That opening fight shows how far we’ve come . Two Dan grades fighting like beginners .

Do you really think so? Apart from being old I stopped karate because sparing looked like fencing but without a foil. "Toe to toe" even with control was banned and the majority of adults were poseurs. This is fine for Kata. I really enjoyed Shotokan kata but it has nothing to do with fighting. I became frustrated with people developing the most arcane and convoluted bunkai to moves which were purely athletic. The only style which would appeal to me is Goju Ryu. Even better, I should have done Judo where you are really fighting. I honestly think Karate was much better in the old days

It is important to recognise that this was the time when Karate 1st came to England, the training was basic to the extreme and sport Karate did not exist.
I recall reading an article written by the guys involved in the 1st ever competitions in England saying that they had absolutely no idea what they were doing In regards to fighting in order to win points, all of their training was basic and Kumite was basic as a well.
    ……
I started training in 1972 as a 9 year old and was the only child training at Karate in East Anglia at that time.
The senior instructor who set up the club lived in Nottinghamshire and came down to check on us once a fortnight at 1st and then as we became stabilised once every 6 months, the rest of the time the classes were taught by the highest resident grade who was a brown belt. … black belts were few and far between.
I can attest that we were green as grass, naive and had no idea what were were doing.
    …..
Many years ago I was talking to a high ranking senior instructor of the KUGB an he expressed the following comment…
“In England we tend to hero worshiping people and admire the historic instructors of old as superhuman masters of the art, but if you really want to see the ultimate in human ability you need to look at the elite practitioners of today”

Wow, those were the days when Shotokan karate was, more or less, one big united group. I think I'm spotting Kato and Asano in those demo's too.

Old footage difficult to recognise faces, but a young Andy Sherry is clearly discernible

@@user-ts9eb7fc8n And one whom everybody seems to have missed: The late Stan Schmidt of South Africa sitting with the officials at the front row in the audience.
