What I wouldn't do to go back to the 1980's. Such a simpler time. Movies like this are the few portals to the past that have to suffice.
100% agree. I was in high school from ‘83 to ‘87. I remember the stir this film caused because of the CGI.
Yep, got quite a bit of '80s movies that take up some good space in my movie library. High school '81-'85.
The reason the CGI looks dated is because this was the first groundbreaking attempt at CGI ever in a motion picture
Well, technically Star Wars was the first with few seconds of the trench diagrams in the briefing scene. Tron then came out with 15 minutes of CGI in 1982. Then The Last Starfighter had 27 minutes of CGI.
@@donsimpsonshead8809 well Technically The first feature film to make use of CGI was the 1973 film Westworld. The reason The Last Star Fighter was groundbreaking was because It just wasn’t computer graphics, there was Texture, shading, colorfill, and entire scenes involving complex 3D animation never attempted before to look real. Computer graphics were cool, but Starfighter took it to the next level. Unfortunately, CGI will never age as well as practical effects always look better in 4K.
@@donsimpsonshead8809 Yeah, but there is a major difference for The Last Starfighter - which really makes it the first. In Star Wars, Tron, and Westworld - those uses of CGI were SUPPOSED to be computer imagery. Even the Genesis device presentation in Star Trek II, showing the transformation of a moon into a planet was supposed to be a computer generated proposal for the device. The Last Starfighter was the first film that used CGI to represent actual, real and physical events in the story. The technology was not where it needed to be for that, but it was the best example at the time of trying to pull off something realistic.
I always appreciate the honest reviews! I've got the Arrow Blu-ray and really like it, so I think I'll save forty bucks and stick with that 👍
Grig, the lizard guy/mentor was played by Dan O'Herlihy, who was Conol Cochran in Halloween III. They really kept it in the family. Lol.
About the CGI, this was groundbreaking, it was a new thing to try. It's hard to think that way since the use of CGI for the past 30+ years has so much prevalence. When I saw this for the first time back when it came out, this and Tron was just something special. It did have a video game look, but look at the final scene. You see what computer graphic effects look like on a arcade game, then when was done to represent the reality... in the movie. Arcade games did not have the power to create what was done on the movie. Something nowadays you can almost do on our smartphones (maybe not Marvel quality though many would beg to differ on the more recent releases), so all the long drawn-out typing is trying to say is think about the times and the advancement of the period.
was one of my all time favorite movies an 80s' kid !!!! im 42 now and so excited to own this on 4k !!!!!
Nice review, appreciate the honesty when you do comparisons to help save money if it’s not necessary to spend more!
The flying Car as the door was opening, HDR, and colouring, I did a phone camera picture of it, it reminded me of Back to the future, i think they got the Car idea from this film, and Knight Rider, maybe too.
I love this movie and I have the 25th anniversary blu ray, so I never grabbed the arrow version. Can't justify going from blu ray to blu ray. But this was a no brainer, and I pre-ordered as soon as I found out its coming to 4k. This is right up there with Goonies and Neverending Story for me as a big part of my childhood movies.
I've got the 25th anniversary blu-ray, and the existing Arrow blu-ray. The difference is mindblowing. You're in for a treat with the 4k!
@@rickmoreno7166 can't wait!
I’ll be going from the old Universal Blu-ray to this one, so I think it’s gonna look noticeably better.
Body horror Images: Huh, I loved your terminology, Minion Buddy...
😆 🤣 😂
Great review buddy. May have to upgrade depending on the blue ray version I have. Lance Guest was in Jaws The Revenge as well lol.
Case to be made a 4k capture of an old property then aliased x2 to 2k will be the best looking option if there's noise or jagged edges
Love this movie! The visual effects are amazing in this movie, I’m a visual effects artist and I was seriously impressed with the effects in this movie when I watched it again
as much as I love this movie, it's not really a movie that I'm in a rush to get a 4K so imma stick with my Arrow blu ray version
This 4k release is the edited version, it does not have Maggie sticking her tongue down Alex's ear,or the part where the bad guy kills someone by stabbing some Alien with the spectre and you see Alien blood. A shame.
I wondered why I didn't hear music at the part with the beta unit. They went woke and cut out stuff. Thats stupid.
Did they do that with blu ray?
Ken are you a movie soundtrack collector? You seem to know a little about the soundtracks and I appreciate that. I have a small soundtrack collection and The Last Starfighter has an excellent release from Intrada. I recommend it if it is not OOP already.
I need to watch it before I decide on the 4K or Blu-Ray, although if I like it enough to buy it, then I'll probably go for the 4K.
I'm so conflicted. I bought the blu ray from Arrow like last year and absolutely loved it. I am a lifelong fan of this movie...so I feel like upgrading is inevitable for me. I am willing to risk waiting for a sale on this one since it would be a double dip for me. Actually I've owned this movie on vhs, dvd, blu ray, and arrow blu, so maybe a 5th purchase for the 4K? My goodness.
You might as well get it if the movie means that much to you. You may be safe waiting for a sale as I doubt this is that high on a lot of people's radar. From a marketing standpoint, I don't see why they didn't wait until next year to drop this, since it'd be the film's 40th anniversary. But anyone who held off on the Blu-Ray could snatch up the 4k. If it's a Top 10 or so movie for me, I'm not waiting on a sale, but for most movies I'd wait for one.
@John Public those are all really good points.
Thanks ken for the review I agree the CGI looks dated as would Tron. Since I have 2009 blu ray it going to be a major upgrade which doesn't hold up to Arrows blu-ray.
I would absolutely upgrade that 2009 bluray to this 4K.
@@midlevelmedia it's on order Ken since last Monday can't wait to see this new transfer. Still remember when I watched the VHS in 85 it was just a fun coming of age movie.
thank you ken i will pass on this one and keep the bd.
When the 4K came out, bought the Arrow Blu-ray used like new for $10, still had the poster. I think I’ll keep it!
I have it on laserdisc...just bought the arrow 4k for my 4k projector and 150" screen YA BABY!!!!!!
Remember in the 1980s series Automan he would create computer generated cars and helicopters? They should have had a line in this movie to say that the ships they were flying in were not physical ships but solid hologram creations, which would explain why they look like video game graphics.
I already have the BluRay Arrow video copy. The only reason I want the 4K is . I like having them in all 3 Formats DVD, BLURAY and 4K UHD
Just watched it on 4K looks pretty good but the sound is what blew me away, was so loud and sounded great
This would have been the first movie i bought on VHS, at the time there was no home movie collecting, there would have either been recordings off TV or pirated video rentals. then I saw this movie on the shelf. I would have worn out the tape
I'm waiting on mine! Even though I already have the blu-ray version but I love that movie, used to watch it alot as a kid when it first came out! It's funny that's the first time I remember Lance Guest, in this, then later when I re-watched Halloween 2 I realized he played Jimmy and Catherine Mary Stewart had a huge crush on her remember her first on Days of Our Lives!
Seems like a good one to pick up. Great Review Ken
Thanks for the input. Like some viewers on the channel, I already own the Arrow Blu-ray. Hard sell at the current price point.
Btw, I had not made that connection with Alex and Luke Skywalker until now. I suppose that, upon watching TLS for the first time, I had expected or wanted Alex (protagonist) to eventually return to earth (unlike Luke who said, “There’s nothing for me here,” about Tatooine to Obi Wan in a New Hope). (Of course, Alex’s young love interest and his trailer park ‘family’ is still at the Starlite-Starbrite during his departure.) The desire to leave home and find purpose, or answer the call, is there in both stories. (One might even add pessimism and the uneasiness and impatience of youth.)
I haven't seen you mention it but do you remember the sci-fi movie skyline? If not it's understandable but it's a really good looking 4k in my opinion. The movie not so much. The night shots at the beginning of the city look amazing in 4k.
You can also catch Catherine Mary-Stewart in Weekend at Bernie’s another great 80’s flick
Still have my VHS copy lol. I also got the previous Blu ray so not sure about the 4k upgrade. Doesn't sound like it's a massive update but I'm tempted as this film is from my childhood and has massive nostalgic value for me so night be worth the double dip.
Thanks for the review 👍 will stick with the Blu-ray
Cool review of the last star fighter Ken I'd like to see the movie👍👍🆒🆒
Been a fan of this movie ever since I saw it at the Drive in way back in the summer of 1984
I know that this is off topic but I have to ask....What do you know about the Bond franchise? I just wonder why classic Bond isn't on 4k yet. I wasn't a big fan of Daniel.
The Arrow blu ray is really good already...I may just hold on to that and get different 4K. Love this movie though.
Whoa. Never seen this movie. I feel like the first 20 seconds of this review just spoiled everything for me… damn.
Nah. Plenty of twists and turns.
Arrow, steelbook please!
Wasn't this the first movie that had mixed live action + cg schenes? This movie is part of my growing up experience. I was holding out on the 4k, but it's really expensive and sounds like the cg does not fit well in 4k with the rest of the movie, so I'm going to opt for just getting the (very cheap) bluray. Thanks MidLevelMedia!
For now, I went with the Blu-Ray from Hamilton Book based on your review.
Thanks very much for your Fantastic review. Will be ordering.
I love Arrow but a $50 msrp for 1 disc 4k movies is really wild. Add in a digital copy or somethin for that much
I have an older copy of it on bluray way before the 2020. this will be a day one Pick up for me
Price dropped to $24.99 at Best Buy release day.
This was a questionable double-dip for me. I am glad to have this in 4K - but it's essentially the exact packaging & format as the Blu-ray. The 4K slip is actually of cheaper quality as it's printed on very plain stock. On the Blu-Ray slip there was texture and really feels like quality. Not so much of the 4K. The 4K looks ok but was not worth a $35 "upgrade". Now if I could get them to ship replacement for my Dune set... boy that's becoming a nightmare as they really don't want anything to do with me unless I can dig up a store receipt... I'm falling out of love with Arrow for a number of reasons. Nothing special anymore imo.
I'd rather watch it on vhs
Missing out on
Can't wait for my copy. I don't have the blu so it makes sense to get the 4k
How do you get these so early???
Review copy from Arrow.
@@bened22 ok captain obvious... I meant how to get them
@@MidnightsEdgeAfterDark its obvious how to get them.
@@nick1635 then link me to where please
I think when your channel gets big enough they ask you if you would like review copies get sent to you.
no will not upgrade to blu or 4k in fact i wouldn't put that 4k into a dog cat charity recuse shelter
Hard pass for me stick with the bluray
Being this film was remastered in 4k you would've thought they put in modern cgi to it considering its a classic and at least you still have the option to see it in the original look as well as an option star trek did it with the original show and with the motion picture director cut 4k remaster. There many film like the last star fight could have been added with better cgi as a remaster and one of them i would like done is battle beyond the stars 4k Shame this film was done in a steel book
