessary. Usually you want fairly fast attack but may want to let some of the transient though, and the release should also be quick, but this needs to sound right. Releasing too early, and the end part of the “S” is heard and sounds odd, or too long, and it compresses other parts of the vocal that occur after the S is long gone, again not often desirable depending on what you’re aiming for.
    Maximus has a lot going on, so familiarizing yourself with all the controls really helps, and there is a lot packed into the tutorials and the manual that can flesh this out.

      man, really. if you see yourself good at music producing and stuff just please make your own videos on your own channel, i'm sure it'll help WAY MORE people instead of just spam comment on other youtubers video.

    • @rohanfirminger9182
      @rohanfirminger9182 7 років тому +2

      Hi Krozzle, You know, I've been thinking about doing exactly that. I keep putting it off, but hey, I keep seeing podcasts/videos etc that look great, but the content is completely wrong, and actually gives the wrong information. This includes how to play guitar for example, or sing (I know a top LA vocal coach, and we are amazed at the crazy things people put out there), and certainly in how to mix/master, just like this one.
      My main concern is if these are not challenged, many people struggling to find out how to mix/master are actually being set back.
      How advanced in this space are you Krozzle? I'd expect a knowledgeable person in this space would be in firm agreement with my points. If you are an accomplished mixer/engineer/producer, surely you'd agree that in any medium, be it in the boards/chat space like Gearsluts, youtube videos, and any other form of presenting knowledge, that glaringly wrong advice to beginners and intermediate people trying to develop their skills should be informed, shouldn't they?
      Respectfully I see all sorts of "how to" videos across the board ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, and when you get well presented but incorrect postings, more knowledgeable/experts often comment to alert people and set the record straight. That is precisely what I've done here. Judging by the large numbers of views, that's potentially thousands of people being pointed in the WRONG direction.
      Thanks though for the inspiration. I recently moved and am almost finished kitting out my new studio. I literally have built and am building some acoustic panels and setting all my gear up. Once I get that done, I think I'll address compression and EQ specifically in FL Studio, and how to use Edison etc in some imaginative ways. :) (Oh no, I type fast, LOL, sorry for the long response)

      IF you're serious about mixing/recording/mastering, etc, THEN I'd recommend getting a decent audio interface to suit your needs and match with your PC/Mac etc. If you're NOT serious, the you can try working with your native systems.
      So, if you are serious about your sound production, then while USB interfaces will work, but if you're thinking of developing for the long term, I'd look into Thunderbolt 2 or better interfaces with at least 4 inputs if you're looking to record with up to two mics and have say two instruments such as electric/bass guitars at once.
      To use a thunderbolt interface though requires you have a Mac or a thunderbolt capable PC. The reason why these are better is that these can be around 30-40 times faster in terms of latency than for example USB 2.0.
      Latency (how much delay there is from when a sound is made till it is processed and you can hear it back while recording live) makes a huge difference.
      Personally I use a Resident T4 and have used many of the well known USB Audio interfaces. Honestly it's the best "bang for your buck" I've ever spent. Absolutely sublime sound, and honestly, inbuilt audio on motherboards or generic sound cards are often not great for DAW work. Made a huge difference when I started out to get an Audio Interface. If you're serious about your music/audio production, even at base level, I'd recommend getting a decent Audio Interface.
      The T4 you may find for around $250 USD for example, and there are a whole host of other options. The thunderbolt versions though can range upwards around $800 USD, while the USB 3.0 (much slower than the Thunderbolt AIs, but for light loads will work) are around the same price-point as the T4. Note, if going Thunderbolt on PC, make sure you get a motherboard capable of thunderbolt, and these often require a specific dedicated PCIe x4 card (usually slots below the main GPU) to run, so please do your due diligence and research these.

    @4:54 Yeah, that's what the gain knob is for dude. When we compress, you turn up the gain knob to retain what you lost. That's the point. If you want more compression, you turn down the threshold and turn up the gain to get the volume lost through compression. It's so we can have a balanced signal by turning everything loud to the quiet parts and then turning it back up so everything including the quiet parts is turned up with it. Lol

    • @rohanfirminger9182
      @rohanfirminger9182 6 років тому +1

      LOL, Absolutely Chris! This guy just randomly fiddles with things with absolutely no idea what's he's doing. Got to give him his dues, he sounds so convincing. It's a shame he's actually misleading people and NOT helping them.
      There are some funny moments though, aren't there? Somehow he's decided the "red lines" in the parametric EQ are "unnecessary decibels", Bwhaaaaa LOL. Too funny... Cut what is probably a good signal, huh? But even funnier is he actually uses the mousewheel to reduce the width of the "cuts" to 0! LOL So they have NO effect! Hilarious!

    • @KREOGHOSTOFFICIAL
      @KREOGHOSTOFFICIAL 6 років тому +1

      i suppose at the end of the day it what works for him, but to my knowledge compressors don't work actually start to compressing until ratio hits around 2.2.1 maybe a little less but its somewhere in that range. also i believe a higher ratio like something after 5.0:1 is classed as limiting

    • @rohanfirminger9182
      @rohanfirminger9182 6 років тому +2

      KREO GHOST:
      This video is a tutorial isn't it? In which case it purports to be providing useful
      "How to" methods to OTHER people, right?
      Hence, since pretty much everything this guy says in this video displays a glaring lack of knowledge, which means he is essentially misleading viewers, actually should NOT be about what works for him.
      Re compression levels, anything above a 1:1 ratio provided the signal hits a threshold level to activate it, will compress (also attack and release play into this).
      Re limiting - depends on your settings and definition. Some see limiting as a "brick wall" max level, some may use 10:1 or 20:1 as a kind of limiting. There are a myriad of approaches.

    • @KREOGHOSTOFFICIAL
      @KREOGHOSTOFFICIAL 6 років тому +1

      Rohan Firminger why is there rules lol? He did it his own way a got a clean sound. Its not how I would do it but who gives a fuck. If he got the sound he wanted ain't that good enough? You guys who sit an play by the rules have the floppy mixes. There is a no one way to mix or to apply compression or any effect in the case

    • @chriswellz5993
      @chriswellz5993 6 років тому +1

      @KREO GHOST I'll explain.
      Okay. So we have rules not because we have to go by them. We have rules so we can understand what something does and then we can decide whether to bend them or break them. Rules are not regarded as strict instructions to follow, they're merely a means to get you to understand what something is, where you use it, why you should use it and how to use it. Whether you want to say "Good, I know what everything does and how it works, now let me throw a guitar amp on a fucking vocal because I know WHAT it's going to do to the vocal and I know what each parameter is going to do" is entirely up to you. In fact, I've put DeEsser plugins (something CREATED FOR VOCALS) on a cymbal to tame the highs. But I wouldn't have known to do that if I hadn't learned what and why things do what they do.
      So yes, we need rules, so we can choose to follow them or break them, as long as we know what the fuck they are to begin with. Walking in this engineering game shooting in the dark is only going to bring more time in trial and error...something that could take a few seconds or minutes if you had already known what it does. We need to teach efficiency to our education in engineering, not just "Here's a knob, don't know what it does, but yeah"

  • @tylerdurden6992
    @tylerdurden6992 7 років тому +3

    shouldnt you first compress and THEN Eq?

    • @rohanfirminger9182
      @rohanfirminger9182 7 років тому +1

      Depends, LOL. Generally for vocals the dominant practice is to use a high pass filter to cut unwanted bass upfront. For things like drums/percussion, some schools of mixing will apply EQ first then compress for example. With vocals it depends a lot on what you're trying to achieve.
      Often it's high pass first, compress generally, EQ, other effects, then compress sibilants and/or de-ess at the end. One way to de-ess is to target the higher frequencies with a LA2A style of compressor, but as shown here Maximus if you're running FL Studio or own it, can be set up to de-ess. That's usually at the end of the chain.
      For vocals that technically have problems, and/or were recorded in less than optimal conditions, may have specific problem frequencies you may want to cut before compressing. Hiss for example is a pain, so cutting this helps. The high pass and taking out lower frequencies you don't want really helps to reduce overhead, and compressors that are not frequency targeted will tend to trigger from the stronger bass levels, which can have undesired results, unless you calibrate a compressor to compress at mid/high frequencies.
      Horses for courses. I've changed the order to suit the vocal/style/quality of the recording. This becomes natural to work out the most effective approaches via direct experience. My advice is to keep pushing the envelope and experiment. Reality is the best teacher. Listen to various opinions, then try it out for yourself and build your own capabilities. Best way to develop. Hope that helps!

    • @chriswellz5993
      @chriswellz5993 6 років тому +1

      There's not right or wrong way to answer that question. Most people I've met told me to EQ first and then compress and then eq again and then compress again. If you have a vocal for example that was recorded with the proximity effect and then you compress, the compressor is reacting to the loudest frequencies in that vocal, which are the bassey ones since the proximity effect. So the compressor isn't affecting the part that matters, the mid range and highs. So you would have to EQ to clean up the bottom and then put a compressor on it.
      This is why it depends. What do you want the compressor to react to? You see what I'm saying?

    This guy is hilarious - for the parametric EQ he says to cut the "red lines" that are "in your face" LOL. Why? Oh, the great sage doesn't like red and wants to "reduce the decibels"... LOL Firstly this is nuts to just cut a frequency because a "red line" is there, but even more ridiculous is narrowing the cut to 0! That means you're doing NOTHING. LOL. Which is probably a good thing because cutting randomly is NOT a good idea. The only thing that the parametric EQ will do in this video is drop the low frequencies (again the slope and position seems to be random), and "raises the high" frequencies. But WHY do it there and like that without even examining the track and determining where and WHY to do this? Again, completely random, and totally misleading.
