My matesssss, I hopen you have all been very well. I've wanted to make this video for a long time, but it was honestly a pretty hard video for me to make and I kept pushing it off, but I decided enough was enough and just went for it.
Modern Baseball is such an important band for so many reasons that I won't get into because I talk about it in the video haha, but for real I hope you enjoy it. I decided to call this video Long Live Modern Baseball because I want to do my tiny part in helping preserve Modern Baseball's legacy, MoBo forever.
Modern Baseball consisted of Brendan Lukens, Jake Ewald, Ian Farmer, and Sean Huber. They formed in 2011, signed to Run For Cover Records in 2012 and put out thier debut album Sports in late 2012. MoBo has also released masterpieces such as You're Gonna Miss It All, Holy Ghost, The Perfect Cast EP, some splits, and incrediblr singles.
They put out classic songs with classic music videos such as: Your Graduation, The Weekend, and Rock Bottom. MoBo can do no wrong.
I'll love them forever, but I'm very self-aware that I'm incredibly biased...
Now, it's time for the feature presentation: Long Live Modern Baseball
I will thank you and eat a jolly rancher if you follow my brand on IG @matesclubusa
    thank you always
    Love you.

I've never actually put into words what modern baseball means to me, so here it goes. Mobo is my favorite band and they have been since the summer of 2015. I was 15 and only recently gotten into pop punk, and that's all because of my older brother who started introducing me to iconic bands like fireworks, state champs, man overboard, and so many others that are considered pop punk staples. Of course, I still love pop punk, but I don't find myself listening to some of those "old" bands anymore. Modern baseball is different through. From the moment I first heard your graduation, I knew it was something special. I was young and my music taste very much defined who I was, or at least who I wanted to be. In my head I was misunderstood and different and all of those cliches that pop punk kids tell themselves. But Mobo made me realize it was okay to be a little weird and different, without being resentful of a society that often chooses to alienate teenagers who like alternative music and the social scene surrounding it. Then, I got into a pretty bad accident that left me physically fine, but pretty emotionally traumatized. That sounds melodramatic, but what I went through was a lot for a teenager who was already struggling with unrecognized anxiety. Looking back on what my mental state was like afterwards is crazy, because I can't believe I survived what was going on in my own head. Modern baseball really helped me through it though, because it was angsty and funny and honest. I found myself in every word of every song, and I was stoked when they announced Holy Ghost. When that album came out I listened to it on repeat for what feels like forever. Every night before I fell asleep I would give it a full listen through, and I did that for months. That album truly changed my life for the better. It sounds super cliche, but for once in my short little life I felt like somebody else got what I was going through. And one fateful day they announced a tour that would be stopping in my city, and I immediately begged my mom for tickets. She obliged and in a few short months I was going to be seeing my favorite band of all time play live. Sadly enough they cancelled that tour and announced their hiatus. I, of course, was devastated. Heartbroken, even. I'd never experienced a band that I was invested in break up, let alone one that seemed to happen so abruptly. After I watched tripping in the dark I thought that there was nothing that could happen to bring them down. It seemed like they'd been through it all, and were taking a victory lap with Holy Ghost and the subsequent touring. But I guess we all learned the hard way that things aren't always as they seem. I mourned them, I really did. I gave myself a break from their music, too heartbroken to listen to my favorite songs for reminder that it was all over. Eventually I was listening to their music again though, this time with a new outlook on it. The thing about Mobo was that it felt tailored to people my age, but now 4 years after I discovered them, it somehow seems timeless despite me still being a teenager. The boys had a way of writing that cut deep despite their ages. It was poetic and thoughtful and raw even when it wasn't trying to be. Mobo saw me through what was the weirdest and hardest to traverse part of my life thus far. But in continuing to grow and become a more complex person, I have continued to rely on modern baseball. What they have written has only gained a newer and more meaningful place in my life. Unlike some bands that I used to love but now kind of cringe at, Mobo hasn't been a phase. Their music and their message is versatile and one that always needs to be heard. Mental health is a huge discussion topic within this scene now, and I definitely think Mobo helped pave the way for that. Thanks for the video, I hope you enjoyed my story, and long live Modern Baseball.

@David Optional I really didn't want to respond because I know that exactly what you wanted from this reply. But I wrote this whole long ass thing about growing out of other bands, but not growing out of mobo, and yet you have the gall to comment about how I'm gonna cringe at them some day. I seriously doubt it, but so what if that does happen? Why can't you just be okay with the fact that young people often like things that they grow out of eventually. Why would there ever be a problem with that. I don't sit around watching blue's clues anymore, but that doesn't mean I cringe at the thought of having watched it. I grew out of it because it was meant for kids. As clearly stated, mobo's demographic was/is teenagers and other young adults. So who fucking cares if my opinion on their songwriting changes as I continue to age. I don't understand why having a pretentious attitude towards music written by and for young people continues to be a part of this scene. Tons of other bands that are way more popular than mobo ever was remain popular to an aging group of people who still considered themselves pop punk, despite their lyrics being just as, and if not more, shallow and immature than anything mobo released.

I was 15 when I first heard Mobo, my crush at the time liked them and I remember listening to Apartment first and thinking “yes, I love this, THIS is what I want with my crush,” Things never worked out and my depression was worsening as sophomore year went on, but the more I listened to mobo the more i could relate, they really helped me through so many shit social situations and the bs of dealing with self doubt and figuring out who I am from that terrible HS to college transition... No other band really spoke to me as much as Mobo

Thank you for this. I just discovered them a couple years ago. On paper, I probably shouldn’t be as big a fan as I am. I’m almost 36 years old, have a family, a mortgage and a 60 hour a week job. I was into MXPX, Weezer and Green Day when I was a kid, but have “grown past” most of that music. But when I stumbled across Modern Baseball on UA-cam a couple years ago, I instantly fell in love with their music. Their honesty in angst, written so cleverly, brought me back to my youth. It was like hearing the Weezer blue album for the first time again, but more refreshing and honest. I’d love to see them get back together.

I sort of forgot about these guys after I grew up a bit. Listened to em earlier today and found out they were broken up and something in me started hurting a little. I had a special place in my heart for this band after all these years. They weren't virtuosic musicians or particularly super talented. They were just right and good at being their own band. Indeed a special group who captured the vibe and atmosphere of the indie/emo person in the 2010s

I was playing GTA V and I heard "California Grrls". When I went searching the clip, a guy commented: "you sing like the main singer of Modern Baseball". The name of the band got me and I searched them. I heard "Your graduation" first. Yep, it was love at first listening. It was 2015 and I listened only MoBo because the lyrics were so real, the feeling that they share with you, the teen anxiety and melancholic vibe some of the songs had, were really cool. I was sad when I heard they broke up and a couple of them had anxiety issues (I have them too, lol) and I hope they can get rid of it and join again. Without Marietta and Modern Baseball, my Spotify playlist is not as good as it could be. Nobody around me listen to this bands. Why? Maybe because I'm from Lima, Peru and they're not "popular" there, however, as my mom always says, music has no borders. Lots of love.

I stopped about a minute in and went and listened to ad much as i could. I had no clue two of the coolest bands i ever met (Elephant Jake & Nowadays) were so influenced by Mobo in their sound and i didnt have the right way to explain it for the longest time. Their music is inspiring on an artistic level that i cant put into words, but i really aspire to make music on the level which they did. Thank you for the amazing video

i know this video is a little older, but i wanted to add my two penneth because i realltntreasure mobo so much to not say anything in passing. even though my music taste has changed drastically in the last few years, i still hold such love and emotions for them and their music like i do with no other group. at the time when i was heavily into them (in about 2015-2016) i had gone through a breakup, the loss of a family member, the loss of a long-term friend, and my parents divorce, so to say i was in a bad place would be an understatement. i was getting to be addicted to drugs and i was drinking until i couldn’t even remember my name, and i had pregnancies scares from my inability to control myself. and then i got my modern baseball tattoo in jake’s handwriting on my wrist, and after an intimate show in a record shop, he and bren told me how much it meant to them that they’d helped me through an awful time; this was my turning point. i really owe the entire group and their music the world, because they made me feel normal and fine and like i wasn’t suffering through depression and anxieties alone, and it wasn’t even thanks to fake words and false expressions of sincerity like in my past. my tattoo is lyrics from ‘coals’, which read: “i’m alright and i’m always getting better”. and to this day, i look at it and i remember, and i breathe easier. because yeah life can be a real bitch sometimes, but i’m alive and i am healthy enough and i am happy enough. and i owe a lot of it to modern baseball

  • @itsnot.ronnie
    @itsnot.ronnie 5 років тому +1

Sir, I just wanted to say that this video 100% resonated with me. I was dealing with the same exact situation as you that you described at the end of this video. You’re absolutely right, a lot of people dealing with mental health issues look at help as a bad thing. It’s quite ironic. Just like you a MoBo song opened a part of me I didn’t know existed, for me it was “Note To Self” off of Holy Ghost.
The section that really got me was “Where I want to be still seems a thousand miles away. But pretending we feel safe right here gets harder everyday. It’s a note to self mislaid, you ate words you always used to say.”
I was depressed, in my senior year of high school, and lived in Vegas. A big city where everyone has big dreams that always come crashing and burning. I had stresses of your average teens life in high school plus the stresses of the constant loss of family members and friends due to suicide the last couple years. I also had the gnawing stress of “what the hell am I going to do with my life?” and also the stress of graduation.
After two failed suicide attempts, one the year prior and one just a couple months before graduation I just continued on with life almost like I was a robot. Then I stumbled across their album Holy Ghost and heard Note To Self, I listened to MoBo previous but only one or two songs. There was something therapeutic and eye opening about that segment. It singlehandedly got me to reach out to one of my closest friends about it and it eventually leaded to me getting help. I am forever grateful for MoBo, now here I am in my sophomore year in college trying to pave my way throughout life. I guess you could say I owe them my life as well. Thank you for the video, if you end up reading this thank you because at least I know I’m not the only one that feels this way about MoBo.

Modern Baseball mean so much to me. You know when you listen to a song and it relates almost identically to your life? For me, that was every one of their songs. They were like having somebody to talk to, because I just knew they understood. All those feelings and emotions I had trouble explaining were summed up perfectly within their music. It's something so hard to explain, yet something that seems so simple when you play one of their tracks. They'll always have a special place in my playlist. Long live Modern Baseball.

I feel so blessed I got to see them in my city, not only while they were still touring, but at the height of their popularity, too. A couple of their parents were at the show because of how close it was to their home town, and they all seemed genuinely happy to play that night and to have family there. It was truly one of the best shows I've ever been to, just because of how authentic the band is live, and how much they feed off of each other's energy.

Modern baseball quite simply just do it for me. There’s been a song to help me in every difficult situation I’ve had even if it’s just been one line. I got a whatever forever tattoo this year that no one ever really sees and it’s like a secret little reminder that everything will be fine, it’ll just be whatever. Cheesy but I love it.

I still hate I wasn’t into them when I could’ve seen them at this little bar in my hometown with The Wonder Years (the tour you discuss). When I realized it I literally almost cried. I could’ve gotten into them & seen them with my fave band. And now they’re on hiatus & I’ll never get the chance & they’re one of my faves. This is a great video.

Great video Nate! I'm hella sad I did not get the chance to see MoBo live before their disband. However, I saw Slaughter Beach, Dog. But it was not the same without Bren lol

I was just reflecting on when I moved to college and went to see a MOBO show by myself in a new city, and got to meet Bren outside after the show. I found them in high school and their music followed me through so much. Then this video popped up on my feed to continue the nostalgia ☺️ love it!

MoBo has been one of, if not my favorite band for years and the impact they had on myself and others is truly amazing. I have so much respect for them. They were so open and seem like such down to earth people. Their openness with mental health is really something that many bands and people in general don't even get into at all. Tripping in the Dark is a documentary I go back to pretty frequently and the honesty is phenomenal. Bren is one strong dude and seeing him open up is such a great feeling as someone who struggles as well. Gotta love them and hope someday they return with their powerful music.

Just Another Face always reminds me of my ex girlfriend who had to deal with severe depression and mild panic disorder. Capturing the thought that you are very proud of someone and wanting to stay with them through the whole process gives me chills everytime. Sadly i could never really tell her that, maybe the song will tell her that one day.

Liked and shared. Excellent video, man. I've been listening to Modern Baseball ever since a friend of mine recommended them to me a few years ago. I was lucky enough to see them live in 2016 alongside Joyce Manor and Thin Lips. They've been my favorite band since and I don't think that's going to change anytime soon.

MoBo will always be one of my top 10 bands. I found them at a time when I really needed a new band, and I found them so relatable. I got to see them right after “You’re Gonna Miss it All” came out, and the venue was tiny. Really cool to see them so up close. It kills me to know that a reunion is unlikely :(

MOBO was my gateway band to the emo genre (not like the emo as advertised by hot topic bands). Everything on this vid was spot on. They really were one of the most relatable bands to exist and you can show this band to someone that doesn't even like the genre and they'll still get no hate cause there isn't anything to hate about the band. I don't think bands like Mom Jeans or a good amount of those bands in counter intuitive records who I really like right now would exist without MOBO existing. Sucks I never got to see this band live despite having the opportunities to do so in the past.
