The booster can be very bad on some servers and not work at all, but if the booster does work the safest strategy is to fall onto it as slow as possible (press s to slow your fall), but even this doesn't guarantee the boost will work. I'd say about a third of the time it throws you into the ceiling instead.. If you want to play on a server where the booster does work I recommend you go to one of the KSFClan servers (works best on CS:S)
