    Great review, Jason. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this lens vs the new Tamron 90mm Di III VXD macro lens.

    Thanks so much for the recommendation, Jay! So glad you enjoyed using the lens. FYI if you shoot with L-mount, you can adjust the focus ring sensitivity via the UD-11 USB Dock.

      What do you mean by that? That is the ud-11 etc.

      The dock is used for updating the lens firmware, and apparently other things as well...

    Thank you for the video.
    it will be a good lens for food photography

      For extremely close-up macro food photography yeah! Otherwise you will have to move pretty far away to get the entire plate with this lens for example... I tend to go for more around 35mm or 50mm for food photography, but that is because I am usually sitting at the table taking photos as I eat. If in a professional environment I would be using a tripod and could easy get further back which would allow for an 85mm for example...

    Hi Jason, for portraits with this Sigma 105MACRO at 7 ft distance I need F8 to get tip of nose and ears all in focus.... Is this normal ?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  10 днів тому

      Yes, that is the depth of field and F/8 is normal for a portrait at that distance if you need the nose to ears tack sharp. I used to use f/5.6 and f/8 all the time back in the day in the studio doing professional portraits! Especially if the head was slightly turned, because I always wanted both eyes tack sharp for the work I was doing...

    I think OS is an issue using it in the field with butterflies and insects so I stay with the sony 90 but glad that Sigma is also out with a macro. I'm just waiting for a longer focallenght lens with os.

    Nice tutorials, really helpfull
    But i'm wondering, if the sigma 105mm cost 829€ and the sony 90mm cost 899€ which one would you get for sony a7rv? (For stills and video)

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  29 днів тому +1

      I would get the Sony out of the two, because native lenses tend to perform better in extreme situations. Both are great options though don't get me wrong!

    That’s an isopod, not a stag beetle! I appreciate this video though, learning how to properly use this lens has been challenging as someone who’s new to photography, you solved some of my issues. I appreciate you!

    Once again I stumble upon a video of yours :) Your videos already helped me decide in favor of the Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di USD, and again with the Sony 24-105mm F4. Now I can't seem to make up my mind between the Sony 90mm and this Sigma 105mm, to be used on a A7RII, for mainly macro and also some portraits. I can get them for around the same price (Sony used, Sigma new) and they seem to me to be quite close to each other in terms of performance. At the same price, would you go with the Sigma over the Sony? Again, thank you for your work! Best

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  3 роки тому +1

      For the same price I would go with the Sony assuming the lens is mint condition of course ;)

    Great video! Do you ever think that Sony will make a G Master Macro Lens?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, I think I some point they will make one although their FE 90MM f/2.8 G OSS Macro Lens is pretty awesome ;)

    Just imagine if they made this exact same lens, but with 11 aperture blades instead. Then it would be the almost perfect all arounder for macros and portraits. Yes, a larger aperture would be desirable for portraits, but such lenses cant do macros to the same degree.

    On an APSC body that's 157.5 not 127.5

    SIGMA EX 105mm F/2.8 DG MACRO HSM OS is the one to get .... the sharpness and colors are simply amazing and better than the DG DN ! ...... and I have owned both and kept the older version......
