    Metro: Last Light is a single-player, post-apocalyptic-themed, first-person shooter video game with stealth and survival horror elements. It was developed by Ukrainian studio 4A Games and published by Deep Silver for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in May 2013. A remastered version of the game was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in August 2014 as Metro: Last Light Redux within the Metro Redux package.
    A sequel to the video game Metro 2033, its story follows Artyom, a Ranger living in Moscow's metro system after a destructive nuclear war. Tasked with finding the mysterious Dark Ones, Artyom must venture to different parts of the metro system, and the surface filled with radiated gases, and fight against different factions and mutated monsters. The game improves on various gameplay mechanics of 2033, and introduces elements such as refined stealth and weapon customization. To help players immerse themselves further into the game's world, the head-up display is minimized, and the game relies on Artyom's equipment and numerous cues to provide information to players.
    Developed by a team of about 80 people, Last Light is not a video game adaptation of the novel Metro 2034. Instead, it is a direct sequel to 2033, with franchise creator Dmitry Glukhovsky writing the game's dialogue and main story outline. One of the key focuses was to refine 2033. As a result, changes were made to the game's animation system, artificial intelligence, and gunplay. Multiplayer modes were planned but were eventually scrapped in order to focus on single-player, which the developers hoped would "rekindle memories of Half-Life 2". Originally set to be published by THQ, which provided a very limited budget for the game's development, Koch Media acquired it after THQ's bankruptcy. A Wii U version was planned but was ultimately cancelled.
    The game received generally positive reviews from critics. Praise was focused largely on its atmosphere, world design, tone, graphics, and gameplay, while criticism was directed particularly at the artificial intelligence and technical issues. The pre-order bonus Ranger mode, marketed as the definitive way of playing the game, triggered controversy. The game was a commercial success, with its first-week retail sales in the US surpassing the lifetime retail sales of 2033. It was supported by downloadable content upon launch. The game was not novelized, the storylines unite within the book Metro 2033 by Glukhovsky as Metro 2035.

      Then again, you do end up getting stuck together in a grim quarantine room, having to worry about catching weaponized Ebola with a near 100% fatality rate. Such circumstances certainly can bring people "closer" in shorter periods of time.

    The story isn't confusing at all:
    Basically Artyom wants to find and make peace with the Dark One, and the Red Communists want to capture the Dark One and turn it into a weapon, as well as raiding D6 for weapons to control the metro.
    There, summarised in one sentence. It's really not that hard to understand if you take into account everything that you hear.

      I think people are confused because they're so insistent on using Russian dialogue. Sure, the English dub sucks balls, but at least you can understand what the hell people are saying without constantly glancing down at subtitles. I reserve the original dialogue for second play throughs.

      Must be fun being presumptuous. No, I can read subtitles, I had them on even with the dub. But I'd rather have my focus on what the game is showing and being able to understand background conversations until I've completed the game.

    Last light is objectively much better than 2033, but it's at the lose of that incredible STALKER vibe that made it so memorable.
    Playing through LL reminds me more of Half Life 2 than its spiritual roots.

    • @hemangchauhan2864
      @hemangchauhan2864 7 років тому +26

      STALKER's open world structure and immersive systems like AI buddies, unpredictable weather, etc. made up it's vibe, so there is no point comparing STALKER with Metro series other than atmosphere.

    • @DrearierSpider1
      @DrearierSpider1 7 років тому +17

      Eh, Last Light made a lot of good improvements but they dumbed down the stealth so incredibly hard in the process. Now don't get me wrong, 2033 had a lot of issues and the stealth was janky/unpredictable as hell, but I still prefer that over the "I won't ever notice you unless you run up to me while wearing neon lights and a siren around your neck" AI of Last Light. Overall, I felt like I really had to plan my moves carefully in 2033, and was harshly punished when things went wrong (whether from my own doing or the game's). Last Light took the easy way out and made the AI braindead.

    • @yosefyonin6824
      @yosefyonin6824 7 років тому +4

      in last light the enemy AI is dumbed down horribly. the controls got fucked with that stupid wheel of throwable objects and the second half of the story is retarded as hell.no LL is NOT better than 2033.

      Wait a second - it isn't about stealth/shooting that determines which ending are you going to have.. killing innocent people/mutants who aren't agressive+missing most of the morale points in the story that decides that you end up with the bad ending.. you can shoot your way through the whole game and still end up with the good ending

    • @EvilScrooge

      The game's main themes are related to your actions. It is an example of thematic Roleplaying in remediation.
      This is the best possible way to give the ending within the genre's constraints. The only way to make it better... is more content near the final parts of the game, Act 3.

    Unlike most horror games, these games are really terrifying. Not in a sense that they scare you with monsters and/or jumpscares, tell you how bad humans can get and all this crap that was told and shown a bazillion times before, but in the way they present the world after a nuclear war. It's pretty horrifying and at some degree even shocking to see the surface in these games. This is post-apocalypse done right, unlike Fallout and Wasteland where nuclear war is nothing more than a mere part of the setting. And oh boy, the plane scene...

    Those are not gold bullets...those are pre -war 5.45×39 ammo (caliber of AK 74/RPK 74 etc), probably incendiary.It is justified in the game that homemade bullets are now contain less powder.. therefore are way weaker, especially against mutants.Also,there are some amazing experimental guns if you search. The "gold" bullets can be used in an AK 74M or any other 5.45 caliber gun in the game,w which inflict massive damage,but is equivalent to "shooting money away"

    I also have to say that the Extra Missions (that are included in the game if you get Redux) are some of the best value for money you can get. I'd almost hold them on the level of Expansion Packs like Perseus Mandate and Resurrection of Evil.
    Some are a bit short, while others are incredibly long and diverse.
    That level Kyshatria is almost it's very own game with heaps of potential of it's own game.

      The only real problem is that on Ranger Hardcore there is no way to see how much ammunition and gas mask you have total. However this is fixed on the Redux versions, which you should get if you don't have the originals already. The other smaller issue is when you have a scripted scene and you're supposed to press action or melee button and it's impossible to know because there is no hud indicator. To work around this just smash action and melee if there is something trying to kill you. It's not perfect but I really love playing without any hud and wish more games would do this!

      They are not Quick Time Events btw. QTE is a series of buttons to do something which you fail if you press wrong button. In Metro you only need to press one button once, action or melee. But yeah it is an issue becaue you never know when you're actually supposed to do either so you just need to spam both :D

    This is for me the best FPS game I have ever played.. yes I know the stealth is easy, the AI isn't the smartest, etc. but the pacing is fantastic the whole 15 hours of the campaign - not one dull moment in it (buggy section in this game is way, way better than the one in HL2), game has one of my favorite stories ever, some great characters and dialogs, atmosphere isn't as scary as in 2033, but still pretty creepy and very strong, gunplay is fun, weapons interesting and cool looking, graphics are fantastic, I love the level design - some levels that were linear, than levels that had more rooms, more paths and than that one level which was almost STALKER like which I absolutely loved, the world building is out of this world, that immersion, music, mutants, the amount of charm this game has, tons of small and big details, etc..
    If 2033 was for me more like a CoD STALKER game than LL is HL2 version of STALKER.. + I actually liked the DLCs for this game, the best from them being the Khan mission and one of the best experiences in modern FPS games - the Kshatriya level
    2013 best games for me were : MLL, Call of Juarez Gunsliner and Shadow Warrior
    + P.S. If you want to have the best (Good) ending, you can still shoot your way through the whole game.. just don't shoot innocent people and non-agressive mutants .. and make the right moral choices in the game and listen to NPCs in the game world+do some side stuff like it's the case with the missing teddy bear for that kid

    One change I've noticed between 2033 and LL is the reload animations. 2033's reloads were sexy smooth, whereas LL's was choppy, like 4A took out frames or something. Not a fan of all the tacticool scopes in a post-apocalyptic setting either; where do they find the batteries to power all this?

    metro is a really good game overall but somehow i was always wondering how glorious could it be by giving a player some more freedom, some choices to be made in storyline, some side quests or anything that will give you a feeling of exploring it not just by following from animation to animation.

      Ohh the gamer for some reason seems pissy? Glukhovsky wrote the game from his own pre-release Metro 2035 version of the book. That was already a book and it existed, then it was edited again after he finished Futu.re and later released.
      Seriously, with gamers like you, no wonder gaming is so shit these days.

      Where did I whine here? Seems like you are mad at getting Rekt every single time by book readers, I get that... but I did not whine about the games here.
      Here is my plan for you to stop being a pleb.
      1) Stop being monolingual.
      2) Play more games, especially old game.
      3) Read more books.
      Then you can help gaming. Before that... just another bookburner or idiot that is destroying the video game industry out of stupidity.

      The Metro video games are an example of remediation in video games. That shows the video game medium growing up. The fact that book themes and ideas made the jump into both world design and storytelling is also extremely important.
      That is why the books being mentioned is important. An analysis or review of the game without those facts seems meaningless, devoid of depth and reason. Explaining that to someone who addresses book readers in a vile way (reminds me of the Game of Thrones untermenschen) is ironic.
      Where have I whined that the games arent like the books?

    Hey guys I need some advice, I'm a relatively new PC gamer. I've been a console man my whole life and I always try to buy my games physically but now I have a problem. I don't know if I should buy the Metro Redux collection on PC or try and find a physical copy of it on PS4. I plan to get Exodus but I'd like to have all 3 games on 1 single platform. I know the PC version will be technically superior but I like owning physical copies of my games. So what should I do?

Of course I didn't understand what the hell was going on until I finished it and realised it was the second installment. I'd always had the feeling that it reminded me of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. After i googled "metro series" to find the name of the first game, I knew that the developers used to be the head of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games.

    So what you're saying is it's the Steely Dan of video games; rich with detail and atmosphere, and works against the grain by doing what is not traditionally considered good and mixing it with something that gains near universal praise, occasionally offering some moments of intelligent social commentary, but usually just operating on a completely separate wavelength to everyone else.

    G, I generally go to your reviews for a good and informative review, but I gotta address these:
    1. It feels like a dlc with familiar settings because they're not going to make a Metro Sequel that doesn't take place in the metro. If anything, the surface is actually different because you're in marshes and mines, not ruined cities.
    2. I understand if you put down the game for a bit and came back a while later you would be confused with the plot, but I think it was rather straight forward. Artyom has to get back with the Rangers and the game is padded by being captured and sidetracked every single level.
    3. Do you think they gold bullets or did you just call them that when playing? In both games they're explained as pre-war military rounds and everything else are junk bullets made in the metro.

    • @Gggmanlives
      @Gggmanlives  7 років тому

      1. Okay.
      2. Okay.
      3. Because they're literally gold bullets?

      +Gggmanlives I'm not trying to shit on your review, I just think 1 and 2 are perspectives to consider. Or you just dgaf, which is fine, man. I only figured if you're reviewing the game, you had investment. And yeah, gold colored because of the polished metal shell, but not real gold. Literally Kalashnikov 5.45 cartridge.
