'Unprecedented' Arctic weather shocks Texas

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 15 лют 2021
  • At least five people have died after rare ice storms, frigid temperatures and heavy snowfall swept across the southern US.
Subfreezing temperatures have caused massive power outages in Texas and all across the Deep South - and officials are urging people to stay home as the winter storms continue to shut roads and cause traffic pile-ups.
President Joe Biden has declared a federal emergency in Texas, where temperatures plunged to -22C (-7.6F).

@@shaverdave3644 Its called a Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) event - where the stratosphere above the troposphere, warms. This can destabilise the cold fridgid air that normally stays in place around the Arctic and bring it south. SSW's in Winter are not uncommon. About two thirds of the time when they occur, do bring colder Winters, but other factors come into play that determine how severe or not a SSW will be.

I'm in Texas and have been without power for over 30 hours, my home is so cold and my sinks are frozen. I have no running water. It's not a very good situation. I'm wearing winter gear inside the house. I've got my dog tucked into three shirts and jackets to keep her warm. We're both huddled under mounds of blankets trying to stay warm.

Right after the Civil War...Union General Phil Sheridan got stationed in remote Texas. This is what the General's opinion of living in Texas was like...and I quote: "If I owned Texas, and I owned hell...I would rent out Texas and live in hell."
He pretty much covered the type of exasperation one can feel from time to time in this state. He may not have been a native Texaican, but we can get just as frustrated with conditions as Phil Sheridan did.
      That about covers it.

I live in Austin and tonight (2/15-2/16) it’s -19C. This is the worst I have seen it in 30 years. Right now we have clear sky’s but we are expecting another storm system tonight (2/16) which will give us more sleet and snow. The roads are not safe to drive on and yes not “gritted” because this type of weather is so unusual. As such, we don’t have all the equipment required to salt and grit all the roads. With regard to our electrical issues, the Obama Administration put in place tax and federal assistance for wind and solar power, which is a “unreliable” energy source and makes up 25% of Texas energy. While at the same time restricting coal and natural gas power. BTW, I have not run into “confused and nervous” Texans to much in this storm. Maybe put out and annoyed, but not confused and nervous.

Water pipes busting, people without heat and even with heat many cant keep up with the cold. Houses and infrastructure just isnt built for this. Im freezing too and nothing can drive on our roads even with the furnace up to 78 it is having a hard time keeping up with the temps. We woke up to minus 2 degrees with wind chills of -18. @@exploringdimensions4all853 well they had to change to 'climate change' since nobody bought the 'warming' part meanwhile the climate is ALWAYS changing...Texas just decided to buy into 'green energy' and the stupid wind-farms got frozen solid LOL --- everything's bigger in Texas, that includes STUPIDITY where energy is concerned

@@exploringdimensions4all853 It actually is warming on a global basis. The warmth is a form of energy in excess of what we experienced in the past. The extra energy causes more extreme weather patterns all over the globe. Storms become more volatile and severe. A place as large as Texas can be in a deep freeze, but the average global temperature can also still be above, say a 200 year average. This will only get worse. It wasn't like folks were constantly being warned since the 1970's.

it is, more heat = more energy = more extreme weather. The earth being 2'c warmer on average does not mean its never going to be cold again, it just means the average weather will be warmer

This is not Gods ways this is mans ways of polluting the earth and suffering the consequences of severe weather storms. Gods purpose is not to cause us harm. We are the ones causing harm to the earth.

85% of Texas uses oil and gas, now look at them. The problem is they privatized their energy industry and they are the only state that has their own grid.

The problem isn't the cold (not so much anyways). Nothing in Texas is built for the cold. 1.) It's cheaper not to have to make something that's up to par, especially if cold isn't expected. So, many of the streets, piping, electrical poles/lines, houses (their insultation), garages (the metal, wood, etc.), stores (they don't have any supplies for cold to preserve themselves), streets (nothing. not even rock salt; nothing to break the ice at all and lack of snow-tires), neighborhoods (again, no rock salt, no plows, no snow shovels (regluar garden kind yes, but nothing esp for snow), residence roads, sidewalks, parks, etc. NONE of them have any equipment).
There are no teams for this snow either that were in existence prior (so the road teams, and whoever cleans up parks/fixes breaks from the snow (weight, water damage, etc.) are JUST being formed AND they can't travel to certain locations. Texas (and Oklahoma which is also having issues) don't even have DELIEVERIES coming through to get supplies since very few can fly with the storm or drive on untreated roads.

To note: I live on the East Coast and have stayed in Buffalo, NY. I know how it gets BUT there are systems, people, agencies, etc. in place to get working. I can't even being to speak on the homeless population in Texas who are out there, with all the stores closed, without any winter gear.
