One thing I see is that these all seem to be blu rays, when some of them have 4K releases in the CC. Red Shoes is one that I’ve heard really shines in the 4K format. I just started collecting last year and have 9 of these. I’d say it would be worth it if you would buy enough of these to where the set discount will allow you to break even and get a few to try as blind buys. One more note. For me, these huge box sets are more of a hassle than regular cases, in the same way a 1000 page collection of short stories is to reading. You have a big bulky item that you have to look through to find what you’re looking for. Also, you have to remember all the movies it contains, because you won’t see the titles by perusing your collection. This is especially true because there isn’t a theme (like films by a director) that would allow you to know the films in the set without referencing a list somewhere.
You know what would have been REALLY cool? If they let people CUSTOM BUILD this set with 40 of their own choices as long as the films were all currently in print and under license from Criterion. So go for a plain semi-blank or non-specific packaging....and let people custom build THEIR 40 films to include in it. THAT would have been something special. To say hey...War of the Worlds, Godzilla, The Blob, Night of the Living Dead, Following, The Breakfast Club, The Princess Bride, etc etc I know that would have been a bit of a logistical nightmare...but it would have been wild and I think a LOT of people would have bit. Especially those looking for a chance to get a great package deal on a bunch of titles they've never purchased.
If this ends up in a half off sale, as someone with only a handful of criterions, i would consider this. Am considering it. But if its a limited at current price thing, idk if i can swing the ticket price. Would love to see more short news videos from the channel though!
Personally my only gripe with this is that it's a box set of movies you can get individually for an AESTHETIC value. To me the point of a collection is that it looks visually impressive. I would much rather have on my shelves the individual editions with their spines all showing. Maybe this is for boxset enthusiasts and not really for those collecting Criterion?
Exactly! This was another point I meant to mention. Even if I didn’t already own half of these titles, I would still prefer to collect the individual releases for all the care that goes into the art and packaging of each one. I do like box sets, but I prefer boxsets that collect a filmmaker’s work. The randomness of this one doesn’t appeal to me.
@@FilmsByColorIn theory, yeah it would be, but take a step back and think about how insane that sounds. Oh, so you’re a newbie? Drop $800.00 on this one box set! That should give you a good head start!
Feel like this is a super niche thing. Collectors already have a good chunk of these or would rather have 4K set. As for people just getting in idk. That price tag probably put them off. Hopefully they release something else to celebrate 40th anniversary like a poster or anything more affordable
Criterion's Christmas cash grab. You can get these blu-rays individually with better packaging - often at at a better price - some titles are probably available, or will be, in 4k editions from other labels. Criterion continues to disappoint. Maybe you can sucker a friend or relative to gift it for the holidays. Frankly, a subscription to the Criterion channel is a better option and you can check out which of the films randomly included aren't worth owning
I was about to comment somewhere to find out your thoughts on this release! You were way ahead of me. I only have 9 of these films. It’s enough to deter me from getting this box set. Would be great to have. But like with a lot of the “grail” DVDs too expensive. I like these random news videos! Keep doing them!
thing is most beginner collector's are going to be able to afford/not be willing to buy something at this price. may be popular at the half off sale though
Many of these films already have or will receive a 4K disc in the near future. If you're patient and wait for sales or scout on Facebook, Reddit, etc, you could probably get most of these releases at their best and actually watch them as you buy them.
I have all 40 films it’s a great idea and a lovely nod to the criterion closet nice for new collectors to get a nice cross section it will be a nice deal in the sale.
Happy for the company as a whole. Really cool they been around for 40 years. Feels like it’s for the got to have every release collectors but hopefully they do well with it and sell a bunch of these.
I actually only have 5 of these films, so I don’t feel like it would be that redundant for me. But that’s beside the point because … hundreds of dollars no matter when or how you get it. But part of me feels like I’d like to have the individual releases. However, I will say that almost all of these movies are ones I’d like to have or wouldn’t mind having, and many of them are films I might not be that motivated to get individually, and it’d be cool to have a way to get them along with others that I’d definitely want otherwise. It’d be cool, but probably not.
Here’s a question since everyone’s referring to casual collectors or new collectors concerning this set. What’s the number of criterion movies that makes you a beginner collector, or a novice collector, or a hard-core collector?
Not sure of the number, but I consider those UA-camrs who only buy the English language mainstream Hollywood type releases the collection puts out to be casuals. You know the ones, they publish a video of their hauls and they're all identical (Raging Bull, Thelma & Louise, After Hours, Risky Business... the list goes on). It's refreshing when you have a channel like this or James over at 20th and 21st Movies talk about foreign films or those outside the norm. Novice, I'd say those without a large number of releases, but open to any release. Hardcore, maybe those who've without thinking twice, let their love of film take them down all the various rabbit holes the collection allows. Also, completists :)
@@HenryLaPierre yeah I guess there’s more to it than just amounts. But the bigger Hollywood releases (Tootsie, Risky Business) are fewer in number for sure.

This is a mistake of Criterion! Much better would be the Akira Kurosawa box set! Who will pay 800 usd for it or also 400 usd with 50% descount! Too much!
This is a weird box set to me. New collectors like me aren’t generally looking for things like these. I don’t even know 80% of the films in this set and I wouldn’t do a major blind buy of that many movies. I mean I’d accept it as a gift but I wouldn’t seek it out myself. I only see hardcore collectors picking this up.
Collectors that buy Criterions most likely already have enough of the included titles to justify making a purchase worthwhile, and those new to Criterion are not going to drop the asking price (even at what B&N asks at their bi-annual sales) in one shot in any sort of numbers that would make this release a success. As to those mentioning the packaging, imo the individual releases are preferable to the obvious cardboard slots this will use that just scream scratches.
