    If Felix fixes his backhand technique does he have the potential to reach #1 in the rankings?

      It will help. But I also think there's another part of his game that is severely underdeveloped. Particularly on outdoor surfaces....HE HAS NO KICK SERVE. It's all flat/flat-slice, which is really effective on faster lower-bouncing surfaces. He won Basel, but struggled in Paris. Basel is fast and low-bouncing. Paris is slower and bouncier. I think his flat/slice-flat servers on outdoor surfaces tend to fit right into the slot on his opponents ROS. Also, he loses out on off-pace serving for variety.

      Simple answer is yes. A better backhand will bring him more prime time matches / appearances deep in big tournaments. This will help him work on the other ''weak'' part of his game: his mental, which will keep on improving since he has so much room to grow.

    "drilling and forcing players to do things with the ball, .......without you really talking about it" perfect explanation of how constraints and game sense based learning still benefits from, and is initially guided by the judgement of the coach, or better still a biomechanist.
    Less risk of leaving error baggage in the motor learning mind too; and most of the correction for FAA would be from the mental aspect of what he thought he should have been aiming at, and how early he was, through junior days.

    Excellent analysis coach! I didn't really analyse his bh this close but i knew something was missing as he rarely hit bh down the lines and his bh side was always under attack.
    There is another thing that you probably have overlooked, he puts his right foot forward too early so by the time he hits his bh there is no real wait transfer from left leg, leaving him with jammed rotational stroke only. Not everytime but whenever you put him under pressure. You can see that littel bit in your Korda comparison video.

      Thank you. If he improves his backhand he could definitely win slams in 2023. Great player, will be fun to watch this year.

    For me i believe his right wrist rolls a bit too much on the stroke. Both his backhand and forehand is very wristy, but in terms of the backhand i believe that extra wrist action is causing him to pull the racket closer to his body as you were talking about and therefore kills all that shoulder rotation he develops early in the stroke. In other words his hands takes over fully and the torque produced from the trunk then dissipates. Thats why if opponents hit successive balls quicker to his backhand he cant control it. Its like he holds onto the racket very tight with his right hand
    Look at the right wrist of Aliasimme compared to Korda. 7:41 . Kordas wrist is not cocked like Felix. Therefore korda can extend his arm with the racket like the extension of a hanger while felix racket will nurdle alot during the swinging phase due to his right arm being way too dominant. Hence he cannot control the shot as consistent as korda or the likes of Djokovic.
    Look at 2:35 thats way too much flexion of the wrist pre stroke.
    Probably nadal has that same flexion. I think nadal extends the racket wider (further away from the body) using that type of setup as u were saying

      LOL. I just tagged Frederic Fontang, Tennis Canada and Toni Nadal on Twitter. Let's see if anyone notices? Let's see if Felix makes a deep run in Australia, might be a good opportunity to stat out that backhand.

    that vertical tip stroke path also tends to make Felix brush up on the ball too much on the bh side. So often, though less so this winter indoor season, his bh just floats a bit.

      Very true. The ball will sit up and be attacked. It will be interesting to see if his team addresses it after watching the video.

    Super interesting. FAA's backhand has always been a weakness but he has actually improved it since he got on the tour. Initially he used to shank it very often and had no depth. The jammed issue makes sense

    I suspect that his problem may have arised from playing baseball or Ice hockey at young age and his hitting side must have been BH side then.
    I have played loads of cricket all my childhood and I started playing tennis in my late 20s. I'm jammed on forehands side way too often but my one handed backhand is god sent. I'm like Gasquet i run around my FH :-)

    Great analysis! I always thought Felix's backhand was a bit weak. He clearly doesn't hit that shot with a lot of depth in the court, and he rarely goes line with the backhand.

    I don't know. Felix's backhand seems to be very smooth and well executed. If he were jammed, it would show up in the stroke. But it's like a normal shot for him. And when he plays, I do not see any reduction in the angles he hits his backhand. I think it's possible that he contacts the ball more in front of his body than Korda. And that's why you don't see both hands at contact.

    • @brodaism
      @brodaism Рік тому +2

      You should watch his matches, everyobe tries to breakdown his backhand. Due to this weakness he couln't hit bh down the line so people were not bothered to cover his down the line bh because he rarely hit one. I think he has improved with UNCLE Toni but old habits are hard to get rid off.

    The camera is about a foot or two from the center line correct?

  • @chrispope5877
    @chrispope5877 Рік тому

    I don’t disagree with anything you said, but the reason why Felix’s hands are closer is because he rotates more - his chest is almost completely forward on contact which then pulls his hands more center, vs the other guy in the video who on contact does not rotate as much which allows his hands to be more away from his body on contact

    Is it even possible to change the backhand motion he has played with for years ? It must be stuck in his muscle memory. I imagine it is tough to break, especially in the middle of the tennis season… And even if he does he has to get used to it !

    • @TennisUnleashed
      @TennisUnleashed  Рік тому +3

      Great questions all around. It's definitely possible to change it, Casper Ruud had the same exact spacing/contact issue and was able to change his technique between the 2022 US Open and the 2022 ATP Nitto finals. That is extremely hard to do but he was able to work on it a bit and it paid dividends for sure. He still has more work to do to clean it up but a good quick improvement.
      I meant to make the Felix video just after the US Open but didn't get the chance. His team is in a "tough position now". Do you try to change it during a small lull this season or do you wait for the off season in November/December when most players make technical changes to do it? I'll be keeping an eye on that backhand the rest of the year to see if they try to tweak it.

    In the vid Korda and FA, are differents angles of view, you dont see the right hand in this angle

    • @TennisUnleashed
      @TennisUnleashed  Рік тому +1

      But in every other angle you can clearly see his hands, this is consistenty an issue for Felix. I don't post content that I haven't thoroughly examined for hours on end before it ever hits UA-cam. Hopefully his team fixes it before 2024. Otherwise his opponents will hammer that side. Thanks for watching.

    What if he knows, but just prefers to hit as he is? His forehand comes naturally l to him, but backhand obviously doesn't. Let's see how it goes. Imagine pointing out all the cracks of backhand to Berrettini, but he still cannot fix anything over years.

    • @TennisUnleashed
      @TennisUnleashed  Рік тому +4

      It's very possible that he knows and doesn't mind the "deficiency". For most high ranked players these "issues" can mean a huge difference in wins and losses and career earnings. It could very well be that he's not open to changing the spacing/technique. I've seen it before with pro players I've worked with ;)

    • @DavidGao1988
      @DavidGao1988 Рік тому +2

      @@TennisUnleashed I agree. Little details make huge difference at that level. Thiem shortened his forehand takeback to excel at hardcourt. Even the big 3 perfected little details along the career. The "deficiency" in technique may also cause unnecessary injuries. We will find out how Felix progresses in the next 5 years. Thank you for the excellent analysis!

    • @TennisUnleashed
      @TennisUnleashed  Рік тому +3

      Unfortunately I didn't get this video out until the end of December so there was no time left for his team to tweak that backhand technique. They either need a large window of time during the season to tweak it or they'll have to wait until the offseason in November/December to make the change.
      Watch his highlights against Medvedev this week, the backhand fell apart in certain situations. He shanks quite a bit off that side, he'll slice it to avoid coming over it and he camps out pretty far in that backhand corner so he can hit more forehands instead of taking backhands. All the obvious signs are there of it being a "subpar" stroke.
      Like Felix a lot as a player, let's hope they eventually make that change. I tweeted it out to his team awhile back.

      @@TennisUnleashed thank you for the reply and the previous analysis as well! I definitely noticed him deferring to that slice a lot and I wish he would put in time/work to improve his backhand.
