I really appreciate the inclusion of Sarah, she gives a realistic view of how difficult some of the stuff is that you make look easy. Kind of like putting an average person in the olympics for comparison.
realistic view?!? More like a view of someone who've never used a tool before.
She may be better suited making him a sandwich! 🤣
Wow, I just found this, and thank you for sharing. Now I know how to fix my bench after 8 years sitting in the garden, not knowing how to fix it. Cheers
I sanded 25 yrs of teak and mahogany, sand clean and varnish repeat many times on yachts. You guys did such a great job and together , very refreshing as lately people vlogs have been picking up distasteful comments. Good for you
I am so going to appropriate my husband’s power washer to clean up some treadle sewing machine bases! From one nurse to another, you did a great job Sarah! Y’all keep safe!
I knew it!! Sarah actually does all the hard work behind the scenes. Great project y’all did together. Congrats.🎉
Lol so true!
What can be better than family teamwork! You guys did well! You have a beautiful family. I am truly glad for you!
I am literally getting ready to do this today! Thank you for such an in depth tutorial. I pray that mine is even half as nice looking. Yours is incredibly beautiful.
I recently restored a cast iron park bench too. It was really interesting to see the way you approached the project and compare it with my approach.
my wife and I have this exact Edwardian cast iron bench frame. We replaced the slats with white oak slats. We used a oak stretcher on the bottom versus the angled iron seat support. Ours also had the curved iron center support. Yours tuned out great
Thank you for the video. I always wanted to have bench in my garden and I found a iron frame. Start looking for information on UA-cam and found your video it was very helpful. Now I have the idea how to do step by step. Thanks again.
I'll be doing this for a friend soon, so this is really helpful for me! Looks like a lovely project and you made the owners happy!
I too have have two old reclaimed cast-iron bench ends. But not the wooden slats. Nor do I have the metal 'straps', or the nuts n bolts. Think I'll watch your video, though... might help me with my restoration. Thanks for sharing.
The strap is just a piece of iron or steel you can make yourself with a torch and hammer
Enjoyed the video James & Sara. That was really nice you two doing a project together, especially for Sara's Grandparents. Those benches turned out very well. Thanks for taking the time to produce the video. Y'all take care and God bless.
Thanks Ron. This was a fun one for sure!
Lovely work guys, and a lovely ending, the epoxy resin on the wood was interesting, have to try that on some outside projects.
A for effort and jumping right in there to get them done Mrs W. Oddly l just did the very same thing for my daughter too.
You did a fantastic job on the garden benches, they are lovely
I had low expectations for this one, it’s just a bunch of slats after all, but it was actually very cute. Thanks.
I was not sure of making a video on this one. but doing it with my wife was a lot of fun.
@@WoodByWright it was a simple job, but it was still well done with the same level of quality that you do in the others, well done :D
Felicitaciones, muy buen trabajo en equipo, saludos desde URUGUAY
James, what stood out for me was your wife's South Africa Rotary t-shirt. Greetings from Cape Town. Really nice bench and you guys make a lovely couple.
Thanks. Yes she spent a year and then another summer in SA.
Glad I just found you! I don't have a table saw & everyone else on UA-cam was showing how to restore this with tools the avg person wouldn't have. You showed me what was possible with what I've got! Thanks again.
glad to help!
Mad respect for y'all ripping boards with a hand saw. Mad respect.
Old fashioned tools, lovely and a lot of work.
I like this colab work with your wife. With both of you working on it, it makes a wonderful present for grandparents.
I was going to ask if it was for yourselves as it's make a nice item in your own garden or yard, something you worked on together.
I fully understand the struggle when she stands on a box for extra height I, myself, a really short woman standing at 4ft 9 in.
Nice she is 4' 10" so fairly close there.
Bless the lady for her efforts. Good job, both of you 😊👍
I just picked up that exact same frame for my wife for her birthday! We're going to redo it this upcoming spring
Sounds like a fun time!
Congratulations to the hard-working wife!!! Benches are beautifl. thank for video.
Lovely to see you working together and that takes patience and respect. So respect! Lovely result too. 👍😊
First! I am salvaging this exact bench. It looks awesome!
Nice congrats on the first!
@@WoodByWright better warn the grandparents-in-law, looks like someone's after their bench, if this commenter is doing that exact bench. (And not just the same model). Hahaha!
Really fantastic work, guys! It turned out beautiful!!! 😃
Family work is always a great family time! 😊
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I have just done one for my back garden, seeing the both of you on it I have desided that it should take my Weight
I recently did a similar job using cypress (which is what I had available). I plowed a groove down the length of each of the bottom slats and set a half slat onto it to form a tee, making sure that each piece bowed upwards along its length. The somewhat bendy slats are now stiff and strong, even with my huge posterior sitting on them.
Best video I’ve seen all year. Could sleep with all the hand tools going on.
Good for you guys. A family project!
She looks like she had a lot of fun doing this project!
That was a cool video. No crazy fancy joints or anything but just a simple bench restoration. Nice job on them both of you.
Amazing video! I wish I knew how to get my wife to help me in my projects! Beautiful yard too btw.. But I don't like being so close to the expressway. Too much traffic noise.
Greetings from South Africa. Interesting sweater the wife is wearing. Nice job, teamwork!💯
Sarah lived in south Africa for a year!
I loved seeing Hazel and Larry's reaction! ❣️❣️❣️
Excellent work on a worthwhile project.
Very cool that you used hand tools for cutting the slats, planing the edges, drilling the holes. Should last forever.
I enjoyed watching you both working togethr. Especially the little supervisor asking why painted brown. I would have liked to hear what paint, primer, wood, etc... Used. I can see old school tools used which was great
In the description there's a link to my second channel. That channel is where I do all of the how to and talking through the projects. I have all the information on how to build there. This channel is now dedicated to the average easy watcher on UA-cam that doesn't really want to know much.
Spotted that ATEM Mini... it will change your life. ...Well your livestream!!
Yep. I've been using it for the last couple weeks. I ordered it back in late January and it finally came in. Been loving it.
Just what I needed. Got one ready to go. Nice job by the way.
Too funny! I live near Green Bay and I can honestly say, I never see anyone wearing a Bears hat!! You must be pretty popular in Illinois wearing that hat. Great job on the restoration. I did the exact same thing to a bench left by the previous home owners. I painted mine though.
Surprisingly there are far more Green Bay fans down here in Rockford than there are bears fans.
@@WoodByWright the most recent successes wins the most fans for some reason.
Oh wifey, you are an awesome NURSE.. Our very first responders.
Amazing video and amazing team work!
Loved the old tools!! Great job 👏
Wonderful job, the benches looked amazing. Loving watching your channel all the way here in Sunny Wales, uk 👍
Great work. I loved the collaboration!
Amazing job with this, it looks so great!
Smart people here...note the Green Bay Packers hat...lol. I'm a huge Packers fan, have to be. My dad graduated high school with a 4 year full ride to Wisconsin State...now UW-Platteville. His Jr or Sr season they missed a bowl game by a coin toss and finished 5th nationally for small colleges. They were cleaning out their lockers when 2 well dressed men walked in, met the head coach and went into a conference room. A few minutes went by and the coach stepped out and called my dad and 2 other men to join them. The 3 players went back in and sat down to find out all 3 were offered tryouts at Green Bay for the Packers. Dad ultimately declined as he was 5'9" 180#'s and an 11 year veteran Fast-Pitch Softball Pitcher and Class A. Class A was World-Class at the time and went on to pitch 38 years. Anyhow, the 2 men that represented Green Bay were none other than Bart Starr and Vince Lombardi himself. If my dad warranted an offer from Vince to try out at Green Bay he seen something in dad. Thus the Green Bay Packers get my allegiance, think anyone would respect them the same as well.
Now that is a cool story. It is a team that has always interested me with the history and organization.
Charming video! 💖
I just picked up a falling apart rotted bench so ready to refurbishe
Very nice. Great teamwork.
Excellent work James. Now, what is next?! Take care.
I am working on a coffee table now.
That is nice. I wish I could get my wife interested in woodwork.
It sure is a lot of fun with her!
I'm finding that the more I do, and especially so the more I do things for her/both of us - I recently made Teresa a breakfast tray, and I'm currently building us an old-fashioned brick, wood and glass greenhouse - the more she takes an interest. She's started lending a hand with things, like some recent fence repairs, and now the greenhouse. She's even gone and helped me buy the wood to re-roof my shed workshop, a job that had been on hold, due to my lack of funds/materials. ❤️
Came out great. Wonderful job. 👍
Nice work...by hand!
No power tools, admirable old school work!😀
Very nice! You didn’t show any arguing! Lol
Awesome job!
Looks great. Hope to see more projects with you working together. BTW - I noticed Sara using a power drill to attach the frames. I thought you only had hand tools in the shop !!!
Well I did use it outside...
Lol I have a pile of power tools too. I have spent more time with them then hand tools as that is what I grew up with
Nice job. They look great.
Turned out great!
I was amazed by the fact that no electric devices were used and all done with hard work! You are the ninja warriors of the wood!
Good job!
God Bless you both...
I've got exactly this job somewhere on my 'honey do' list.... The list is a bit long though.
No matter how much I do that list keeps growing.
Awesome job guys!!!
Absolutely stunning!
Very nice. I've done 2 myself.
A trick with the phillips screwdriver is to use vice grips to turn the shank while you push inward. Some larger phillips screw drivers have a squared off shank near the handle so you can turn it with a wrench.
Or.... Craftsman screwdrivers have handles that a 1" box end wrench will engage for extra leverage.
Nice job guys🤗
Very nice job. I have the exact bench I want to make nice. Cool to use no power tools but at 72 and female I don't think I can. Do you think having Lowes cut the wooden slats would work if I just replaced them? I know wood is much more expensive than 2 years ago.
Wow really good job 👌
lovely work
I’m a nurse too! What kind of nurse is Mrs W?
She is a float pool supervisor but has worked on many different floors.
The apprentice learns quick!
When will we hear you singing while planing ??
Nice job 😁👍
I’m rehabbing what appears to be the exact identical garden bench. What is the brown/orange product you spray on the cast-iron before you spray the black? I assume some sort of rust retardant? I’ve got black rustoleum, but perhaps I need a primer of another rust inhibiting product.
It is a self etching primer. It bonds with the metal far better then strait paint.
Great job. Love the use of all hand tools. Can you tell me what type of wood you used? Thank you
It is white oak.
It was great to see how many dwarf outfits Sarah has. When can we expect to see her own channel? The Gnome Queen WoodWorker ? Lol. I’m in trouble.
Yes you are....
Once again...the dog house for Alan! 🤣😂❣️
@@myrawright282 I think it's a palace for him now he spends so much time there 🤣
Great JOB! Wondering how many hours you spent total to restore it! TY
We probably had about 4 hours on each bench
would love to have my wife help me on jobs outside. i just get the honey do's lol. so much nicer to work together especially as even after all these years i just love being close.
I could not agree more!
Loved this video
Good job, a lots of efforts 👏 👍 9
Great job! I'm wanting to do the same thing with a couple ends given to me.
What was the length and width of the new boards? Where all the boards the same width?
They were 4' long and two different sizes. Here is the how to version with more info.ua-cam.com/video/AQ7Ibimxokg/v-deo.html
Very nice
Beautiful result. I'm going to copy every step. What is the burnt orange paint on the cast iron ends before black was applied?
I think that was just odd lighting color. It's a self etching primer prior to the recoat. If you really want to I have a second channel where I do all of the how-to. Anytime there's a video on this channel there's a corresponding video on the other channel where I talk through all the steps and provide all the information. This channel is more for the easy watching who do not really want to do it they just like watching it.
@@WoodByWright Thank you, got it. Does experience tell you if the Total Boat Penetrating Epoxy is ok to put on stained wood? Their description on Amazon says, 'Seal bare or new wood to protect against damage'.
If it is just stained then it will work fine as the stain does not seal it.
So I just did the Total Boat Penetrating Epoxy on the top and sides of my boards. Product instructions say 2 days to cure at 80 degrees. From your experience do I need to wait the full 2 days before flipping and hitting the other side? Also what grit do you sand this product with before applying the Marine Varnish? Thanks
Nice job. What kind of wood is that? I think the one I have to do is maple.
White oak. It is far more rott resistant than maple for a lot of the other hardwoods.
Did you replace the metal bracings on the bottom or were those original. If you replaced them with new ones, where did you purchase them from. I just got a cast iron bench ends but it didn’t have any of the bracings and I desperately want to refinish it. Thanks. I really enjoyed your video.
Mine were original. But they were just straps of mild steel 3/4 in wide you could go buy them from the hardware store and drill holes for each panel.
That's a lot of slats!! :) I've done a number of these benches and love doing them.I am curious about the epoxy and varnish and have a few questions. How much does a quart of the epoxy cover or how many slats (I assume you did one good coat of it?
I see you did two coats of the varnish with a light sand in between. I do the same (sanding). So same question on the varnish. How many slats can you cover with two coats per quart?
Thank you and always enjoy your videos!
btw, I was recently told that Helmsman Spar Urethane was the bomb so I tried it on a bench. I even used three coats with sanding in between. Utterly disappointed at the outcome. After 3 weeks is was as if I had left the raw wood out! Never use it outside again.
I cover a lot of this on the second channel where I talk through the project. The epoxy covers a lot I only used about 1/8 of a quart on this one. I did 5 coats of varnish sanding between each. Ya there are a few brands like that that I just don't like.
Mom has three of these in the same shape, unfortunately Mrs. W is a better wood worker than I am
Only because I have a good teacher 😉
They’re beautiful
New subscriber , great video 💞
My husband and i are getting ready to finish a bench. We were wondering where you buy the braces on the bottom of the bench?
For mine they came with the old bench. But they are just strips of steel. You can pick them up at any big box store and drill the holes bend them to shape and a vice.
Amazing!!!
I think more people should show their partners how to use all the tools. My husbands tools all rusted after he died as I didn’t know how to use them and therefore could not teach my sons as they were only young when he died.
So beautiful.
Good woman and sweet Green Bay hat!
Take a seat...? It would appear that "Mom jokes" set the bar even lower.
Sorry, Sarah, about the height jab, had to be done! Hahaha!
Lol I love it!
What size did you cut the slats to. I'm repairing this same bench, but it didn't have boards. I'm mainly focused on the width. Thank you if you see this and reply.
Most of them were 2 in but the ones around the tight radius were inch and a half on mine. You should just be able to measure from center of screw hole to center of screw hole and then subtract a little bit for the Gap you want in between them.
