I am a 65 year old novice bowl turner in Michigan, USA. I have worked with wood (mostly oak, ash, and cherry) building kitchen cabinets, dressers, wainscoating, and detailed fluted door trim. I am very glad that you have shown me the techniques for basic bowl, spindle, coblet turning, as well as the position of the various tools, and speeds that you use... THANKS again....
Hi Randy, I am very happy that my videos have been of some use to you, and hope that your are enjoying your turning journey. Take care, and thanks for your support also. Cheers Mike
Thank you Mike. At the grand age of 65, am just starting to turn. That was very informative. Got my Lathe, got my Torby chisels, just got to make the first move. I know my way round a carpentry workshop........cannot wait to start.
Mike, stumbled across your videos after my wife bought me my first lathe for Christmas. I have watched the first 3 so far and they have only wetted my appetite to get started. Thank you for making these videos. Terry from Texas
Steve you are an absolute genius ,I am an old fart that just started wood working and I surf an awful lot to find you tubes that are like yours ,slow and easy ,I really appreciate the way you take the time to explain everything so that even an old goat like me can understand . I am really starting to enjoy my new hobby ,and its gentlemen like you that make it a lot more enjoyable . Thank you Steve for what you do ,and I hope you keep it up. I've done a bit of woodworking/carpentry for years, but have always wanted to do wood turning. I'm approaching retirement and recently bought a cheap Harbor Freight lathe, just to see if I really liked it. I've been turning, or destroying wood, every time I get a chance. I wish I had not waited this long. There are no turning clubs or such near me, so I'm relying on youtube to be my instructor. I really appreciate these videos. One suggestion might be to do a video on tools, accessories, etc. There is a real learning curve there.
Another great video Mike! I find your videos not only informative but also very relaxing. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and skill. Take care.
I'm a 21 year old who had never worked with his hands once in his life, and this is the most fascinating thing I have ever watched in my life. Not only have you just got yourself a subscriber, but a person who is genuinely interested in what you are doing. Keep up the amazing work, and I look forward to watching your videos in the future. Thank you for that Mike. My Missus has just bought me a mini wood turning lathe for my 57th birthday. Although I have done some wood turning at school, many years ago, I had forgotten most of it. You provide clear and simple instructions, with good tips on finishing. I will be attempting a small bowl tomorrow, from an old Teak stair tread.
Hi Mike. The 'bowl' sort of evolved into a 'lidded pot'. I've no idea if I share photo's as a UA-cam reply, but I've posted a couple to my Facebook account. I sent you a friends request on Facebook, so you can have a look at my first attempt.
Still one of my favorite videos of yours to watch, for the simplicity and ease of explanation you have to make this beautiful bowl. Great work, Mike. You’ve come so far, and these older ones still hold up wonderfully, though.
Dear Mike, I've only recently started woodturning after being given a lathe. And pretty-much everything I have "learned" is down to you my friend, so I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you for the amount and QUALITY of videos you have on here. Early on I bobbed around between different video creators - but I always found myself back on your page Mike. Your calm, knowledgeable method of sharing information comes across in a very easy going way... which is Ideal for me as I have difficulty in being lectured to. It's taken me a while to get just the basic tools together. Christmas saw me ok, but for quite some time all I had was a decent skew chisel. Thankfully I'm quite proficient at sharpening, so I've learned to do all the basics so carefully with the skew chisel. Now I've got 5 decent brand new chisels, a decent stock of wood, LOADS of ideas on your wonderful videos. The only thing I need is a chuck. But I don't have a clue where to start? Money is ALWAYS an issue, but I have around 70 - 80 pounds. My Lathe is pretty basic, it's a Clarke 40" Wood Lathe.... I'M Really sorry to land this on you, but to be honest, you are the closest thing to a teacher I have... I really don't have anyone else to ask 🙁 If I've overstepped the mark, just delete this and accept my apologies. If NOT please advise me what chuck to get? I'm at a loss?
Hi, I can only think of Charnwood as an option for near your price point. The other possibility is to search eBay for a used one that would fit your particular spindle. You could also ring Peter Helmsley at The Toolpost here in the UK, and ask his advice, as they do a Versachuck system which may be what you're looking for. Hope this helps Cheers Mike

Mighty slick bowl you made there mike, love the meticulous finish. I've just bought myself a scroll chuck and have ordered a bowl blank, a finger chisel and bowl gouge and hopefully will get the bits to try turning my first bowl next weekend. Thanks mike your videos are very educational.
stuart w Hi Stuart, and thank you for your kind words. best of luck with your new hobby, and if you need any advice on something, don't hesitate to let me know. Take care Mike
Thanks, Mike, another excellent video in your Beginner's Guide series. One suggestion for those of us new to bowls would be to add some discussion of the tool presentation to the wood to show how you ride the bevel on inside and outside as well as the scraping presentation. Really enjoy your approach and you'll be at ten thousand before you know it.
Thanks for all your beginners guides Mike, they are extremely helpful to a beginner like me. I really appreciate the effort that you put into them, keep them going, Cheers, Cam.

I finally got the sealer mix formula and will give that a try. So far, I've been disappointed in my finish, but you explained why. I need to seal first, then wax. Thanks for a great video.
Just starting to do wood turning I got given a lathe this morning watched the first four videos found them a great help .i just have to do a lot of practice before I start to use expensive wood well thanks for the help
Great video. One of my friends is a wood turner but he isn't very good at explaining what he is doing and why.You explained the steps very well,Thank's. Nice shape and finish.
Mike, thank you once again for explaining your steps. I thought I had been messing up with using a ruler to find the center of whatever blanks. You cleared that up for me. I have a center finder like the one you use and now it will get a lot more use.
Well Mike: I think you covered all the bases quite nicely. And that does look like wonderful wood! But it still takes a good hand to make good wood look its best! Thanks for the video Larry

Glad you found the video of some use Miss Tee, and happy to hear that you overcame in the end. Thanks for the shout out as well, much appreciated. Cheers Mike
Hi Mike, this is a really great video. I think you should have titled it " How to make bowl turning look easy" Its always a pleasure to watch a real craftsman at his work. All the best Tony
Mike, you did a tremendous job, putting these video's together. You see, it will eventually pay off. Good for you and the turners who need quickly to find a reference to refresh their memory or to see "how it is made". I apriciate all the work and time you put in, for the pupose of helping other turners out. This deserves a long time achievement award! Thanks again and keep up the good work. Take care, with greetings from "insignificant" Belgium.
Hello Mike, I am literally about as new as it gets with regards to wood turning but I have just purchased my first home and really looking forward to taking up the hobby in it, I would just like to say your creations and videos are great and appreciate the time and effort they take. Very helpful - kind regards. Nick.
Thanks Mike, I'm really looking forward to getting to work on my new lathe, I will try to follow the instructions you have given. Plenty of mistakes to make but can't wait. Thanks for sharing
Another great job, Mike! You made that piece of walnut turn into a beautiful bowl - well proportioned and a lovely finish! You are getting ahead of me, I am still doing between center work, haven't even got to turning a box from your earlier video yet :) Nice thing about this medium, though, when I am ready, I can watch again, make sure I have the techniques down pat. Hearty congrats on hitting 8000, that's quite an achievement! Looking forward to your next work!
Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement David, I really appreciate them. Don't leave the box and goblet too long....I am itching to see your work my friend. Take care Mike
Thanks for this great series of videos, incredibly helpful for someone just starting out - hoping to go to my local hackspace and turn a bowl this week. This video has given me a lot more insight and confidence on where to start with that! Steve.
Nice 1 Mike. As always you take the lead. Love these video's, and we too have a lot of wood here in the Carolina's.. lol. Mostly pine. Some hard wood's, 1 I like is Pecan.. Turn's well, How ever if not stored and dried correctly the wood ant's love to hollow it out..
Mike.., it's been a while since I have been on you tube.., beautiful bowl.., see, English and American mix well! Good to see you mate. You look like you are doing well!
Good video Mike. I learnt to turn in 1989 at Craft Supplies, Derbyshire. It was a weekend course run by Jamie Walwin. There were 5 people on the course and we stopped in their own B & B for the 2 nights. 4 or 5 projects we made, one being the box. I've decided to return to turning after a period off of ten years and you kindly answered my question on what lathe to buy, Subject to the T.P.O. (Turning permission officer) i.e. my Lady wife. The front runner be an Axminster lathe for under a £1000 with chuck and tools etc. The only tools I have left is a Jacobs chuck and Sorby 1/2"....may I wish you and yours a happy New Year, and good health sir.........
Hi Ian, and thank you. Great to hear that you are getting back into this wonderful craft ... good call... as they say :) A very Happy New Year to you and yours as well mate. Take care Mike
Lovely.bowl simple lines, yet elegant, follows the KISS Principal , Keep It Simple Silly I love working with the American walnut the timber has a nice tight straight grain , not too hard ,and turns nicely ,and polished up looks grand A well done demo , do not miss your mates trying to see who is more silly that the others Have you thought of doing a voice over narration ?
Hey Mikey! You did me proud mate! Sorry it was such a boring piece of walnut. I was hoping for a nicer grain pattern but you never know what you got until you turn it. For being the first time turning walnut you did an outstanding job of it. The grain looks brilliant with your finish. You must tell me what the secret formula is someday. This will not be the last piece I send you IF YOU LIKED IT. I think I have a few burl pieces in the fireplace wood pile. I hope you enjoyed it and I'm so happy I could be part of your first walnut bowl. Mike it was my absolute pleasure. Take care me good mate and congratulations on 8000 subscribers.
Hi Tom, Glad you didn't think I let you down mate. Actually the Walnut was so boring when I was turning it I dozed off twice....lol. If you ever burn a burl .....the wood monster will come and get you mate!!! Be assured. Take care buddy Mike
Thanks for all the tips you gave it was a help. I was one that was totally aginst using steel wool on a project until I try it and I love the finish it leaves.

Thanks Dave, I am very envious of all my friends across the pond, as you seem to have an abundance of beautiful woods to choose from.

Lovely.bowl simple lines, yet elegant, follows the KISS Principal , Keep It Simple Silly I love working with the American walnut the timber has a nice tight straight grain , not too hard ,and turns nicely ,and polished up looks grand
A well done demo , do not miss your mates trying to see who is more silly that the others
Have you thought of doing a voice over narration ?
Thanks for your input and kind words Gary, much appreciated.
You make it look so easy!!! I'm itching to get a lathe but we don't really have the room for one.
Thanks James, you can get a mini lathe to get started! ;)

Hi Tom,
Glad you didn't think I let you down mate. Actually the Walnut was so boring when I was turning it I dozed off twice....lol.
If you ever burn a burl .....the wood monster will come and get you mate!!! Be assured.
Take care buddy
Mike
Thanks for all the tips you gave it was a help. I was one that was totally aginst using steel wool on a project until I try it and I love the finish it leaves.
