    A good port. The SNES cart has a special chip inside to help run the game. Seeing the side by side reminds me of how impressive the Sega Mega Drive is, especially since it runs the game with no slowdown at a higher resolution on base hardware alone, that is 2 years and change older than the SNES. They could have added more voices to the MD version, but at the time they wanted to keep the ROM at 32 megs.

    • @inceptional
      @inceptional 2 місяці тому +2

      Yeah, that chip has allowed the SNES version to basically directly mimic the Genesis FM sound while also adding in a lot more voice samples at slightly higher quality, which is a cool wee bonus to get here.
      I actually think they could have added a bit more to the SNES version, especially given how long it took to come to the system, but the port is such a high quality, with only a few concessions and even some added features specific to the SNES version (proper transparency, extra environmental effects like mist and rain in some levels, all those additional voice samples, the awesome dual 8-way movement and 8-way firing controls as standard for every SNES player, etc), that I can't really complain.
      If we can get a bunch more new indie/homebrews like this for the SNES going forward, it's going to be good times.

    Indeed, that the Xeno Crisis videogame version for the SNES, is mo pretty to look at, when the player is at a transitional menu; because of its better ram memory, that allows a better colour pallet.
    Still, when one starts to go through the gameplay, the SMD looks better; because of its mo fluid in-game animations; due to its better CPU processor.
    So, SMD version of that same videogame, is better. Because it has: mo satisfying overall gameplay, than the version from the SNES.

  • @inceptional
    @inceptional 2 місяці тому

    Well, this is very clearly a great port to SNES.
    Having said that, obviously it's not as optimal for that system as it could be, since it's ultimately just a port of a game specifically designed for Genesis from the get-go, and this SNES port is not talking full advantage of things like all the extra colours, additional background layers, Dolby Surround sound, etc. But it's still very high quality regardless. It comes with a few concessions, like the smaller size of the rooms horizontally, but adds in some proper transparency effects, extra environmental effects like mist and rain in some levels, many more voices at higher quality (courtesy of the added chip), slightly shorter loading times into the levels, and obviously a default dual 8-way movement plus 8-way firing control scheme that is pretty much ideal for this type of game and maps brilliantly to the SNES' standard controller.
    It's just great to see a new game for SNES at this quality level.
    PS. Nice to see some real high quality footage too. Most videos of the SNES version are just from it playing on a CRT recorded at a distance with a video camera, which is understandable given there's not actually a digital version of the game on SNES and most people won't have a setup where they can capture direct footage like this, so it's nice to finally get some really clean and sharp footage here. It even shows the slight difference in colours between the two versions there, with what looks to be slightly warmer tones and more contrast on SNES, which is interesting given the SNES version doesn't actually display any more colours like it could have.

  • @tay3177
    @tay3177 2 місяці тому +5

    It is without a doubt, the worst version that Bitmap has developed.
    The extra voices or forced transparencies where they are not necessary do not justify the gameplay being so unpleasant compared to any other version.
    The art of the game is deformed, from the transition scenes to the graphics of the game itself trying to fit into an aspect ratio for which it was not intended. The much more limited number of rooms variety also does not help to opt for this version. And the flickering that shows mainly 2 players, does not help to want to replay it either.
    Anyone who has this cartridge (myself included) will see the RaspBerri Pi logo serialized with a 133MHz dual-core ARM that you need to be able to process this game. If we add to that that the cartridge hardware itself is also responsible for streaming the sound, I wonder how much of the base Super Nintendo hardware is helping the game run?
    We can only be sure of the use of its PPU since it shows all limitations that cause it to remain behind the rest, such as the resolution, limit of pixels per line that it can draw or the inefficient management of sprites that it offers us in addition to the loss of useful numbers tiles in the rest of the versions.

    • @inceptional
      @inceptional 2 місяці тому +2

      Are you annoyed/upset because Xeno Crisis on SNES has a chip in the cart, which in this case has allowed it to have way more audio/voice samples at slightly higher quality than the original Genesis version?
      Using additional chips in carts was relatively common on SNES, as can be seen in a whole bunch of SNES games like Pilotwings, Super Mario Kart, Doom, Star Fox, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Mega Man X2/X3, Kirby Super Star, Super Mario RPG, Star Ocean, etc.
      Enhancement chips have also been used in recent Genesis games like Paprium and Pier Solar too.
      I'm not sure why this seems to be such a big issue for you here in this particular case.
      And the SNES version of Xeno Crisis, while it has some concessions due to the fact the original Genesis game was originally never designed with SNES in mind at all, also has slightly nicer colours, multiple proper transparency effects, additional environmental effects like fog and rain in some levels, slightly faster loading times into levels, and a default dual 8-way movement plus 8-way firing control setup that is perfectly suited to the awesome standard SNES controller.
      Now, could it be even better on SNES than it is--yes. But it's still a great port overall, so kudos to the developer there.
      Also, if Super Smash TV can run on SNES at a solid 60fps with loads of intense action on-screen and in two-player too, even when the system is still stuck running in SlowROM mode at 2.68 MHz, which is only 70% of the SNES' full CPU speed, a whopping 70% slower than the Genesis CPU and 30% slower than even the Master System CPU on paper, I think it's pretty clear that the SNES could run a game like Xeno Crisis even without an enhancement chip. Your take on the fact it uses an extra chip here is an example of correlation, not causation.
      Anyway, regardless, the SNES has a great port of the arcade twin stick shooter Smash TV (and Robotron 2084 and Total Carnage too), and now it also has a great port of Genesis Xeno Crisis as well. Awesome stuff.
      Here's hoping it gets both many more great ports like this, and indeed many great new games made specifically for it too, going forward.

    • @inceptional
      @inceptional 2 місяці тому

      @@tay3177 Who cares if there's a coprocessor. Did you get this butthurt when you found out there were coprocessors in modern indie/homebrew games like Paprium and Pier Solar on Genesis.
      For the record, "PAPRIUM is the second game, after VIRTUA RACING, to boast its own "acceleration" chip. This chip, DT128M16VA1LT aka "DATENMEISTER", was developed in-house by WM, is used by PAPRIUM primary as a audio chip and adds extra audio channels for both music and SFX. We used a back-door left by SEGA and rest assured: This is not some lame MP3 or WAV player, this is live digital audio in same fashion as the highest-end arcade machines of the 90's" - WaterMelon
      Or do you only reserve such bitter and childish reactions for new SNES games.
      At the end of the day, it's a great port. And, along with some compromises that are the inevitable result of the game not originally being designed with SNES in mind at all, it even managed to improve on the Genesis version in some notable ways. Some of those things can be attributed to that coprocessor, like all those additional voice samples and possibly the slightly faster loading times into the levels, and some just the stock SNES, like the proper transparency effects, the added environmental mist and rain in some levels, and the vastly superior default controls that every single SNES owner gets to enjoy as standard on the brilliant controller that came in the box with every SNES.
      You are definitely not in the same authentic place at all, but I personally can't wait to see more great ports like this on SNES, and ideally eventually even some games specifically designed for it and made to take full advantage of all its particular capabilities and features in the future too, be it displaying loads more colours, proper transparency effects, more background layers, full screen 60fps Mode 7 at times, 8bpp 256 colour images at times, 512x448i resolution at times, playing in Dolby Surround sound, and using all the SNES controllers' buttons, etc.
      And you can repeat it's the worst playing version all you want, but, with that amazing SNES controller and the ideal dual 8-way movement and 8-way firing plus shoulder button grenade and roll setup as standard, I've heard most people say this is actually the best playing version of the game, or certainly one of the best.

    • @tay3177
      @tay3177 2 місяці тому +4

      @inceptional No. In none of the games you mention is there a coprocessor that would be the envy of a Dreamcast.
      The problem is that even with a Raspberry Pi inside, this game is flawed in a large number of factors that make it by far the worst playable version of them all.
      Regarding the sound, have you really tested the game on the same TV against different versions? I mention this because the quality is no better than other versions, even during some loads (second and fifth bosses of the game) the sound becomes strident and intelligible for several seconds. I have been able to verify this with other users who have the game. What there is is a greater number of these voices compared to versions like Genesis. Of course, a cartridge with practically unlimited memory with that extra hardware should have even more.
      Whether it could be better or worse on SNES is simply theorizing. What this game gives us in its version is what it is. You can fantasize about "could..." "maybe..." "if he had..." the reality is that the product that has come out is undoubtedly something far below what has been offered to date.
      You talk about Smas TV and its 70% speed due to the 2.68MHz clock frequency. The thing is that you don't earn a "30%" profit with a Fast-rom. The absence of general registers of the main processor depends largely on access to RAM, and access to said memory is still 2.68Mhz. This "Fast-rom" upgrade can provide a 15-16% improvement, not much more.
      Also, you talk about games that work very differently. They are the same genre but Smash TV maintains a static VRAM, while Xeno Crisis demands a lot of tile refresh and this depends on the bandwidth and I can tell you from personal experience the pain of It's hard to configure it and try to make it dynamic without losing performance.
      It bothers me that this port does not use "more than SNES", to replicate both fluid gameplay and quality music it has had to use external hardware and has been left with the use of the tool that penalizes this type of games the most, its PPU.
      Also, this port is by far the most expensive. Due to the price increase of this version, the rest of the versions (such as the Genesis version) have suffered a joint price increase, from €54.95 to €79.95
      In short, we have the most expensive, least playable and fun version of all the versions that requires a coprocessor and its own sound hardware to come close to the rest of the versions. And yet, it is the best homebrew that SNES has received to date.

      PS: The user I responded to seems to have deleted his post after my response.
      A publication full of speculation and data misinterpreted by him in which he also makes some statements out of ignorance. The relative data he mentions about the SNES CPU is wrong. The need for chip implementation that he comments on is wrong, the comparison of Smash TV with Xeno Crisis on a technical level does not make any logic. The slightly better use of color and sound that he claims to have is a subjective opinion that he uses as a legitimate claim.
      All this because I don't have the same opinion as him after my experience playing Xeno Crisis in various versions.

      @@inceptional It's funny how your message appears and disappears like flickering in this version of the game.
      And also, with data added again wrong!
      Do you call anyone whose opinion doesn't agree with yours a fanboy?
      I can safely call you a hypocrite, because I notice that you appear in every message in the comment box when the opinion towards this version is not like yours.
      What hurt me when you mentioned that Paprium uses a chip?
      You EDITED that after my answer. I don't have the Paprium game, nor am I interested. What's the point of bringing it up?
      Here we are talking about XENO CRISIS of the Super Nintendo version, the only one that has an improvement chip and that does not use ANY other version and even so, these versions without a chip are clearly superior both playably and economically.
      I don't know why you have to list the features of a console that I've been hacking for 26 years. For this reason I am more critical of this port since it only uses the SNES PPU, when it has other qualities that could have led to another type of port being made.
      This butthurts you when people think it is the worst version when you try it and compare it with others?
      Let's talk facts about this version of Super Nintendo:
      - It has a lower resolution, a smaller playing area, a smaller amount of variety of access to each level so it has a smaller number of rooms, it suffers a lot from flickering, the art is deformed at both 4:3 and 8:7 AR, due to At the smallest amount of area the game is overwhelming, the difficulty artificially increases this fact, it has various errors in the sound when loading certain tracks, it is the most expensive version due to the need for an external processor, it lacks detail tiles in the maps, the metasprites of the bosses like the first and the third are above and sticking out from the background and their details, there is flickering even in the options menu!
      Have you played the game on Super Nintendo?
      In the text edition do you make a percentage comparison on the clock speeds between 65C816, Z80 and M68K? Is this serious? Based on these speeds, do you confirm if a game can run on one console or another?
      Do you know that one of them bases their instructions on RISC and the others on CISC? Do you know the demand for communication between components that each system requires for each instruction? Did you understand anything about what I said about Smash TV and its static VRAM versus a dynamic VRAM of continuous refresh of Xeno Crisis tiles and how this makes them internally completely different games to run?
      If you don't like my comments or opinion and experience towards this game, don't come. Misinterpreting the data you have, that ends up confusing people. And if you don't know how to interpret them, don't use them.
