King C Gillette: How 2 Passes Changed My Mind About this Razor

    Gillette has made razors for such a long time it is easy to call them the king of safety razors. When the King C came out it was after the Heritage was released on Amazon only and this King C Gillette would be available almost anywhere you can buy shaving stuff. The great part about the safety razor is that it is a low point of entry with an exceptional shave. This not only helps people get into the hobby of wet shaving but also gives people an opportunity to try a better way of getting a great shave.

      Gillette super adjustable 109 for 25ish euros. It's best shave I ever had for a while, for mee the budget wilkinsons-sord razor witch you get in the supermarkets it's just to egrassive for my face skin.

    The king c gilette has been my first safety razor. Where I live the are in multiple stores for around €15. I bought one on sale with ten extra blades for about €10. For that money it has been a great deal to get me started with more traditional wet shaving. It surprised me to hear it cost around double that for you.

    Like most of you, I have many razors from every day to very high end and heard the King C is a rebranded Edwin Jagger DE89 / Muhle R89. If you like up the heads (I did) of the King C to my DE89, ignoring the profile of the bottom of the base plate, the heads are identical so this is a DE89 for 15 bucks! Great shaver!

      They don't shave the same - the KCG head is way milder than the Mühle R89. Even my Weishi is more efficient.

    • @DavidV4444
      @DavidV4444 2 роки тому +2

      @@Long-Ball-Larry when I place my Muhle side by side against the King C, it’s exactly the same in every dimension and for me they shave exactly the same. The top cap bottom edge and the safety bar line up perfectly side by side.

    • @Long-Ball-Larry
      @Long-Ball-Larry 2 роки тому

      @@DavidV4444 You know what? You're right, they are very close. But than I did the same comparison of the Mühle with the Yaqi Scalloped head and the blade gap also aligns "perfectly" (the guard is a bit more protruding/thicker), but the Yaqi is a bit more aggressive than the Mühle. Then I just did the comparison with the Merkur 34c head (which is the grandmother of them all - Mühle used Merkur's head when they started making safety razors) and again they align quite nicely. I can't say perfectly though since i can't find my Tricorder atm, but I will get an evening shave with the KCG head on the Mühle handle today.
      Tiny differences in blade angle/exposure/gap can result in a quite a difference in the head's (shave's) performance.
      shavelikegrandad.blogspot.com/2014/10/analysis-of-merkur-15c-open-comb-razor.html
      You're not the only one who says they shave the same and I'm not the only one who says the KCG is milder. A YMMV thing, I guess.
      Many assume that, because the Heritage has a Mühle head, so does the KCG - maybe it does, I don't know.

    Watching from Portugal here, great reviews. I bought it and results were good but... I felt could be better, but then I tried it with Feather and BIC blades, now much better results as skin does no get irritated, also with Proraso Red products and it has been a perfect combination I am not feeling the necessity to go for another different one for the mean time.

    Nothing wrong with the KCG razor. But I am not a fan of the KCG blades. First, they are just too expensive at $.60 per blade. And they just don’t pair well with the KCG razor. Gotta try a Maggard V3 head. I have a Shave Nation Sure Grip Razor which comes with a fairly mild head but the handle is frigging amazing! deep knurling, nice weight and good handle length that's not too long or too short. I bought the Maggard V3 head to have as a spare since I assumed it was the same as the Shave Nation head. But it turns out they're totally different. The Maggard head has better casting, better chrome plating and is more aggressive yet really smooth at the same time. Pretty amazing results based on an assumption. Oh and the head on the Shave Nation and Maggard V3 look similar to the Gillette head. Basically why I commented 😂

      I prefer the heritage over the KCG too. It’s a tough handle for sure. I do have to use more touch points with my hand to get a good grip. But after that shave and the low price I think it’s worth trying if someone hasn’t. Are the Strangelets too sharp or is it something else (some people have compared it to a feather blade)

      Oh no, the Feather is my favorite and I don't find them to be comparable. When it comes to sharpness I rank the Feather number one, the Perma-Sharp number two, and the Nacet number three, and also for their smoothness. I actually prefer the Derby Extra or Astra Green or Blue over the Strangelet. I've been using the new Karve Overlander this week so maybe I will try a Strangelet in that razor. The King C. Gillette was my first safety razor. (Looked interesting at a pharmacy section)
    I was later gifted a vintage adjustable Gillette, which I found more novel yet difficult to use.
    I’m still learning about the types, sizes, construction methods/metals, brands, history, techniques, associated products, skin types, etc… and it can feel overwhelming sometimes when getting into this side of shaving.
    The King C. Gillette IS a mild razor, making it potentially preferable to newer DE shavers such as myself.
    It takes real skill and focus on learning the process before you get a shave that is close, comfortable AND you didn’t miss any spots 🥴
    My takeaway from my first few months of DE shaving is:
    Learn the PROPER TECHNIQUES and your razor INSIDE AND OUT before making any judgment calls on aggressiveness, skin products, or branding.
    A $3,000 Vintage Restored Italian Super Safety Razor will do you no good if your end result is normally a patchy, bumpy, and sometimes bloody mess 9/10 of the time. (Which some of mine were 💀)
    This type of shaving is not something you rush.
    It’s not for the impatient or fast-to-judge.
    It’s almost an art and these things are almost brushes. (Heck we even brush our faces first 😂)
    Take your time.
    Because remember? You chose this hobby!

    • @GregTardif
      @GregTardif  2 роки тому
