in answering to your title: no. you wanted to keep the outside. and you have the space. so feel konfident. it will work
I think insulating inside was a fantastic idea, sure you lose space but your walls will now be straight! Most renovated houses have such big problems because their walls are not square or straight. Fantastic job as always
I forgot how much there was to do! You are courageous, determined, and have a superior work ethic. I’m in awe.
I love that you didn't want to change the look of your beautiful home by insulating on the outside. It made much more sense to tackle it from the inside. Looking great!
Dear Annika, We love you so. Your little loaf body, cute white chin and excellent inspection skills are the star of this channel. Have a wonderful Spring. From, Your Fans
Annika fan club!!!!!! ❤🤍🖤
Ms. Cat inspector has added her new fluffy fur coat and winter weight for the cold. Illia thank you everything looks great. House will use less energy to heat and cool for the future. Hope your chimney will be and easy repair. Have a great week.
I didn't know about hempcrete until you used it 😊 I looked deeper into it recently and found it definitely has a presence here in the USA 😁 I've learned it has some very beneficial aspects, especially pest and rodent deterrence, have had an annoying problem with that last one this season, here the R value vs space required is phenomenal, it's R value far outperforms traditional insulation and it's very cost effective for the added benefits!! In your situation, for breathability of the building alone and in keeping the facade intact, it's totally your best choice!! ❤️❤️❤️👍👍
I like the fact the hemp insulation is eco-friendly. Good choice.
Love your work…… I did enjoy the “Little House” conversion, but I’m really glad to see the main house back “on the menu” ….. Cheers from Oz 🇦🇺
From Canada. We know about insulation..lol You have left a gap between the hemp and the brick. This is the best method. Brick needs to "breathe" You will be amazed by the energy savings. Great work!
Oh Illia! You make me smile. This has been a long hard journey so having a day here and there where you do little jobs is perfect. Just think, the more bricks that go up, the less you have to maneuver around them.
Laziness, Illia-style: I'm too lazy to do this job, so I'll do these twelve jobs instead. I should be so lazy. Your choices are excellent, and your work ethic is inspirational.
I think you made a good choice for the insulation and where to install it.
Iv always hated working with fiberglass type insulation mostly used here in the USA.
Wishing you the best of success.
From Illia's remarks at the beginning he wishes itvwas done.😊 But looks like he made some good progress 😊
Good work and progress. You can still insulate the wall shared with the barn from the barn side, leaving the texture of brick exposed on the house side. Thanks for sharing your wonderful adventure with all of us.
Ah thank you for the update for Catspector! I'm glad to know she is fixed but still is keeping rodent population down.
As for the amount of space 'lost' by using insulation inside it's quite nominal when you think about it overall. The the house is quite large to begin with, you're preserving the historical exterior, and will have efficiency when it comes to heating the house. I say that is an overall benefit!
Insulating on the internal walls is not a big mistake.
And it looks good too.
👍🙏😊🇳🇿
The rooms seem so large even after the insulation is installed. Good work and loads of it.
Sometimes the work process is repetitive and boring. But the results are not. 👍👍👍
Even though you lose the mass of the outside walls to "store" heat, you will be able to heat it up faster, because you don't have to heat the walls. Also, I'm pretty sure there's no void (vide) on those walls, they're full walls of probably one and a half bricks. If you want to insulate on the outside, you can not simply remove the outer layer. You would insulate on top of the outside walls, then put another wall (brick, wood etc.) in front of it to cover it up. It would be a lot more work, it would also cost a lot more.
Don’t spend even one second concerning yourselves with the wrongs and rights of your insulation choice . You are absolutely completely correct in your choice in your situation .I think your research into the areas with which you are not familiar is faultless.when we see the problems that exist in restoration because incorrect materials and/ or methods ,your work gets a prize❤❤
Congratulations! It is a great honour when a noble cat chooses to gift you with fresh, free range, organic meat! It's so much better than that stuff the supermarkets sell... 😉♥️🐈⬛🐭😄
...unless, of course, the cat is bringing mice to you so you will prepare a nice meal for her ..." here, servant, cook this for me!" 😄
Dear Annika, I absolutely love it when you do the talking during the video. Not only are you beautiful but your voice is very soothing. It is very hard for me to understand your husband, even the closed captions don’t understand what he is saying, but to his credit, it is very hard to know how to speak multiple languages so I give him credit. ❤ Blessings to you all.
I absolutely think that you have made the correct decision using these products (Hempcrete) on the inside of your farm house so long as you can afford the extra cost, Dan
Illia and Mariana that was great enjoyed the explanations on the why's you are going the right way thank you for explanations you both doing a fantastic job thank you for sharing and your time was really great never miss a video and can't wait for next video thank you
This will be a well insulated home!!!
Another benefit of insulating from the inside is that you can do it as time and budget allow. Insulating the outside would have had to be done quickly to avoid weather damage so would have needed a professional crew at a high cost. Laura Kamph (on UA-cam ) is restoring her timber frame house using a similar system, though clay based. She is using a fiberglass reinforced clay render that may be appropriate for you. In her most recent episode she leaned how to apply it. Looks really easy with an amazing finish.
To me, that place is huge, and the space lost to insulation is minimal and well worth it, it'll be a nice cosy place to live and won't cost a fortune to heat and cool.. I'd recommend getting a heat pump system for maximum efficiency.. 😊👍
You can make also bloks from the loose hemp and the mortar for specific corners.Hemp is pure natural, that's what I like about it.
It’s obvious you two take time to research your options, then look at the good and bad of each and then you make decisions based on what’s best for you, as it should be. There are no bad decisions when you do it that way so don’t listen to the negative feedback! You’re smart and care about the right things. This insulation is going to give you those nice big windowsills that are a great bonus in both form and function. Like Marina said you can feel the difference in warmth already and it will keep you cool in summer too. That’s well worth the small amount of space you sacrifice. Well done! I also want say how impressed I am about your plans for a park setting in the field. It’s going to be beautiful. Continue to create with confidence that you’re doing great.
Was a joy to see you all again. Good luck and rest when you feel tired.
Where I live in Western Canada house insulation is applied between 2 by 6 or 2 by 4 walls, mostly 2 by 6 then a vapour bearer of poly which is installed to prevent air movement through the wall, all seams are taped. On the outside wall a continuous house wrap is installed prior to finishing. Most houses use high efficiency heating and some apparently are using heat pumps which apparently work down to -30 C give or take depending on there efficiency. Fresh air for the interior is also provided. A big change from when walls were lined with old newspaper.
I have seen another UA-camr use the Hemp Blocks & it turned out STUNNING 💕🇦🇺💕
I am curious as to how you run wiring and plumbing in the new walls? Great to see all the projects progress!
Check out @ateliermavi. They’ve been renovating an old Italian cottage using eco-friendly materials and hemp is a big part of it.
We insulated from inside - insulating from outside or cavity insulation you are heating at least 1 course of brick.
Dont forget to map out all your electrical cabling first. Makes a great finished job
Your cat friend sure hasn't missed any meals. lol
Progress is fantastic, although it seems to be a lonely job.
Beau travail supervisé par la belle Anneke 👏👏😻
You are correct; when working on an old house if there is a job you don't want to do, there is always another job in the wings. Very impressed to find out about the insulation you are using. It sounds like you have done your research and picked a very good insulation, especially when you can already notice a difference in the room! Keep going.....you will get it done eventually, and it will be a much better house when you are done. Thanks for sharing your work.
Maintaining as much of the historic architecture of the building is obviously a priority. Otherwise, everything you have worked so hard to save and protect would have been wasted.
I really enjoyed hearing about your thoughts regarding the insulation and how you are designing breathablity into the project.
Great going I’m watching still DIYs
You’ve made the right choice, absolutely.
Insulation on the inside of your house is perfect and is defenetly no mistake, so good to se the progress on your dream home. 🙂
Hiding the exterior walls behind insulation would have been a crime against this beautiful old architecture. It's a 110yo Belgian farm house thats supposed to look exactly like this from the outside. You did good by insulating the way you did, period.😊
I believe that you guys are doing a great job fixing the house ❤❤❤😊😊😊
Our black cat, Geneviève, was very interested in Aanika’s treks up and down the stairs. 😂 She just stared and stared. 😳😂
I think what you loose in space you gain in energy savings and peace of mind.
Hello from Cyprus, Your insulating from the inside is a great idea keep up the good work
Great work...takes time, but the time is going to keep going anyway. Someday, you will look back and be amazed!🙂
Wiederum tolle Arbeit von euch beiden ihr seit einfach ein super Team macht weiter 👏🏻👋👌🙂🙋♂️🇩🇪🤗😉👍
You will get there! 👍Important work takes time….🥰
Please, please watch Laura Kampf blogs, she's from Germany, and is doing the same and more then you are. Hemp blocks and the hemp plaster are great products. Great job
Looks great! It’s going to be a very warm and healthy house.
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you all guys good work 👍😁 nice to see anica again the cat spector she is so nice 🐈.
Anneke🥰begging for food 😂I think the insulation is a good idea the rooms are big enough where you will still have ample space❤️
well it has been a while since i sat in class but if i remember correctly your insulation position should be as far inside as possible so that it is also possible to have your moisture barrier at the outer 1/3 of wall thickness which is inside the zone where moisture will freeze or condense ...the point being to let the wall breath moisture out where it can freze in the airspace between the sheathing and insulation outside the building envelope , this only works if the interior is air sealed from the wall cavity . thanks for the videos
Catspector workinkg ;)
If there are conditions where there is below zero outside, it is important that the moisture that is absorbed trough the wall (water wapors move always in the direction towards cold) it is important that the moisture is not freezing inside of the wall. Otherwise the bricks with gradually deteorate.
I had to wait to the very end to get the "Like and Subscribe".
Ви так багато працюєте! Успіхів вам і натхнення🇺🇦
Is Anneke pregnant ? It’s always a great pleasure to see that nice cat 🐈⬛ supervises workers 😂
Take care of yourself 💕
🌸🌸🌸
that cat is between the Megachonker and "oh lawd she comin'" on the conker meter... xD
Well done.
My Jupiter cat looks like her. Happy and round .
A few inches lost for the benefits is nothing if you wanting insulation. By what we see it is affordable to what is gained long term 📣
Good work. Thank you for the video.
The work must be inspected and pass…. 😻
We own brick commercial buildings so I did a lot of research on this topic. The engineer from New York stated that if you insulate the inside, you should use cellulose because it wicks water like brick does and reduces the freeze thaw effect.
Love the hemp crete👍 Illia will love it too in a few years when he forgets having to lay it 😂🍻
Amazing as always
When insulating the interior, it is very important to ensure rear ventilation because the shift in the dew point can lead to moisture in the wall.
Love the little cat ❤
Good work, and real authentic channel
~ Was insulating from the *inside* a big mistake?
No; you had no alternative since insulating from the *outside* was not an option.
~ Does insulating from the inside have drawbacks?
Yes; apart from a slightly higher cost just one really : reduced interior space.
~ Are the drawbacks blocking?
No; the large rooms allow for some reduction
~ Are the drawbacks compensated by advantages?
Yes; natural materials, echo efficiency, insulation value, no cold bridge, moisture regulation, mold resistance, insect resistance, rodent resistance
Looks great!
Looks good
The house is huge, so the loss of space is irrelevant. And you can install it no matter how bad the weather is.
Черный прораб прибыл с проверкой. Класное видео. Мне нравится ваш канал.Удачи.
In Australia insulation I done on the inside. But in a wooden or steel frame. Also the brick external is the harder weathering materiel. The softer block should be on the inside . You are right.
yes insulating from the inside is the way to go in this case, you can also impregnate the outside walls so rain cant come into the stone, that makes and extra layer of protection, that you loose some space inside is not realy a problem, the rooms are big enough and smaller space means it heats up faster.
Anneke❤
Right choice and it works.
Haha.. you can do a million jobs right now Illja 😂. That never gets dull.
0:02 Crickets? In the Flemish winter? 😂
Catspector approved.
that cat could stand a few more laps up and down those stairs. ;)
❤ excellent choice ❤
The loss of space isn't such a great disadvantage as this house has plenty of space, it would be more of a problem if the rooms were small already.
Anneke needs to slim down a bit, she has a good life.
That’s a chubby kitty!
CAT INSPECTOR definitely needs workout up and down stairs 😂😅
Great choice
Wall looks good😊
Bei einem denkmalgeschützten Gebäude gibt es ja auch keine andere Wahl...
Ik denk dat jullie keuze prima is. Ik heb meerdere projecten gezien waar ze dat ook doen.
Have you thought about putting some type of time capsule behind the insulation wall. Like you did the floor time capsule. Just curious.
Ik denk dat je de beste keuze hebt gemaakt met de isolatie 👍
Try vermiculit and perlit👍
❤😊great job
It definitely is tricky. It’s easy to make serious mistakes when insulating from the inside. As a contractor here in Belgium, I’m not allowed to do it without supervision of an expert. It’s quite an extensive (and expensive) course with exam and control period before you can become an expert. A civil engineering architect is also seen as an expert.
Thanks!
Thank you so much, Joe!
Other than loosing some interior space I don't see any downside to your insulation plan, as long as the material you put in the air space is dry and not compacted too much. If you compact the air space fill too much it simply conduct the cold to the inner wall and you loose the insulative property of the air between the two walls.
