Wanted to send a link to my last Rockman X-100; that I sold. The copy or advert has a ton of info in it
regarding the evolution From "Just' the earliest rockman to the Rev 10, X-100. Also, dispelling some of the sonic slanders, myths, and urban legends. There are zero UTube videos posted that, when played thru amp... that
accurately sounds as good as when played directly into the right phones, with the right guitar cable or lead.
Lastly From the first to the last, is like Playing a Marshall Towne & Country 100 with all knobs @ 5, compared to a
50w JCM 800 "Dime-d". I could get this sound if I wanted or many variations.

I sincerely apologize for this long @/}|
@@atishadipankara9138 the x100 which I had circa 1986 wasn't the most accurate for playing Boston like you said it had the most gain and the effects were a lot cleaner and more digital sounding not very warm and organic as the previous incarnations were. The fact that the distortion depth was dependent on input volume makes the Rockman tone unique - it's very dynamic so it can't be digitally modeled.
Did you scallop the whole fingerboard?
Def Leppard actually recorded their hysteria album with this
Megadeth recorded Peace Sells with it too!
Mark St. John used it on KISS’s Animalize album
Yes it was the X100 model 👍
It was also heavily modified...
Wow. It so b amazing that ea. ch of you chode smokers were there during the recording of Kiss, Megadeth, and DefLeppard albums. And know precisely what gear they used .
I N all actuality neither of. You ass pirates were there so go back to your mommas basement and. Keep your mouth shut unless your Uncle Fred comes o ver and has you polish his knob , that you mealy mouthed sac lickers enjoy so much
This is by far to this day the best pedal for the 80s Glam, Hard Rock Ballads or Arena Rock sound. If you want your Guitar to sound like Europe, Def Leppard, Whitesnake 80s or ZZ Top Afterburner period this is the pedal/preamp.
I think it sounds great considering how hard it is to make cab simulation sounds right in analog domain. There is certain sonic signature in that unit that is very appealling.
I totally agree, even to the extent that I wouldn't call the tone "dated" by any means. I think it just depends on the context in which it is being used and the playing style of the user.
Tom was a genius and ahead of his time in designing gutiar preamps, just think how many years ago this was
James Miller yea he sure was , a musical genius
1982
@@scottychapin 1982 was when Scholz released the Rockman for commercial availability. But he employed the technology on the first album in 1976. Not neatly packaged and compact like in the Rockman, of course.
@@Terrysoddy A musical genius yes, but a genius all-around. He was an electrical engineer from M.I.T.!!!!!!
James Miller
What's this 'was'? Has he pegged it?
I had a Rockman, Hohner headless guitar and a good set of headphone while serving in the U.S. Navy in the late 80s. I shared an aircraft carrier with almost 6,000 other men, so these could easily fit in my locker and wouldn't wake everybody else up.
Thank you for your service and thats a cool story
What a cool setup! Thank you for your service, and excellent way to innovate!
Gonna hitch a ride
Head for the other side
Leave it all behind(!!)
Never change my mind!
Salute to my understanders.
This piece of gear was highly coveted back in the day for up and coming players like myself. There just wasn’t enough gear that was attainable but the Tom Scholz Gear was something you could buy to get the sound of something on an album. Great video Leon.
It's a fascinating device. Tom was a real forward thinker.
There was great effects before find 6 and accidents it was possible to get great guitar effects before Line 6 very nice clean sounds
Cool video thanks for making and taking the time to post
Also,Tony Mac Alpine on the M.A.R.S. album, Cock Robin, and Neal Schon on Journey's Only the Young, amongst others
Tom somehow did his work a little too well, as he created a device which people do not try to emulate very often, or else I don’t think they can.
Megadeth used Rockman gear for Peace Sells. Also someone profiled the rockman on the Kemper RIg exhange.
Def Leppard used it exclusively on Hysteria, too.
@@frdh1357 Didn't know that. Thanks. That album has crazy good tone.
Jeff Beck on the remake of People Get Ready
Def Leppard actually used the JHS Rock Box, a clone of the Rockman. Megadeth used Rockman on Peace Sells through Marshalls- Chris Poland's tone is it directly into a Marshall (Plexi or JCM?). Some of the other tones associated with Rockman were actually Gallien Krueger 250MLs, which are pretty similar but slightly different. Somewhere In Time by Iron Maiden is the Krueger- I bought one just because of that album recently. I used to have the Rockman soloist- the Krueger hasb a lot more gain and I like it better and its close enough lol
@@themadmattster9647 the Rockman has more midrange than the GK stuff.
Oh yes!! Thats just what we all played in the 80s! Tom Scholz is a Genius.... BOSTON had the most unique sound, opened the door to all the multi effects processors today!!! You should have done a video playing a Bunch of BOSTON's music/riffs! Thanks for the walk down memory lane
You can’t watch an 80’s movie without one of these in the soundtrack. The clean mode is pure Def Leppard hysteria.
Agreed, id say the most noticeable being Danger Zone from top gun
Big B Kenobi Beverly Hills Cop, too.
rachel anne ambrose yep
rachel anne ambrose wouldn’t shock me. I’ve been meaning to try one for some times, but have gotten such good results from a few key plugins.
rachel anne ambrose yea and no complaints about her tone from me
I want to get one of these just to try to recreate the Def Leppard Hysteria tone.
I'm been chasing that tone forever. Apparently it's a modded rockman though.
@@devendasmusic they used both. Like Raunch said the rockmans were apparently modified.
Deven Das I have the U.K. JHS rockbox from the 80s ,it’s awesome
Ben Funk I thought they used Randalls then? They did live.
TheMasonator777 That was just live. In the studio they had a ridiculous set up where the rockman’s were used as the base guitar tone, but they were run through all kinds of EQs and compressors to get that tone on the album. There’s an interview with the engineer, Mike Shipley, where he talks about it.
I have the X100 and Sustainor and I record and gig with them exclusively. They're definitely one-trick ponies but their place in history cannot be discounted. They really were a game changer when they first came out. A $10,000 stage stack sound in a sandwich-sized box was mind-blowing back then.
cool you STILL gig with them. They seem like they're well constructed for being nearly 40 years old! I bought a Gallien Krueger 250ML recently and it sounds good as new, hard to beat gear that's super old running like it was just bought. The 250ML seemed like they were trying to bridge the "real amp" thing with the Rockman thing, and it does pretty well doing that. I couldn't resist since Somewhere in TIme by Iron Maiden is one of my favorite albums of all time and I was dying to hear that tone in my playing
I have both too. I practice with the X100 and blow the windows out with a rackmount rig with the Sustainor as the frontend. They are kind of "Boston-in-a-Box!" but they were really phenomenal in their time and still hold up. Like I said in a previous reply, buried somewhere in these bazillion comments, you can de-Bostonize the sound a lot by using a parametric EQ to notch out the heavy 500Hz emphasis that's built into (especially) the Sustainor.
The Boston's type of tone is a little bit more sophisticated than only a "Rockman" alone.
Def leppard hysteria album was recorded using this headphone amp not the full rockman gear
motto sierra apparently they also used a Palmer speaker sim with a notch filter and the jhs rock box
From what I've read on these it or a studio version was a standard part of most studios and was used on countless recordings, including records, commercials, pretty much everything during the 80's. I'm guessing we heard it more times than we could ever know.
Ahhh...the ole Rockman. That one looks almost new, good score. Tom was definitely a bit different, I spent a few hours researching him one day...an odd bloke for sure, but man did Boston have some ahead of their time tones and studio magic. Not bad for a dude locked in the basement. His playing was pretty tasty too.
6:03 Now you’re breaking the chains!!! 💪
Love that sound when you started playing Breaking the Chains!
5:40 MICHAEL SCHENKER (UFO) - ROCK BOTTOM................NICEEEEEEEEE
Man this brings back some memories. Lots and lots of practicing on this when I was learning guitar back in the 80's. I used this with an MXR distortion pedal in front. At the time it was all you needed.
I used one of these in the studio in the early 80’s. It worked fine. I recently got a Yamaha THR10. What a great tool. Especially after running it through my laptop and setting the compressor and gate up.
"Tom Scholtz was 'kind of' a studio wizard." LOL!! He is the CONSUMMATE studio wizard and the first two Boston albums are proof!
Just a little bit :D
Tom Fortin yea he wasn’t just kind of a studio wizard , he was the studio wizard . He invented stereo ,and stereo chorus. Plus a lot of other effects that he never really got credit for . But the real beauty of it is , he didn’t want credit for it . He so,d his company to Dunlop .
It's Scholz without the "t". Rhymes with "moles".
Especially liked the Zakk Wylde coming through the Rockman! I had one of these, no idea what happened to it.
Did Cindi Laupers guitar player use a rockman? He/she had a lot of sparkley clean chorus guitar tones...???
Scholz was making these sounds on Boston's first two albums in the 1970's. If you want to hear this tech in all its glory, listen to some Boston songs through a good pair of headphones. Foreplay/Long Time, Don't Look Back, and Cool The Engines are some of the best examples, in my opinion. But there are so many good ones. This sound really is timeless, rather than dated. But few, if any, other than Scholz have ever been able to incorporate it into their style.
@Chistoper Robertson That's great Christopher. Have a good day, buddy.
Tom used a mode very similar to EDGE for most of his leads. The difference is that he played through the pro versions: the famous Rockman Modules in half-rack format. These are what Def Leppard, ZZ Top, and others used (some to this day!)
If you set the input gain to match the output level of your pickups, you can make EDGE mode very responsive. I built my amp rig around an original Rockman Sustainor. I used a modern Lexicon digital processor to do the chorus and reverb effects because the original Rockman chorus/delay units are comparatively rarer and more expensive. One thing to know is that all of the Rockman gear has a pronounced EQ peak around 500 Hz. If you want to make the sound less identifiably Boston, add a parametric EQ and deBostonize the sound to your liking.
I would like to know where and what to buy.
Mostly every rock and pop band in the '80s used the Rockman!
I rember these. They deserve to be made into floor pedal. I think people would buy them. Such a waste to limit as a belt pack. I think they sold for 175.00 or so.
Cool to hear the Rock Bottom riff.
One of my all time favourites
That’s it. I’m getting rid of my AX8 and getting a Rockman 😀
Ultimate retro rig
Brings back memory’s , used to sit on the floor in front of my cassette player ,had it plug into the rockman and practice. 😀
Happy days I bet :)
Someone add No More Tears to their set-list? :) Nice ride down memory lane. Had one of those myself back in the day.
Such a chunky riff!
Very cool! Always wanted a Rockman, wish I had gotten one when they were easier to find. A metal zone and a chorus can get reasonably close to it, but it's still not quite the same. Thanks for the review!
I lucked into a fully functional XPR a couple of years ago. I'm always tempted to flip it, but then I play through it and change my mind.
I have an issue of Guitar World magazine with an article about how Hysteria was recorded and it was basically this Rockman and a Japanese strat copy with a Dimarzio Super Distortion played by both Steve Clark and Phil Collen, so the term "Def Leppard in a box" is spot on!!! Nice demo!!!
There you go!
Kiss used a Rockman for 'Animalize,' as well...
@@johnjonestheman , Crazy Nights also
I think Def Leppard may have used Rockman amp heads, which would have allowed more control over tone. Mutt would have wanted the most control he could get!!!!!
Zztop for Eliminator and Afterburner and..... Rumor has it.. Megadeth's Rust in Peace... great video my friend.
That last bit sounds a lot like Brian May! :-)
Considering this thing was made 35 years ago, it's amazing. Love the what if Boston covered Dokken and UFO.
I'd read that Scholz also had two 24 track tape machines and since SMPTE didn't exist then, he printed snare drum to a track on both decks to line them up. Those who have worked with real tape know what a chore that is.
Also read that Yngwie used a Rockman on the Alcatrazz album he played on.
Yes. Tom had engineers come in and had the machines locked but it wasn't perfect so he tore the whole thing out and he would listen to the snare and cymbals. If one would start to wander he'd put his thumb lightly on the reel to get it back in line. You can hear this at the end of the Boston Song "To be a man" off of third stage. You can hear the cymbals delayed and then they get back in sync.
.. Yeah,.. More close to forty.. 😎
Hi mate, what an awesome Effects Unit, $600 new, they came with a set of Headphones, I first heard it through a JCM900 and a 4 x10 Cab in my favourite Music Store, they had gotten a Jimmy Page sound out of it in the Store, I.couldn't believe how good that sound was so I bought the Amp and the Rockman X100. I still have mine, but the 8 X AA batteries got expensive.
Tom Schultz was a Musical genius. Very Cool Video.
Melbourne, Australia.
600 bucks in 1980 ? Surely not !
Tom *Scholz
Dream Diction , $589 close enough, worth every cent, in the Mid 80's, it sounded so Good!
Mr. K , Legend, Boston had some awesome Music.
I got my XP100 and Kasha ROCKMOD from Dynasound in Elizabeth street from the day ( i think they ordered it from KCs Rockshop who was the importer)....best days ever...Davis Music, Clements, Brashs, Rose Music all in one precinct...sadly missed but cherished days.😎🤘🤘🤘🤘
A lot of guys were blending the Rockman rack modules with their main amps back then. I know Bruce Kulick and Paul Stanley did this on the Crazy Nights and Hot In The Shade tours (confirmed by Bruce himself).
Apparently these are also on Megadeth's Peace Sells record.
Ok I keep hearing it "Sounds Like the 80s crap" What exactly is that sound because I hear many 70s bands that sounded like they could have all been from the "80's".....
80's ? … That was 70's. 1976 was the first album. ..and Tom Scholz IS Boston !! He graduated from MIT and designed his own electronics in the 1970's. Not sure when he started manufacturing and selling the Rockman, but it had to be in the EARLY 80's. He created all the music in his tiny home studio in his spare time with his own home made effects.. He played and wrote every part on a multi track recorder. The rest of the band came later, so he would have some means of touring. I'm sure some of the parts were enhanced by the new band members but Scholz deserves 99% of the credit for Boston's sound and probably most of the music...certainly the first album. (And don't leave out Brad Delps voice which fit perfect with Scholz music)
SRD (Scholz Research and Development) was founded in 1980 and released the original Rockman headphone amp (as seen in this video) in 1982. SRD falls squarely in between "Don't Look Back" and "Third Stage". Which (I think) kind of explains the difference in guitar sound between the two albums as Scholz shifted from Marshalls to his own gear.
People get ready. ....Jeff Beck Version it sounds great there!
I had one one these back in the day. My dad liked it because I had headphones. Great for practicing. If you want that Boston sound they also made a distortion generator which is straight up Boston tone.
6:43 what`s that riff?
Many artists would use the Rockman direct while blending it with a mic'd up Marshall. Blending the two elements of a mic'd up Marshall with the Rockman really covered the frequency spectrum nicely. The one sound would fill the gaps the other left out and versa vice.
Now that's a cool idea to try
Cantrell, album Dirt, this gear was responsible for the highs.
Leon, you are the gift that keeps on giving. Thank you.
Mal, check out Plague Scythe Studios if you like metal based stuff too
I need someone to fix my Rockman. best distortion ever and that nice sound, I never found anyone who could fix it
I absolutely love my Rockman. Don't use it often (will tonight!) but I like owning a piece of rock history. Plus I wanted one since I was a teen and saw it in a guitar magazine (those are things they used to have before the Internets.) YOU CAN WALK AROUND AND PLAY GUITAR! ::hooked on belt::
Hooked on is THE best way to use it
"I woke up this morning and the sun was gone. Turned on some music to start my day..."
I went broke putting batteries in this thing
Mine came with a plug in adaptor thank God, can't imagine what a hassle that must've been!
I still have my Rockman X-100, rack mount Sustainor & Chorus Delay, and Bass Rockman, the only guitar amps I use in my recording studio. During Boston's 1987 Third Stage Tour, I found out where the band was staying, we decided to go there for Brunch on Sunday. I felt so silly, but I took the face plate off my Sustainor and brought it with me. In the restaurant lobby I met and talked with Boston drummer Jim Masdea, and showed Jim the Rockman face plate, he laughed and said... "Oh wow, Tom would love that, that's his fun!" Then we walked out back where all the condo's were, we didn't go far, we didn't see anybody out there. We were just about to turn & leave, and in the distance I see a tall thin man with long dark hair walking with a little boy. I teased my girlfriend saying that's Tom Scholz, she hit me, stop teasing me that can't be him. We got a little closer, me still talking her into that it is Tom, her hitting me more but starting to believe me that it was Tom even though I knew it wasn't. Then as they were slowly walking toward us, nobody else around, my God it actually was Tom Scholz. Longer story shorter we talked a bit,i I thanked him for his music saying we were big fans, he was polite but reserved saying thank you. As I turned to leave, I almost forgot, and said... "Oh, and Tom, I'm not just a fan, I'm a customer also. He looked confused like what? Then I pulled out my Rockman face plate, and he got this huge smile and started laughing. We talked for a while, and I got my picture with him, still with his huge smile on from the crazy Boston fan who decided to bring his Rockman face plate with him, in the rare chance he might meet him, and meet him I did. I still have that awesome picture of me & Tom in my recording studio. Rockman still lives! All 3 of mine still work & sound like new.
I bought a Rockmount with a Rockman installed in the 90's. The power supply was replaced with a Tyco race track power supply, but the unit still works great!!
My word, this teleported me straight back to reform school, m'lord.
Cool demo . Thanks for paying homage to Tom Scholz . You spell his name correctly , but you pronounce it incorrectly .
This is awesome. It might not be something to use for everything, but it still has some very usable and very characteristic sounds in it, that you probably won't get anywhere else.
I got this back in the day did't like how it sounds so I sold to the pawns shops!

I've always wanted one!!! Tom Scholz rules!!!!!
Tony MacAlpine's M.A.R.S. Project Driver... all Rockman.

I’m obsessed with the original Rockman. And it sounded so much better being played through the 2nd guitar.

Sweet!!! Still have the Soloist I got for my 16th birthday in 1989. Just had it re-capped recently and it purrs like a kitten!
You heard those things all over the ‘80’s. Some bands used them exclusively (Def Leppard post-Pyromania) and I swear I hear some Rockman in underlying tracks of Lynch’s on “Under Lock & Key.”
Def Leppard in a box!
Leon Todd
Pretty much, that’s the sound right there! Interesting how they recorded stuff like he chords after the “I gotta’ know tonight” lyric on “Hysteria.” Instead of strumming the chord you hear, the individual notes are picked on different tracks direct with the Rockman clean sound to get kind of a plucky harpsichord affect.
I saw them a few months back and their tones were spot on to the album. All Axe-Fx III I believe, so i can't wait to do some tone matches :D
Leon Todd
I believe you’re correct, yeah. They used to use Marshall JMP preamps live into some direct box or speaker emulator. I’m ass/u/ming they did a tone match of the JMP’s, but I’m very curious how your Rockman tone match turns out. My singer/bassist just bought a III and wants to do a tone match of my Soloist, ironically enough LOL!
The cleans on ULaK are definitely Rockman, so it might well be that he used them for distorted overdubs as well.
No if someone can make a pedal with all the circuity and make it all switchable.....that'd be cool because the chorus and distortion in these is awesome!
The "Edge" sound would be perfect to "faten up" accoustic guitars.
We did the Play Bus, by Boss, but this was The Top Dog 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. The headphones put in L.A. Coliseum 😂😂😂😂😂
Tom Scholz is a time traveler...
I remembered these, but never played or heard one. It actually sounds really good, relatively speaking. I didn't expect it to sound like that at all. I assumed it would sound like a Peavey practice amp through headphones.
I am searching for the Rockman Distortion Generator that Tony McCalpine used for all his early recordings including the infamous REH improv' work he did in the intro and at the end of the guitar instructional video he did.
Amplitube is offering this with their new satriani amp pack
What an awesome gift, to get from a fan. Been ** years , since I've heard one of those. I think it still sounds real good. Happy New Year, man.
Goes alright hey!
Ah!! hearing that beautiful Tom Sholtz "Rockman" stereo sound brings back that heart stopping feeling I got when I first plugged into one of those babies!! A truly beautiful part of rock history!!
Breaking the Chains @ 6:00 Nice!
Sounds wicked with the humbuckers.
I love that I came to this video, bc I heard George Lynch used this effect and he's playing Breaking the Chains for the demo. Thanks
I used to run an X-100 direct to the board live. No amp on stage. It was awesome until it finally died. I would love to have 4 more. 1 main, 3 backup. I'd need nothing else!
I had one of those back in the 80's. Headphone jack was pretty finicky on mine, was still fun to play though.
Hint........ that tone is unmistikable. Maybe ya should play a bit in the tradition of the guy.....band that is famous for it.....not zack stuff. Silliness. Play material from a les paul marshall tube guy with a solid state BOSTON LEGENDARY tone thing.
I had one back then.... never could makes friends with it. Still has a processed, murky thing in the top end that I instantly don’t like.
This was awesome! Every guitarist in our band back in the 80s had one of those things. Great for individual practice back at the motel rooms.
God bless Jeff! Pretty cool! You know the older I get the more vintage gear I have! Thanks for sharing brother! Be Well! Happy New Year to All!
May your blessings be many,
May your wishes all come true,
May you stay forever young!
FYI - Tom's family name (Scholz) is pronounced "Shoalz", not Scholtz.
Marshall JCM 800 boosted, Rockman, Ada Mp-1, Gallien Krueger 250ML, Mesa Mark IIC+= Sound of the eighties!
The Rockman would emulate the Tom Scholz distortion fairly close, but it was NOISY as hell !! I doubt you could use it for a real gig, though I'm sure a few people did. Try closing a Crybaby about halfway daisy chained through a distortion pedal or a modeling amp. Test a few different distortions. You can get pretty close to the Boston patented muffled sort of fuzzy distortion with a little experimentation. (You might find a Super Fuzz pedal on Ebay -- they work great with a Cry Baby. I love that old Fuzz sound) If you haven't heard Boston's first album … GO GET A COPY !! It was GROUND BREAKING at the time and still GREAT.
The Rockman XS100 was famously used in many studios in the 80's alongside the cabinet mic actually.
The regular headphone guitar amp was for sure way too noisy but not the XS100, that was a really high quality unit audio wise. He also made some rack units, pretty much the first multi-effects actually. Tom is the most underrated genius in the industry pretty much ever.
Another thing is, we don't remember how noisy things used to be - period. In the 60's, the noise-level would be the equivalent of bad electricity noises by today's standard.
I still have mine from the 80s, doesn't work anymore though
also note, no pun Intended... Jan Hammer used the Rockman for his Miami Vice theme song, PolyMoog through the Rockman.
Beautiful lead licks, I wish I could play like that.👍🏾
LMAO the AxeFX doesn't sound anything like a real amp unless that "real amp" is a piece of 💩 Crate amp
Dude i lived on the Rockman for my late 80's intro to garage bands, luv this video, brings back some great memories, so cool
Sounded the best on the drop tuned PRS, it came alive
I have the Nobels sound studio...Rockman rip off
I still have one, unfortunately it stopped working years ago.
I have to have someone with an electronics and circuits background to see if they can fix it.
B5amps.com works on all rockmans. I just had my sustainer and chorus/delay recapped. He did a great job fixing them.
@@jmsdeco cool thanks
Haha sounds kinda bad and cheap 50 yrs later ❤❤❤❤ love the old records but using it now 🤷🤷 great review
As a 40-year pro playing 7 nights a week in a top 40 rock band .. the best song I've ever had I had to rack mount version of that and I've used every effects u23 is tubes creamers every guitar amp and my favorite yeah my favorite is the rack-mountRockman...just plug it in and go and you're suddenly Def Leppard or Eddie Van Halen poor whitesnake it's the baddest animal in the world unbelievably awesome
UFO Rock Bottom, awesome! Destroys all 80s garbage.
Interesting you played No More Tears; I had thought the sound of an X100 would be adequate substitution for a Randy-tone. Conversely, how to re-shape a Randy-tone into a Tom-tone.
PLEASE an Axe III tone match :O :O !

@@LeonTodd always a legend. Taught me so much with my first proper, proper modeler. 🙏
I was about to comment then saw @adriansmith76 took the words from my mouth!
Played through a Rockman in the studio back in 1985-ish. At the time I thought it was the ultimate, but now when I listen to it it sounds very saccharine and processed. Makes everyone sound the same, if you know what I mean. I think of it as being like fast food, tastes nice but doesn't provide nutrition.
Sounds great! 80’s!!!
Could you make patches on the Boss GX 100 that could be compared too the Rockman??
