Doing this job on my Accent right now. I appreciate this so much. I have no one in my life who can show me any of this stuff, but with videos like this I can do simple jobs and gain confidence in my ability to work on cars. Basically life changing. Thank you!

Dude great job! This is one of the nicest EXPLAINATION videos with details out there. Most people say they are going to show you "how to do" but they are not usually thorough in showing as well as mentioning major and minor details. I salute you on your work my friend and look forward to seeing more videos. I am attempting to do my father-laws struts and eventually I gotta change a Lexus rx300 struts. This video gave me a great understanding of what to do and how to thoroughly and correctly do this job.

Good job Jim. I find most people hate having struts replaced due to the huge price tag for the parts.
I installed new Monroe quick structs on the front of my 4x4 Chevy Trailblazer (110,000 miles), new upper A-frames, upper and lower ball joints. Rides like a new one now.

Thank you Jim! I purchased front struts for my Hyundai Accent which were seriously bad - and wow! Big difference! I'll replace the rear struts eventually because of a slight bounce there as well. The front ones I had a mechanic do because I didn't have the tools. But for the rear, I'm getting my own tools and do it myself. You made this almost foolproof. Yu da man!

Hi Jim - Last night I tried to replace the drivers side assembly, and there were two major problems: the first was removing the molding from around the three bolts at the top. There were actually three panels that covered nearly the entire side of the car that had to be removed, along with the (breakable) plastic screws. Not damaging the panels proved to be very difficult. Since the car has seen a lot of visual abuse over the years, (some of the plastic disintegrated in my hands) I wasn't overly concerned, but it wouldn't have been called a professional job.
The second problem was that the top three screws were rusted to the point that there barely any facing on the nuts. I had to cut the side of the nut with a hacksaw (which caused additional damage to the plastic panels), then split the nut with a masonry chisel. Since my car has been in MN all its life, I was surprised to see this amount of rust so far from the ocean (i.e., salt).
After 1.5 hours, I had to quit due to the lack of sunlight, and didn't take out the first assembly yet. But I got the worst of it done, which was the rusted bolts.
You didn't mention the year or model of this Accent, was this a newer model? I have a 2002, Accent Hatchback - L

I am adding a new comment as opposed to replying to my own, because I want it to be seen. As you probably already figured out, the strut was broken. After comparing it to the new strut, I found the spring had shifted in the top plate, which was why it was expanding. So I apologize for questioning you, but I will say to all listening, if your know the strut is broken, be ready! You may even want to consider paying someone. I was able to get the compressor on it because I was changing the cv axle, so I had everything out of the way. If you are going by these instructions, you will not have room to get the compressors in there. The new strut went in exactly per the video, thanks Jim!

The quick strut assembly only costs about $35 more than the bare strut on my Nissan Murano but the strut assembly costs $100 more than the bare strut on my Hyundai Santa Fe. I really do like the quick struts and I didn't have to mess with that spring compressor. I can see why mechanics like them so much.

From my vast experience of watching many UA-cam videos it could be that you have some worn out bushings or ball joints causing things to play/move and therefore you're still hearing those noises. I think Jim has another video on this if you're still having the problem (and haven't fixed it).

So why don't you bother mentioning that the old strut springs will start to expand immediately, and if you do not hurry, the strut pushes down on the axle? I actually got bit on your video about changing the drivers side axle because the strut immediately started expanding. I had to borrow McPherson spring compressors and compress it enough remove it. Now I am stuck replacing the strut. I hope that the new strut assembly comes compressed to where it will fit in per your video. I am a little skeptical to be honest.

Here is an example of how bad mechanics will rip you off. I redid my front suspension 3 years ago myself with 1a auto parts (trq struts). My car is a beater and I don't try to put the best parts in it or anything like that. I have a very loud creaking from the front passenger strut area and couldnt pinpoint the component. I took it in and paid $25 for the suspension evaluation at pep boys. They said it was the strut mount (bearing) and also a driver side outer tie rod was bad. They quoted me $1340 to fix it !!!!! LMFAO! So, i called 1a and they said my parts were under warranty and sent me out a new strut and new tie rod no charge! The strut is a $130 part and the tie rod anywhere from $40-60 if I was to buy them new again.

Not so much a problem in the Southern States. Salts and chemicals are not used to melt ice and snow on roads. For the most part, undercarriage of southern cars look great.

No road salt down in TX so I never see this much rust.

I recently replaced the front rotors and pads on my daughter's 6-year-old Honda Civic Coupe. I was ready for rusty parts...like the ones that I'd seen on these videos, but to my surprise...with the vehicle being driven exclusively in North Carolina...almost no rust. When I went to remove the rotor screws, they looked like the day they were put in at the factory. What a difference between cars here and the snow belt cars.
      Thanks for the video...much appreciated.
