Thank you for discovering Angelina. She is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on UA-cam, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted. (g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song. (h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time. (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying. Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.
What jumped out to me from the jump was,how focused and serious she was on this track at 9 years old, this wasn't some little girl messing around on the microphone. This was probably one of the best performances by a 9 year old ever,Angelina Jordan.
This Girl is amazing I think Angelina is not from this Planet she is from Planet Jazz ,Soul,Emotion, and Love❤❤❤my Favorit singer of all Time I love your voice so much prodigy girl out of this world absolutely amazing .I’m speechless.
Hi Hari 👋. Great reaction to 9 Angie. Makes you think what were we doing at 9. Also you should react to her singing "Fly me to the moon Acoustic " she was also 9 in that video too. You'll like Angelina's arrangement of it also. 🙂👍❤
Screamin Jay Hawkins (1956) , the original artist, was Angelina's inspiration for her arrangement. Jay's picture is on the candle she held up in the beginning, as if she's chaneling Jay. There's a great video of Hawkins on the Arsenio Hall Show on UA-cam that you should watch. While many have performed this song, only Angelina has come close to Hawkins' original.
You need to go watch the original Screaming Jay Hawkins sing this in 1956 and you will know where all this came from. She had studied him and then rewrote his lyrics and added his screams and yells she also arraigned all this including her hand written "Wishes" she wanted the band to do, this was the notes she gave to the band director in the beginning,, bu the end of this the band loved her and they all called her Boss. Many of the band members have done more music for her also
- The Barefoot Princess - (From her book, television and radio interviews, and podcasts made between 2014-2015. Includes excerpts from her diary made that day in 2012.) Why does Angelina sing barefooted? Angelina Jordan is known as "The Barefoot Princess" or "The Barefoot Princess of Jazz," amongst many other names. She always performs barefooted, whether in front of a live audience or during a studio performance. The story is that while living in the Middle East, at 6 years old, Angelina came across an orphaned girl, of her own age, sitting in the street, weighing people on a bathroom scale to earn money. Angelina said to herself, "I would like to share her life for one second to know what it is like to sit alone, wet, and damp, and barefoot in a corner of the street." Angelina could see the girl's bare feet were scarred and that it was cold outside, so she offered her own shoes to the girl. Little Angelina says that she really loved her shoes, as they were very nice and she knew she would miss them. But she saw the other little girl’s need for them, which outweighed her own desire to keep them. So she insisted the little girl take them. Angelina called her Princess, even though the girl said she didn't live in a castle, but the ruins of a building next to where she sat. After sharing their hopes and dreams, the little girl said of Angelina's wish to sing for the world, "You will become the one you dream of and when your dreams come true, you have to remember the poor children without shoes; and I will pray for you Angelina.” Later that day, 6 y/o Angelina wrote in her diary, "The world is very strange. Right then and there, I felt as if a door in my heart opened up, and it was filled with lots of lights. It was as if there was, from Earth to Heaven, a staircase. I climbed the stairs. To be able to do something for another human - it was such a big thing…hard to describe really.” From that point on, Angelina takes off her shoes, in honor of ‘Princess’ and all the other less fortunate children of the world, who are orphaned, hungry, or in want of even basic clothing. In 2015, at the age of 9, Angelina wrote a book about the encounter, as everyone continued to ask why she sang barefoot. Her grandmother, Mery Zamani, created the artwork for the book. So at 9, Angelina Jordan became the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina has performed alongside many other artists, raising attention and helping to raise over 21 million euros and millions of dollars for children in need.
It is truly a conundrum when we try to rationalize how it is possible that this tiny sweet-faced 9yo Norwegian girl can step up to a microphone, flip some switch within her, become this "beast-mode" version of herself (most probably named "AJ don't play"), deliver an extraordinary and musically and socially sophisticated performance, then just-like-that return to the pensive young lady once again... There aren't words for this! "I Put a Spell On You" has been covered many times and is recognized as a classic, yet almost never is the tone of the original 1956 "Screamin" Jay Hawkins version captured. This is because Hawkins was the original shock-rock guy (think Ozzy Osbourne-type craziness) and his style is difficult to emulate and also because his dated delivery is uncomfortable and stereotypical to our modern sensibilities. Yet Angelina respectfully sings his own song in a manner that exceeds his (Hawkin's image is on the candle she holds at the start of her video). You must go and listen to Hawkins' original (and throw in a couple of "famous" covers as well) to see the true genius in how AJ incorporates many of his vocal elements [usually omitted by most singers]. This shows another aspect of her musical IQ and arranging genius (not to mention her masterful control of her vocal instrument equaled by few others regardless of age). Hello again, Hari! Thanks a lot for an absolutely great 2nd reaction to Angelina 🙂 I've been looking forward to it for sure, and I think it's been like 3 weeks or something since your first. If I recall correctly, you don't upload THAT often, so I'm really happy that you came back to her relatively quickly. And I have to say that the wait was worth it. What I just saw from you is REAL appreciation, it just can't be faked. Now I'm just looking very much forward to your NEXT reaction to her, and I pray a silent prayer that it will come sooner rather than later. After all, there is NO ONE like Angelina out there. I really mean that 🙂 Have a great weekend and take care, Hari! Much love from Norway ♥♥♥♥♥
Got a little behind, but I've been catching up on all the comments because I love reading them all. It's definitely felt like special moments reacting to AJ, still excited to see more from her catalogue! Really appreciate your awesome support :)
I have seen this 100s of times. Still amazes me. Barely 9 and does her own arrangements. Notice at 6:00 she goes up on the balls of her feet to shout that second "mine"
Many thanks for always providing a genuine and informative reaction. In addition, please educate viewers HOW to best show the artist love, which includes WATCHING every video on Angelina's Official and Cover Channels in their entirety, LIKING, SHARING, COMMENTING, and SUBSCRIBING to Angelina's Channels. Doing so will boost her analytics, and therefore UA-cam will recommend her videos to countless more people. Of course suggest viewers show the same love for your channel! Everyone please show love to both Angelina and the reactor! Peace and Love.
I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. We get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Decades and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Anyone who discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point. Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will always be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. That is astounding! And she is just 17 years old... That is unfathomable. She has already established her proficiency and incredible work ethic in this endeavor guided by an incredible family and professional support now surrounding her.
You just watched a Masterpiece! Destined to go down in Music History as the best performance by a 9 yr old, Period! Past, present & dare I say Future! I'd like to see anyone, young or old who can do a cover of this & with the justice it deserves as Angelina has done on every cover she does. ♥👣👸🏻
Really great reaction Hari, loved your enthusiasm for Angelina! Best reaction to this song I've seen in awhile, and I see them all trust me. Looking forward to sharing your journey with Angelina.
- Who is Angelina Jordan - Angelina is a Norwegian born child prodigy in music. She's a singer/ songwriter who's arranged over 180 covers and 5 originals, all since the age of 7. Angelina began singing at 18 months old. At 2, she began teaching herself how to sing, focusing primarily on the jazz masters of decades gone by. These are artists such as Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Etta James. She's also influenced by Amy Winehouse, Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, and Adele, to name a few. She's also been said to be the girl of 1,000 voices. Yet even though we can hear the phrasing and style she puts in the songs, it's always Angelina that we hear. At 7 years old, she auditioned for Norway's Got Talent. She was the last to audition. The judges had no idea who she was or what she could do. They saw a diminutive mussy haired, barefooted girl with her teeth still growing in. For her audition, she performed "Gloomy Sunday" from Billie Holiday. On TV-2, they've reported over 14 million views of this performance. This does not take into account the many hundreds of reactors showing this audition to millions more. Needless to say, Angelina went on to win the 2014 season of NGT shortly after her 8th birthday. The family was bombarded with requests for performances, interviews, and record label offers. They turned down 90% of the requests, as they insisted that Angelina should enjoy a normal childhood. That didn't stop Angelina from performing at select engagements around the world, singing for Heads of State, and even Barack Obama. She's spent time and worked with musicians such as Quincy Jones and Alan Walker. She first appeared on American television, The View, at 8 years old. Angelina auditioned for America's Got Talent The Champions at 13 years old. She made it just up to the final selection of the final 5 when she dropped from the competition. It wasn't that she wasn't good enough to be in the final 5, but it was because she refused to sign with an AGT affiliated label, should she win. She knew very well what production hungry labels could do to her music. She even turned down Disney. At 14, Angelina signed with Republic Records. Republic gave her complete artistic control as well as control over the performances she would make. Angelina is now 16 and lives in LA. She turned 17 on January 10, 2023, and will graduate from high school after the spring semester. From then on, she will embark on her full-time professional career. She's been working closely with Republic on her first album under their label. It's likely that it will drop shortly after her graduation.
Angelina was 9 years old in this performance -This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with the same band at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and gives them some instructions. There are English subtitles as the spoken language is Norwegian: ua-cam.com/video/SAkZDAXJA4E/v-deo.html
Welcome to the Angelina Jordan rabbit hole. I'm 71 years old and have been in it for the past three years. For many new AJ reactors the next step would be to check out her first performance on Norway's Got Talent at age 7. There she sings Gloomy Sunday in the style of her favorite singer Billie Holiday. If you want to start earlier you can see her raw talent and power in her first experience in a recording studio at age 6 singing the classic I Who Have Nothing. I Who Have Nothing at age 6 ua-cam.com/video/RjQZKBpVaes/v-deo.html Gloomy Sunday at age 7 ua-cam.com/video/d3gSho9yf88/v-deo.html
Yep, that's Angelina unleashed. Her soul and emotional authenticity is incredible. Great reaction, Hari! It might be fun for you to hear one of her originals now. She performed her songs 7th Heaven and Million Miles in a series of concerts this past summer at age 16 and Norwegian TV caught some footage. I'll link you to a handy fan edit that split the two performances, starting with 7th Heaven: ua-cam.com/video/_Bo88l1aFDI/v-deo.html
While I was reviewing the hey by j channel, I came across a broadcast like angelina jordan's biography, but I have to say that I thought I would complete the most important part missing. The video in the link I left is raw footage taken by Jordan's grandmother with a mobile phone. Grandma rents a studio for Angelina and this is Angelina's first studio experience. Angelina is 6 years old. ua-cam.com/video/RjQZKBpVaes/v-deo.html

- The Barefoot Princess -
(From her book, television and radio interviews, and podcasts made between 2014-2015. Includes excerpts from her diary made that day in 2012.)

👏👏
I only listen to a couple of singers and she's the top

Definitely been nice to have joined the AJ journey this past year! Still having fun going through it all :)
Thanks for the support and suggestion! Was definitely fun reacting to those as well, they were special :)

Her arrangement bro.

I'll definitely keep this playlist handy for future reactions! Thanks for the link and support :)
Hugely influenced by Billie Holiday but this has a nod to Nina Simone
Just a quick correction, with respect, the nod goes to Screamin J Hawkins. Nina Simones version is how many people cover it.
