How were you able to get the top black ring off?

A big set of pliers. I think I had a rag to keep the teeth from messing it up too much. Still did a little in one spot though.

Hey also, it's threaded. So you have to unscrew it like a nut from a bolt. Just pulled mine out of my bag to make sure.
